A History Of The Samia Location In Western Kenya, 1890-1930., Jacob Raymond Seitz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This is a study of development and change on the local level in East Africa during the introduction and establishment of colonialism. Over the years the emphasis in African History has gradually shifted from the study of imperial policy and the Europeans' role to that of the African inhabitants. Until recently, this new focus has resulted principally in valuable studies of the precolonial life and migrations. Now it is the first decades of the twentieth century that are under scrutiny. This period, spanning the establishment of the colonial system, undoubtably had a great impact on independent Kenya.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem of this study is to develop a conceptual model of unified arts to serve as a base for interdisciplinary curriculum development by art, home economics, and industrial arts educators of the middle grades. A clear indication of the aims of the unified arts approach to curriculum design is a prerequisite to achieving significant improvements in mankind's aesthetic and technical qualities. This entails a description of what unified arts is and how it might be implemented in the middle grades setting.
Chemical Composition And Nutritional Benefits Of Acid Resistant Hemicellulose., James Edward Williams
Chemical Composition And Nutritional Benefits Of Acid Resistant Hemicellulose., James Edward Williams
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The present work was conducted to determine the influence of methods of preparation of corncob acid-resistant hemicellulose on its chemical composition and rat growth stimulation. ARH preparations involved either treatment with cation resin, solubilization of crude ARH and reprecipitation in ethanol, treatment of the hydrolysate with carbon or recovery of the non-dialyzable portion of corncob hydrolysate. All ARH preparations significantly improved growth and feed utilization of rats when fed at the 0.05% level of the diet. The reduction of the phenolic content of the ARH preparation did not influence rat growth. The carbohydrate components of the ARH preparation were similar …
The Occurrence Of Prototheca In Nature., Edward Allen Barnett
The Occurrence Of Prototheca In Nature., Edward Allen Barnett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Prototheca Isolation Medium (PIM) was proven to be effective in selectively isolating Prototheca, even from heavily contaminated natural sources. Measurements of the autospores of 125 isolates of Prototheca indicated that there might exist two sub-genera, one with small autospores and one with large autospores. The addition of one percent sodium acetate to PIM resulted in a medium that inhibited the growth of isolates of the small spored sub-genus while allowing isolates of the large spored sub-genus to grow normally. A survey of various environmental habitats showed that Prototheca was common in aquatic habitats such as streams and sewage. The largest …

Factors Influencing Black Bear Habitat Selection On Cheat Mountain, West Virginia, Thomas O. Miller
Factors Influencing Black Bear Habitat Selection On Cheat Mountain, West Virginia, Thomas O. Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The black bear (Ursus americanus Pallas) has occupied wild, inaccessible and sparsely inhabited areas throughout recent historic times. Their wariness, low population number s and secretive habits have made this species difficult to study, therefore, considerable speculation and misinformation has arisen regarding their activities. Until the advent of radio-telemetry and its r eady availability to researchers there was little chance to study individual free-roaming animals for any extended period of time.
The present study was initiated with the objective of describing black bear habitat in the Cheat Mountain area of West Virginia, and determining which factors influence usage of an …

