Failure Of Opioids To Modify Noradrenergic Neuronal Recovery From A Dorsal Bundle Lesion In Neonatal Rats, Ellen L. Kunkel-Bagden
Failure Of Opioids To Modify Noradrenergic Neuronal Recovery From A Dorsal Bundle Lesion In Neonatal Rats, Ellen L. Kunkel-Bagden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Morphine and exogenous opioid peptides alter the development of central noradrenergic neurons damaged by neonatal treatment with the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopa. Transection of the dorsal noradrenergic bundle (DNB) in neonatal rats produces nearly the same alteration in the developmental pattern. It was of interest to determine whether morphine or an exogenous opioid peptide (metenkephalin) was able to modify the recovery of noradrenergic neurons after neonatal surgical transection of the DNB. Neonatal rats were divided into two groups. Both groups received saline (0.85%) or naloxone (2.0 mg/kg) by the intraperitoneal (i.p.) route. In the first group the animals received an additional i.p. …
Spatial Perception As A Predictor Of Success In Higher Mathematics, Lou A. Rolen
Spatial Perception As A Predictor Of Success In Higher Mathematics, Lou A. Rolen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this study was to determine if spatial perception could be a predictor of success in higher mathematics. This study first showed correlations of the results of three spatial perception tests taken by high-school students with their final geometry grades. Structure of the Intellect-Learning Ability subtests CFS (cognition of figural systems) and CFT (cognition of figural transformations), as well as Differential Aptitude Tests-Space Relations subtest, were used. Correlations were then computed for high-school geometery grades with calculus I grades. Geometry thus was used as a bridge between spatial perception and calculus performance. Secondly, the investigator explored any difference …
Human Lung Tryptase Purification And Characterization, Timothy J. Smith
Human Lung Tryptase Purification And Characterization, Timothy J. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human lung tryptase (HLT), a mast cell derived trypsin-like enzyme, was isolated from whole human lung tissue obtained at autopsy. Increased yields from this purification process allowed extensive characterization of the enzyme. One of the critical steps in the purification scheme was the use of a linear heparin gradient to elute active material from cellulose phosphate. Gel filtration studies in 1.0 M NaCl yielded an apparent M(,r) of 135,000, and subsequent electrophoresis on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels demonstrated the presence of two active species with apparent M(,r) = 30,900 and 31,600. Enzymatic activity was sensitive to NaCl concentrations above 0.05 …

Research was conducted concerning persons, organizations, and movements to determine bases for character education. Teaching materials representing a variety of philosophies were also studied. The various bases of character education were grouped under four categories--religious, societal, specific traits, and individually determined. The history of each area was traced in a separate chapter. An attempt was made to include educators and materials representing various philosophies. The summary included some of the trends related to each base, major …
Sulfate Leaching From Sulphur Binding Agents In Experimental Asphalt Pavement, Angelina County, Texas, Peter Blanchette
Sulfate Leaching From Sulphur Binding Agents In Experimental Asphalt Pavement, Angelina County, Texas, Peter Blanchette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sulfate leaching from sulphur-binding agents used in asphalt pavement was significantly higher (p>.05) from four layers of a mixture of a single aggregate base material of hot sand, when compared to all other treatments. Analysis of the data showed that the other treatments had no overall effect on the soil sulfates. Four layers of a single aggregate of hot sand increased the quantity of sulfates in the soil by 107%. I recommend the use of sulphur-asphalt binder with the type "D" base material throughout construction or when two layers of the type "D" base material are placed on top …
Ultrastructure Of American Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Lepidota Pursh) Leaf Cells And An Associated Rust Pathogen (Uromyces Glycyrrhizae (Rab.) Magn.), Richard Wynia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
American licorice is a herbaceous, perennial, native legume common to disturbed areas, draws, woods, and depressions in prairies and pastures over much of temperate North America. It is utilized by livestock in the Great Plains and produces nutritious and highly digestible forage. However, forage value or use reports for this species have been inconsistent. Reports ranged from "relished by livestock" to "withstands excessive use" depending on location of utilization and author cited. Glycyrrhiza contains tannic acid and palatability of some forage legumes has been influenced by their tannic acid content. Severe natural infections of rust were noted in a licorice …
Effect Of Ethephon On Yield Components And Morphology Of Irrigated Spring Wheat, Brian C. Winberg
Effect Of Ethephon On Yield Components And Morphology Of Irrigated Spring Wheat, Brian C. Winberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The number of irrigated acres in South Dakota is approximately 0.5 million acres. Water development plans could increase irrigated acreage four to five times causing an additional demand for electricity. Utilities pay more for electricity used during peak demand and this cost is passed on to consumers. To evenly distribute demand, some utilities are experimenting with irrigation scheduling to avoid peak usage during the day and offering lower electrical rates to participants. Another method to distribute electrical demands could be growing a crop with lower water requirements or one which has requirements earlier in the growing season and matures before …

