Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study analyzes food security and coping mechanisms in semi-arid West Pokot between 1920–1995. Based on a wide array of primary and secondary sources, the study analyzes the historical role of indigenous irrigation, specifically furrow irrigation, rain-fed farming and livestock keeping, in food production and food security among the Pokot of northwest Kenya. Besides farming and herding, the study also analyzes trade, hunting and gathering, as well as lending and borrowing (for example of food) based on reciprocity, and their contribution to food security in the area. In the colonial and post-colonial West Pokot, income from wage labor and mining …

To Build, And Plant, And Keep A Table': Class, Gender, And The Ideology Of Improvement In Eighteenth-Century Women's Literature., Jeannie C. Dalporto
To Build, And Plant, And Keep A Table': Class, Gender, And The Ideology Of Improvement In Eighteenth-Century Women's Literature., Jeannie C. Dalporto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation, I argue that the discourse of improvement, which stressed profit and productivity on the land and in the household, helped to define—and was defined by—class and gender ideology in the eighteenth century. I read the works of laboring class women poets, Mary Collier and Mary Leapor, and the utopian novelist, Sarah Scott, within the framework of land improvement treatises and household books. In doing so, I demonstrate how ideologies of labor and gender are inherently bound up with socioeconomic concerns about land and estate management. In Chapter one, I examine how notions of thrift found in land …
The Presbyterian Church Of East Africa: An Account Of Its Gospel Missionary Society Origins, 1895-1946., Evanson Ndungu Wamagatta
The Presbyterian Church Of East Africa: An Account Of Its Gospel Missionary Society Origins, 1895-1946., Evanson Ndungu Wamagatta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation traces the Gospel Missionary Society origins of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). The church was established when the Gospel missionary Society (GMS) from the United States of America (USA) and the Church of Scotland Mission (CSM) from Scotland merged their work in 1946. Consequently, the focus of this study is the work of the GMS in Kenya from when it was inaugurated in 1895 to the time of the merger in 1946. As shown in this dissertation, the GMS initially had no intention of establishing its work and then hand it over to the CSM as …
Mechanisms Of Chromium(Vi)-Induced Carcinogenesis: The Involvement Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Signal Transduction Pathway., Suwei Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although Cr(VI)-containing compounds have been widely recognized as carcinogens for over 100 years, the mechanisms of their actions are not fully understood. The overall objective of this study is to investigate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis, focusing on tumor suppressor protein p53 and regulatory signal transduction pathways. In the present study, the role of ROS in p53 activation was investigated and the following conclusions were obtained: (a) Cr(VI) is able to activate p53 protein; (b) ROS, especially ·OH radical, are responsible for the p53 activation induced by Cr(VI). In addition, we presented a mechanism of …
The Role Of Accessory Proteins In Controlling The Thyroid Hormone Regulation Of Transcription Of The Malic Enzyme Gene., Yutong Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Triiodothyronine (T3) stimulates a 70-fold or greater increase in transcription of the malic enzyme gene in chick embryo hepatocytes. Previous work has shown that the effects of T3 on malic enzyme transcription are mediated in large part by sequence elements located within a liver-specific and T3-inducible DNase I hypersensitive region in the 5′-flanking DNA of the malic enzyme gene. Within this DNase I hypersensitive region is a cluster of nuclear T3 receptor (TR) binding sites that together constitute a T3 response unit (TAU). Flanking the T3RU are accessory elements that enhance T3 regulation conferred by the T3RU in chick embryo …

