A Loran-C Antenna Coupling Unit., Timothy Andrew Reilly 1963-
A Loran-C Antenna Coupling Unit., Timothy Andrew Reilly 1963-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project is the design of an antenna-coupling unit (ACU) that will operate with the Texas Instruments LORAN-C receiver and a 28-inch antenna. The height of the antenna used at the present is eight feet. Since the application of LORAN-C positioning is being expanded to vehicular location, an eight-foot antenna is not practical. The shorter antenna is necessary to prohibit striking trees, overpasses, etc. The newly designed ACU has more voltage gain to compensate for the attenuation of the incoming signal due to the shortening of the antenna. It also has a bandpass of 90 KHz-110 KHz with the center …
Characteristics And Use Of Wild Turkey Roost Sites In Southcentral South Dakota, Randall Allen Craft
Characteristics And Use Of Wild Turkey Roost Sites In Southcentral South Dakota, Randall Allen Craft
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ten radio-tagged wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo)were monitored to document roost site use and bird movements in the Missouri River breaks complex of southcentral South Dakota during the summer of 1984. Distances between roost sites used by wild turkeys ranged from 0.55 km to 3.09 km. Primary and secondary roost sites were identified. Turkeys used one primary roost site consistently every night during periods ranging from a few days to 2 months, then moved to other primary roost sites. Secondary roost sites were used inconsistently by only a few birds that occupied the roost one night, and did not return on …

The production and use of synthetic chemicals for pesticide control increased dramatically after World War II. They were found to be highly effective, cheap to produce and easy to apply. Development of these chemicals has been one of the major developments for agriculture. In the 1970's public health risks and environmental damage caused by agricultural chemicals was recognized. Problems of chronic exposure, improper waste disposal and environmental damage developed which led to the federal government regulating their use and manufacture. Pesticide manufacturers have a variety of physical and chemical disposal methods for pesticide wastes. Disposal or detoxification methods for pesticides …

Parallel Plate Viscous Dampers, Mohammd Mawid
Parallel Plate Viscous Dampers, Mohammd Mawid
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The subject of this investigation is to analyze the oscillation of multi-plates immersed in a viscous fluid and the damping forces. The concept of multi-plates oscillating in a viscous fluid with the view of using the plates as a damper is believed to represent a new application. Conventional dampers consist of a cylinder filled with a fluid, usually oil, containing a piston which is free to move under the action of an external force. The velocity of the piston is regulated by the viscous resistance of the fluid flowing through the annular space between the piston and the cylinder walls, …

Quantitation And Identification Of Free Sugars From Vascular Plants By Gas-Liquid Chromatography With Mass Spectrometry, Darnell A. Nehlich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this thesis are both the further development of a method for the analysis of free sugars in plant tissues, and also the application of this method to tissues from vascular plants. The applied methodology is often referred to as the PAAN and/or PAKO procedure, an acronym for peracetylated aldononitrile and /or peracetylated ketooxime derivatives. The two-step derivatization procedure (oxime formation followed by peracetylation) will also convert polyols and non-reducing sugars to their corresponding peracetylated compounds. During the past decade there has been extensive application of this procedure, and also development of various aspects of the approach. A …

Enlightenment, Education And Entertainment : A Study Of The Chautauqua Movement In Kentucky., Judith J. Phillips 1944-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Chautauqua movement has been called "culture under canvas" and "the university of the people." What began as a training camp for Sunday School teachers on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in western New York State in the 1870's, grew and spread over the midwest for the next fifty years. There were some other permanent Chautauqua establishments, but none seemed to last as long as the original. What did last were traveling tent shows called Chautauquas that brought enlightenment, education, and entertainment to thousands of people over the summer months until the movement died because of technological advancements such as …
A Desegregation Study Of Public Schools In North Carolina, Ransome E. Holcombe
A Desegregation Study Of Public Schools In North Carolina, Ransome E. Holcombe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the desegregation of public schools in a selected southern state between the years 1954 and 1974. In developing the research project that described the elimination of legal biracialism in North Carolina's schools, public sentiment emerged as a major factor. North Carolina's public schools were unusual when compared to other states with dual systems because, despite the fact that the state had one of the largest black populations in the nation, the desegregation drama proceeded peacefully and successfully, albeit slowly. Throughout the twenty-year period that was required to completely eliminate the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mutagenesis of the defective transducing bacteriophage lambda fus2 was used to isolate a collection of temperature-sensitive mutants of E. coli in the major ribosomal protein gene cluster. Four mutants were examined in detail. Two of the mutants were resistant to the ribosomal antibiotics neamine and spectinomycin. Another mutant was defective in 50S ribosomal subunit assembly at 42(DEGREES)C. The 30S subunit proteins S17 and S19 were changed in two different mutants. Each protein migrated as a more basic species in two-dimensional gels of ribosomal proteins. Ribosomes from each of the four mutants examined showed a temperature-dependent reduction in translational activity in …
