The Influence Of Spenser's Irish Residence On The Faerie Queene., Ellen Mcdowell Davis Jan 1932

The Influence Of Spenser's Irish Residence On The Faerie Queene., Ellen Mcdowell Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The departure of Spenser for Ireland in 1580 as secretary to Lord Grey of Wilton, newly appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland, marks a significant point in the poet's career. Save for occasional trips to England, the remaining years of his life Spenser spent in this "salvage land", among a hostile and turbulent people, far from the brilliance of English court life and "Elisa's blessed fields." The appointment to service in Ireland seems to have been a disappointment to the poet who had shortly before thought himself assured of an official career in England under the patronage of Leicester. In October …

The Catholic Spirit In Modern Poetry, Anna Marie Lacaze

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1932, traces the revival of Catholic spirit in modern English poetry following its suppression after the Protestant Reformation. Lacaze argues that this revival began with the Oxford Movement of the nineteenth century and its leader, John Henry Newman, whose conversion to Catholicism and subsequent writing exercised a lasting influence on English literary and religious culture.

The thesis opens with an account of Newman's life, his role in the Oxford Movement, his 1845 conversion, and his major prose works, including "Apologia …

The Household Budget, Inez Pepin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics in 1931, examines the household budget as a system for managing family income during a period of national economic crisis. Pepin opens by surveying contemporary economic theories offered to explain the ongoing depression, including overproduction, unequal distribution, and capitalization theories, before turning to the household as a unit affected by broader economic conditions.

The thesis defines the budget as one stage within a larger financial organization process encompassing planning, record-keeping, and periodic review, and argues that no fixed formula for …

The thesis then examines the Method of Exhaustion developed by Greek mathematicians including Antiphon (430 B.C.), Eudoxus (370 B.C.), and Archimedes (225 B.C.), whose summation of infinite series represents the nearest ancient approach to …

A Congregation of Colored Sisters in New Orleans! To those unfamiliar with the history of the Crescent City, this seems not only an impossibility. Was not New Orleans the slave mart of the South? Is not the color or race prejudice a traditional still adhered to? Is this Congregation in its infancy? If so, when was it founded and by whom? These, and many other questions of the same type are asked by tourists when they are informed that the building on Orleans Street, formerly the Orleans b ballroom, is the Convent of the Holy Family and the motherhouse of …