Inheritance Of Seed Yield, Its Components And Harvest Index In Flax (Linum Usitatissimum) Crosses, Nigatu Tadesse
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From a historical standpoint, flax or linseed is one of the oldest crops currently under cultivation. Flax is widely adapted to a range of climatic and edaphic conditions. Cultivation of flax in the U.S. started during the colonial period following the settlers westward migration to the Dakotas. In the U.S., flax is an important oilseed crop being used primarily as a drying oil for industrial coatings. At present, the major flax producing states are the Dakotas and Minnesota. The concentration of flax acreage in those states has been attributed to favorable climatic conditions. However, the average seed yield of flax …
Effects Of Various Dietary Salt Additions On Silica Urolithiasis In Male Rats, Carl J. Schreier
Effects Of Various Dietary Salt Additions On Silica Urolithiasis In Male Rats, Carl J. Schreier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Urinary calculi composed primarily of silica have been identified in range animals by several researchers. Silica calculi have also been found in dogs, humans, rats and guinea pigs. Forman et al conducted a detailed analysis of calculi. They found.that ashing at temperatures of 1500 C decreased calculi weight by 20%. Silica and calcium were shown to make up most of the remaining mineral content. Calculi from grazing ruminants in western Australia contained Si02, but further analysis showed that they were a mixture of substances. Mcintosh found that of the calculi analyzed 47% contained weddelite (Calcium oxalate.H20) and opaline silica, 13% …

Chandigarh: A Geographical Analysis, Sujata Sangwan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chandigarh is the only completely planned city in India. Brasilia (the new capital of Brazil) and Chandigarh are, in fact, the only major completely planned cities of the mid-20th Century. Brasilia has slums in the satellite villages, whereas Chandigarh does not have many apparent slums within the city as most of them have been cleared by resettlement made possible by a low-cost housing program. Chandigarh is an expensive city in which to live and build, but it is well planned. The city provides an excellent training ground for study by architects and planners throughout the world. The primary purpose of …
Radium-226 And -228 In The Groundwater Of Southeastern South Dakota, Terry Lee Randall
Radium-226 And -228 In The Groundwater Of Southeastern South Dakota, Terry Lee Randall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The intention of 'this thesis is to provide an overview of the research on the detection of naturally occurring radioactivity in the groundwater of southeastern South Dakota. The two constituents of the search were Ra-226 and Ra-228. These isotopes result from the natural decay of uranium and thorium present in underlying bedrock contained within the aquifers. The chief concern is that radium, being chemically similar to calcium, will replace the calcium present in bone tissue. These radium deposits are hazardous to one's health in that cells receiving. acute exposure may be damaged beyond the body's ability to repair them. The …
Ozonation And Manganese Greensand Filtration For Iron And Manganese Removal From A Municipal Groundwater Supply, Cary Pieterick
Ozonation And Manganese Greensand Filtration For Iron And Manganese Removal From A Municipal Groundwater Supply, Cary Pieterick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Stoebner and Schjodt both used a pilot plant which treated raw water with ozone gas for the oxidation of iron am manganese and then passed the treated water through an anthracite coal filter. Both agree that the degree of iron and manganese oxidation was greatly affected by changes in ozone dosage but was not greatly affected by changes in detention time. Both also experienced limited filter runs between backwashing because of iron and manganese breakthrough in the filter effluent. Kirscherman used a pilot plant that involved aeration, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) treatment, basin detention, and filtration through a dual media (manganese …
William Kloefkorn : His Works And His Women, Jane Jensen Pierce
William Kloefkorn : His Works And His Women, Jane Jensen Pierce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Kloefkorn's poetry explores the relationship between people and their land, an integral part of the psyche of a people whose livelihood depends upon this relationship. His first book of poetry, Alvin Turner As Farmer, deals almost entirely with learning to live with the land instead of trying to dominate it. After writing poetry on other subjects, Kloefkorn returns to this theme in Platte Valley Homestead, his eleventh collection, as he incorporates both the river and the land as learning experiences for the Midwestern farmer. In other collections, he goes beyond farm people and writes of small-town life, especially as it …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chlorsulfuron (2-chlor-N- (((4-methoxy-6-methyl-1, 3,5-tri azin-2-yl)amino)carbonyl)benzenesulfonamide] controls a wide variety of broadleaf weeds and some annual grasses in cereals and flax (Linum usittatissimum L.). It belongs to a class of compounds known as the sulfonylureas which also contains metsulfuron [methyl 2- ((methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine- (2-yl)amino) carbonyl)amino)sulfonyl)benzoate] and sulfometuron methyl [2-carbomethoxy-N- ((4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2-yl)amino carbonyl)benzenesulfonamide]. A characteristic of these compounds is high phytotoxic activity when applied at extremely low rates. In many cases, application of less than 0.01 kg active ingredient per hectare (kg ai/ha) of chlorsulfuron postemergence has provided control of 90% or better on a variety of weed species. Control of grassy weeds such …
The Effects Of Biological Type And Breed Composition On Production In Beef Cattle, Michael D. Monfore
The Effects Of Biological Type And Breed Composition On Production In Beef Cattle, Michael D. Monfore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Evaluation of breeds has developed beyond simple phenotypic performance comparisons to estimation of the various genetic components, additive and nonadditive, contributed by a breed (Dickerson ,1969). Alenda et al.; Dillard et al. and Robison et al. demonstrated methods for estimating breed genetic and maternal effects in crossbred populations. Alenda and Martin extended the use of regression models to allow estimation of optimal breed combinations. This procedure, based on work by Dickerson, involves construction of a mathematical model describing performance for a trait as the sum of breed additive, breed heterotic, breed maternal and maternal heterotic effects. Crossbreeding results have been …
Root Rating : Corn Yield Interactions, Kenneth G. Miller
Root Rating : Corn Yield Interactions, Kenneth G. Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica 1ongicornis barberi Smith and Lawrence (NCR) and the western corn rootworm D. vtrgifera virgtfera·LeConte (WCR) are the two species of rootworms of economic importance in South Dakota corn fields. NCRs infest both first year corn fields and continuous corn whereas WCRs generally infest continuous corn fields. Damage can occur from larval feeding on roots which inhibits nutrient and. moisture uptake, increases propensity for lodging or by adult feeding on silks which causes losses in pollination and seed set. Adult emergence begins in early July and continues until early September. Female rootworm adults mate and then …
Effects Of Erosion On The Productivity Of Two Ustolls, Christopher F. Miller
Effects Of Erosion On The Productivity Of Two Ustolls, Christopher F. Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil productivity is defined as the capacity of a soil to produce a specified plant or sequence of plants under a particular management system. Soil erosion is a threat to our agricultural productivity. Soil loss seldom improves the capacity of the affected soil to produce crops and often reduces the long-term crop production potential of that soil. It is estimated that 181 million acres of our nation’s 413 million acres of cropland are susceptible to erosion exceeding tolerable soil loss levels (T-values). This amount will continue to increase as more marginal land is put into production. However, the degree to …