Hazardous Materials Database, Veena Vadiala
Hazardous Materials Database, Veena Vadiala
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Handling and disposal of a retired object can be a major component of its Life Cycle Cost. Often, during dismantling of a retired object many hazardous materials are released. Disposal of hazardous materials also need to comply with various federal regulations. Agencies like Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set these safety regulations. It is possible to apply generic exposure and release controls to protect workers from hazardous materials. For the most cost effective hazard controls it is necessary first to identify the materials and their properties of primary concern. There is a need …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this research is to explore techniques with which long-term physiologic time-series data can be analyzed, so that relevant changes in physiological signals, particularly the electrocardiogram signal, can be captured, processed, quantified and stored. A new experimental model was developed such that the electrocardiogram can be monitored continuously over thirteen weeks. Cardiotoxicity was progressively induced with doxorubicin in a rabbit model, and electrocardiographic progressions from normal state to diseased state were continuously tracked. Automated methods for analyzing the data were developed to manage and control the extensive electrocardiogram dataset. A significant challenge to this work is the sheer …
Effects Of Ownership And Circulation On Editorial Presentation In West Virginia Newspapers, Matthew E. Umstead
Effects Of Ownership And Circulation On Editorial Presentation In West Virginia Newspapers, Matthew E. Umstead
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis, which focuses on the post-yellow journalism era in West Virginia, further develops the body of research done on the influence of chain ownership in newspapers.;Historically, strong political biases in news coverage were found in the yellow journalism, early 20th century period. And this study finds a conservative bias on the opinion-editorial pages in a traditionally Democratic state with few competing media markets and reliance upon newspapers for local news. This thesis finds ownership status and circulation size affects the balance and variety of feature items presented within the opinion editorial content. Thus, previous research suggesting chain ownership influence …
Limits Of Sensitivity To Delayed Timeout From Avoidance, Chad Michael Galuska
Limits Of Sensitivity To Delayed Timeout From Avoidance, Chad Michael Galuska
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Session-reduction procedures have been employed to assess molar control of avoidance responding. By conceptualizing session reduction as a delayed timeout from avoidance, the present study investigated the limits of molar control while minimizing several methodological limitations inherent in such procedures. Six times during each session, a two-link chain schedule was superimposed on a baseline schedule of variable-cycle shock avoidance. Completion of the initial link (fixed-ratio 10 schedule) produced a timeout following a signaled delay during which the avoidance schedule remained operative. For most rats, the delay was manipulated across conditions from 0 s to 60 s. Control by the delayed …
Persistence Of Response Variation And Repetition, Adam Howard Doughty
Persistence Of Response Variation And Repetition, Adam Howard Doughty
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A multiple chained schedule was used to assess the persistence of fixed and variable response sequences. In one terminal link, a single 4-peck response sequence produced food (Repeat) and in the other terminal link a 4-peck response sequence produced food only if it had been occurring infrequently relative to the other 15 possible responses (Vary). Similar response and reinforcement rates occurred in each terminal link. Identical variable-interval 20-s schedules operated in the initial links preceding each terminal link and lower response rates reliably occurred in the initial link preceding the Vary terminal link. After responding stabilized under the multiple chained …
Commercialism, Subsistence, And Competency On The Western Virginia Frontier, 1765--1800, John M. Boback
Commercialism, Subsistence, And Competency On The Western Virginia Frontier, 1765--1800, John M. Boback
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the early nineteenth century, Americans have frequently associated the pioneers of the Appalachian Mountains with subsistence farming, economic independence, and a certain degree of hostility toward capitalism. This thesis disproves the myth of pioneer self-sufficiency by demonstrating how the men and women who settled in western Virginia during the final third of the eighteenth century used a variety of tactics in their struggle to achieve a competency. Although subsistence activities, such as hunting and farming, undoubtedly held an important place in the backcountry domestic economy, the settlers also interacted with the commercial market as both producers and consumers of …

Agency (degree of challenge; High versus Low) and Communion (degree of agreement; Agree versus Disagree) were manipulated. Heart rate (HR) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were assessed. Participants completed questionnaires assessing state and trait anger, and angry thoughts. Traditional women exhibited higher HR during speaking and listening intervals than other groups. Higher levels of state anger were reported for individuals …
Evaluation Of Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Bifidobacteria As Indicators Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, John Elmer Ravenscroft Jr.
Evaluation Of Survival And Recovery Characteristics Of Bifidobacteria As Indicators Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, John Elmer Ravenscroft Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The examination of aquatic environments for bacterial indicator organisms has proven to be a useful and well-established practice for the purpose of monitoring microbiological water quality. An ideal indicator of fecal pollution should be present in sufficient density to allow detection, present simultaneous with pathogen(s), incapable of aftergrowth in external aquatic environments, easy to enumerate, and exclusively of fecal origin. Unfortunately, none of the indicator organisms presently in use today meet all of these requirements. Bifidobacteria show promise as indicators of fecal pollution in water with the additional ability of potentially distinguishing between fecal pollution of human and animal origin. …
Encoding Of Periodic Skin Stimuli By Spinal Dorsal Horn Neurons, Jeffrey J. Lawson
Encoding Of Periodic Skin Stimuli By Spinal Dorsal Horn Neurons, Jeffrey J. Lawson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The encoding of vibrotactile pitch by neurons of the somatosensory system has been investigated at many levels of the neuraxis. These studies, however, have not extended to the spinal dorsal horn, which is known to process low threshold mechanoreceptive input. The studies presented here were designed to assess the possible role of the dorsal horn in the encoding of vibrotactile pitch. To accomplish this task, dorsal horn single unit extracellular recordings were obtained during periodic electrical and sinusoidal mechanical stimulation of their receptive fields. Techniques used in classifying vibrotactile pitch encoding were similar to those used in other somatosensory nuclei, …
Alexander Von Humboldt And Nineteenth-Century Ideas On The Origin Of American Indians, Michael Anthony Wadyko
Alexander Von Humboldt And Nineteenth-Century Ideas On The Origin Of American Indians, Michael Anthony Wadyko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation revolves around Alexander von Humboldt's research on Indian origins. Humboldt conducted investigations on Indians during his precedent-setting scientific expedition to Meso- and South America during the years 1799--1804. Officially sponsored by the Spanish crown, the main purposes for this expedition were twofold: to examine, evaluate, and discredit Buffon's "degeneracy" claims about America and its inhabitants, and to gather empirical evidence on geography, climate, flora, fauna, and the indigenous cultures. From these results Humboldt published three major works about the expedition, particularly a thirty-volume work condensed to two volumes, Vues de Cordilleres et monuments des peuples d' Amerique.;From this …

