Effects Of Plant Flavonoids On The Fate Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Rhizosphere Soil, Xiujin Qui Aug 2000

Effects Of Plant Flavonoids On The Fate Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Rhizosphere Soil, Xiujin Qui

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

High-molecular-weight polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent in the environment although a wide variety of microorganisms can metabolize PAHs. In the past decades, laboratory and filed studies have shown that PAH degradation in soil is often limited by poor bioavailability and oxygen availability. Bound residue formation of PAHs with macromolecules of soil organic matter is an important fate mechanism. More recently, phytoremediation for PAH-contaminated soils is being explored. It is believed that PAH degradation may be enhanced in rhizosphere soil due to the improved aeration condition and the active soil microbial community sustained by root exudates. Whether certain root exudates …

The Relationships Between Snags And Cavity-Nesting Birds In A Gypsy Moth-Impacted Forest., Christopher Ryan Showalter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gypsy moth defoliation can result in the death of trees and create snags (standing dead trees), a resource vital to cavity-nesting species. With this in mind, population trends of 11 cavity-nesting birds and their relationship to snags were investigated from 1984 to 1999 in an area that was impacted by gypsy moth defoliation. Data from before a major gypsy moth outbreak (1984-1986), during (1987-1988), and after (1989-1999) enabled inferences about this forest bird community to be made. The combined abundance of the 11 cavity-nesting species examined increased significantly during the years immediately after the outbreak (1989 – 1993) followed by …

Endothelin-1 Gene Expression In The Porcine Ovary: Follicular Development., Hope Marie Sasway

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is known to inhibit steroidogenesis in granulosa and luteal cells. This study investigates ET-1 gene expression to localize the source of synthesis. Previous studies showed the presence of ET-1 in porcine ovarian granulosa cell cultures. The present study provides the first evidence that gene expression of ET-1 occurs in the porcine ovary exclusively within the granulosa cells of antral follicles. ET-1 immunoreactivity was observed in 65.7% of the large antral follicles, particularly in more differentiated granulosa cells. An autocrine role for ET-1 is suggested because ET-1 binding sites were previously detected here. ET-1 expression and atresia (one aspect …

Legibility: How Precedents Established In Print Impact On-Screen And Dynamic Typography, Heidi Specht

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The printed word has been commonplace in society for over 500 years; the written word has been in existence for thousands. The primary intent of the written or printed word has historically been to be read. With that goal, rules and formats have developed over the centuries as aids to legibility. Naturally, these guidelines have been developed for the printed, or static typographic page. As our sophistication with and acceptance of technology grows, however, we increasingly turn to the computer or television screen for written information. Additionally, graphic designers and artists are questioning the role of the printed word as …