Symmetry As A Determinant Of Musical Composition., Larry Joseph Solomon
Symmetry As A Determinant Of Musical Composition., Larry Joseph Solomon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this dissertation is to show how symmetry is a general determinant* of musical composition. Symmetry will be defined as a congruence which results from certain specific operations, namely those of reflection, rotation, or translation and will be applied to any aspect of musical composition. A composition is here to be the combination and arrangement of parts to form a whole. Stated in another v/ay, the purpose is to demonstrate how postoperative congruences define the arrangement and combination of the parts of musical works.
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Acute And Subacute Inhibition Of Cholinesterase On The Sensitivity Of Rat Tissues To Drugs, Dennis Joseph Foley
A Comparison Of The Effects Of Acute And Subacute Inhibition Of Cholinesterase On The Sensitivity Of Rat Tissues To Drugs, Dennis Joseph Foley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study was undertaken to further define the characteristics of subsensitivity produced by chronic administration of cholinesterase inhibitors and to attempt to elucidate a possible mechanism by which it occurs. Administration of disulfoton, echothiophate , parathion and OMPA to rats for eight days resulted in a decreased sensitivity of segments of ileum to carbachol and a marked inhibition of both true and total cholinesterase. The results indicate that a relationship between the degree of subsensitivity and the extent of cholinesterase inhibition may exist.
The Kootenay Plains (Alberta) Land Question And Canadian Indian Policy, 1799-1947., John William Larner
The Kootenay Plains (Alberta) Land Question And Canadian Indian Policy, 1799-1947., John William Larner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This paper contends that the Stoney (Assiniboine) people of southwestern Alberta, Canada, have a legitimate aboriginal claim to areas in the North Saskatchewan River headwaters known as Bighorn and Kootenay Plains, located between the first range of the Rocky Mountains and the Alberta-British Columbia boundary. The Stoneys appear to have followed two routes during their eighteenth-century westward migration from southeastern Manitoba. One group moved southwestwardly to central Montana, turning northward into the Alberta Rockies; while the other seems to have travelled along the prairie-parkland fringe, entering the mountains west of Edmonton, with one band taking possession of the upper North …

A Study Of The Use Of Concrete And Abstract Stimuli In The Development Ofperceptual Abilities Of Disadvantaged Five Year Old Children., Delbert Allen Lawhon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It was the purpose of this investigation to study the use of concrete and abstract stimuli in the development of perceptual abilities of disadvantaged five year old children. Hypotheses to be tested were (1) that subjects who were presented a curriculum of concrete stimuli initially and progressing to stimuli if abstraction would have greater perceptual development than those subjects who were presented a curriculum of abstract stimuli, and (2) that subjects receiving curricula of concrete and abstract stimuli would have greater perceptual development than subjects serving as the Control Group. Subjects (N=44) were enrolled in Head Start and received the …
Petrology And Stratigraphy Of The Greenbrier Limestone And Upper Pocono Sandstones, Wayne And Lincoln Counties, West Virginia., Bernard Robert Henniger
Petrology And Stratigraphy Of The Greenbrier Limestone And Upper Pocono Sandstones, Wayne And Lincoln Counties, West Virginia., Bernard Robert Henniger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A petrographic and stratigraphic study of the Middle Mississippian Greenbrier Group ("Big Lime") and associated units of southwestern West Virginia was undertaken by using 879 thin sections from 15 wells, 633 drillers' logs, and 66 mechanical logs. The "Big Lime" of southwestern West Virginia was deposited in a shallow- shelf, shoaling environment following slow transgression of the subtropical Greenbrier seas over a Pocono-Maccrady, deltaic-tidalflat complex. Regressive-transgressive fluctuations caused shoaling during lower to middle Union time, producing halo and crestal type oolite accumulations over Maccrady topographic highs. Biosparites were intimately associated with the shoal areas. Deepening of waters upon continued transgression …

The Levels Of Prostaglandins In The Uterus Of Nonpregnant, Pregnant And Progesterone-Treated Ewes., Laird Wilson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The review of literature established that in certain species the uterus has profound effects on ovarian function, Pharriss hypothesized that PGF could be the uterine iuteolytic factor, 2o^. the key to understanding the relationship between the uterus and the life span of the corpus luteum. It was the objective of the present study to determine in the uterus of the sheep if prostaglandins are present, the levels during the normal estrous cycle and the effects of various treatments, which were known to alter luteal lifespan, on levels of prostaglandins.
Anxiety Control As A Function Of Instructional Modifications In Paired-Associate Learning., Jean Beverly Peltonen
Anxiety Control As A Function Of Instructional Modifications In Paired-Associate Learning., Jean Beverly Peltonen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study is to test the anxietyinhibiting effects of two modifications in traditional instructions for paired-associate learning. It will be assumed that effective anxiety-inhibition will be evidenced by a significant decline in the number of trials required for subjects to arrive at a common learning criterion. Tha two instructional modifications to be tested ara specifically: (1) Requiring subjects to delay responding aloud for an established number of list presentations (as opposed to permitting immediate responses), and (2) Informing subjects that capable individuals frequently experience considerable frustration before mastering the task with which they will be presented.