Freezing Resistance In Corn (Zea Mays L.), Richard Lee Luhman
Freezing Resistance In Corn (Zea Mays L.), Richard Lee Luhman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Corn (Zea Mays L.), an annual crop, can be severely damaged by late spring frosts. Damage would be especially critical if the growing point were killed. To decrease the possibility that corn may be subjected to freezing conditions, shorter season corn could be planted later in the year. Another possibility, however, would be to develop varieties which could withstand freezing conditions. Due to the problem of spring frosts, the following research was performed with the long range goal of releasing a freeze resistant corn line. The initial stages of the research were to develop a method for screening corn inbred …
The Effect Of Photoperiod, Ergocryptine Injection And Melatonin Feeding On Reproduction In The Ewe, Cindie Marie Luhman
The Effect Of Photoperiod, Ergocryptine Injection And Melatonin Feeding On Reproduction In The Ewe, Cindie Marie Luhman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the most intriguing aspects of reproduction is the reversible fertility governing seasonal breeding. Sheep are one of the many species that exhibit a circannual rhythm in reproduction, because they start estrous cycles in fall and winter months and become anestrus in spring and summer months. Seasonal changes appear to control this. Ewes seem to be more completely seasonal than are rams because only very limited ovarian activity, fewer follicles, and no ovulation occurs in ewes, although follicular size remains unchanged. Most rams will produce viable semen throughout all seasons, however, Lincoln and Short and Almeida and Lincoln reported …

Modification Of The Ackers And White Transport Equation To Permit Calculation By Size Fractions, Jeff A. Lewandowski
Modification Of The Ackers And White Transport Equation To Permit Calculation By Size Fractions, Jeff A. Lewandowski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sediment transport is a phenomenon which must -be taken into account when an engineering project includes or influences a natural channel. Most notable of these projects are reservoirs, river training structures and bridge piers. The useful life of a reservoir is directly the amount of sediment transported in a river. River training structures affect the acceleration of the flow and cause scour or deposition dependent on design. Bridge piers which are not properly designed can also cause the same accelerations causing deposition or, in a worst case, scour, threatening the pier and bridge. The design of earthen channels must take …

Interest in small scale fuel ethanol production from agricultural crops and residues was intense in the late 1970’s but has diminished in recent years. The current demand for fuel ethanol is being met primarily by large scale producers. The Nebraska Alcohol Program began, in 1978, to promote a 10 percent ethanol 90 percent gasoline blend called "gasohol", in an effort to conserve petroleum fuels and to provide an alternative market for agricultural commodities. The high cost of producing ethanol in small scale plants and the limitations of ethanol as a fuel in conventional engines have limited the expansion of ethanol …