Characterization Of The Airway Epithelial Bioelectric Mechanisms Associated With The Effects Of Epithelium-Derived Relaxing Factor In Guinea Pig-Isolated Trachea, Richard Alan Johnston
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In response to elevated serosal or mucosal tonicity, guinea-pig tracheal epithelium releases the non-nitric oxide, non-prostanoid, epithelium-derived relaxing factor (EpDRF), which subsequently diffuses to the underlying airway smooth muscle to initiate relaxation. Hypertonicity-induced smooth muscle relaxation via EpDRF involves epithelial Na+ and Cl- channels and is preceded by a depolarization of the transepithelial potential difference (Vms). By utilizing two different experimental systems, this study sought to characterize further the airway epithelial bioelectric mechanisms associated with the effects of EpDRF in guinea-pig isolated trachea.;First, this study attempted to elucidate which epithelial ion channels and/or transporters are involved in the depolarization of …

Parallelization Of Ecg Template-Based Abnormality Detection, Sherry Lea Kratsas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In order to develop techniques to predict cardiac arrest, long-term study of electrocardiogram (ECG) data needs to be done to detect changes in electrical activity of diseased hearts. In the past, limitations of computing power and storage space restricted the duration of long-term studies to several days. However, with today's technological advancement, data collection can be extended to months or years. The goal of this thesis research is to evaluate several alternatives for distributing the analysis of ECG data over multiple processors. Parallel algorithms utilizing Correlation Waveform Analysis (CWA) were implemented to compare individual heartbeats and form heartbeat templates. The …

Evidence For A Systemic Embryotoxic Effect Of Early Luteal Regression In The Ewe, Beth Alyson Costine
Evidence For A Systemic Embryotoxic Effect Of Early Luteal Regression In The Ewe, Beth Alyson Costine
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Experiments were performed to determine if a short-lived corpus luteum was embryotoxic in ewes given supplemental progesterone and the route of transfer of embryotoxic products. Mated ewes were lutectomized or sham lutectomized on day 4 after estrus. Following surgery, ewes received saline or PGF 2alpha through days 6 or 7. Pregnancy rate was reduced after treatment with PGF2alpha (P < 0.001) compared to controls and was increased in PGF2alpha-treated ewes by lutectomy (P < 0.05). Mated ewes with bilateral ovulations were unilaterally lutectomized, and each uterine horn was ligated to eliminate intercornual flow on day 4 after estrus. Treatment with PGF2alpha on day 5 through 8 reduced pregnancy rates (P < 0.01), but embryonic survival did not differ in the uterine horns ipsilateral or contralateral to the regressing CL. The regressing CL is embryotoxic in progesterone-supplemented ewes, and embryotoxic luteal products have been shown to act by non-local pathways.

Effects Of Acetaminophen On Estrogen-Responsive Alkaline Phosphatase In Ishikawa Endometrial Cancer Cells, Janet A. Dowdy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the effect of acetaminophen (APAP) on the estrogen-responsive gene alkaline phosphatase in Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells. Basal levels of alkaline phosphatase activity were significantly inhibited in cells treated with 0.03, 0.1, 0.3 and 1mM APAP compared to control. Alkaline phosphatase activity induced with 1nM estradiol was significantly inhibited in a concentration dependent manner by 0.0.1, 0.3 and 1mM APAP. APAP did not directly inhibit the activity of alkaline phosphatase at any of the concentrations tested. Increasing estradiol concentrations (0.01, 0.1 and 1nM) did not alter the level of inhibition of alkaline phosphatase activity by 0.1, 0.3 or …
Induction Of Myosin Cross-Reactive Antibody And Cytolytic T Cell Responses In Mice With Streptococcus Pyogenes, Cynthia Ann Cunningham
Induction Of Myosin Cross-Reactive Antibody And Cytolytic T Cell Responses In Mice With Streptococcus Pyogenes, Cynthia Ann Cunningham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Impetigo and pharyngitis are two common suppurative infections in man elicited by Streptococcus pyogenes that lead to autoimmune complications in susceptible individuals. Although the underlying mechanisms for the onset of post-streptococcal autoimmunity have yet to be established, experimental information gained thus far suggests that the resultant pathology is a consequence of immunological cross-reactivity between streptococcal antigens, namely the anti-phagocytic factor M protein and host proteins, specifically myosin. Experimental animal model systems developed to date have predominantly relied on the immunization of adult animals with M protein emulsed in adjuvant. In the laboratory we have undertaken studies with mice to examine …
Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett
Carnivalized Narratives In The Postmodern Long Poem, Joe Wade Moffett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As a decidedly American tradition, the long poem has become the premier literary endeavor for poets in the twentieth-century. Writers such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams have pursued the long poem, but under the auspices of the "modern epic." Three postmodern long poems---Kenneth Koch's Seasons on Earth, Edward Dom's Gunslinger, and James Merrill's The Changing Light at Sandover---illustrate a dramatic rupture with the texts of modernism by introducing comic situations and multi-voiced narration---situations described by Mikhail Bakhtin as "dialogism" and "carnival," receptively---into the canon of American long poems. These innovations allow the postmodern long poem …
