Aeration Of Stockade Lake, South Dakota, Larry C. Vanray Jan 1969

Aeration Of Stockade Lake, South Dakota, Larry C. Vanray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intermittent aeration of Stockade Lake (2,470 acre feet) during the summers of 1967 and 1968 temporarily altered the thermal profile and phytoplankton density. Continual aeration for 48 hours in the deepest portion of this eutrophic lake produced epilmnetic cooling, hypolimnetic warming and apparent reduction of algal populations at three sampling stations in various parts of the lake. Dye, released at the aeration site, was found at all depths throughout the lake after 461/2 hours aeration. Air bubbles, rising from diffuser blocks near the lake bottom, carried cold, hypolimnetic water to the surface at a rate of 4.7 million gallons per …

Vacuum Dewatering Of Elutriated Wastewater Sludge Conditioned With Lime Sludge, Donald Lee Miller Feb 1968

Vacuum Dewatering Of Elutriated Wastewater Sludge Conditioned With Lime Sludge, Donald Lee Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary concerns a community must consider upon adoption of a sludge disposal program is that of operating costs. The operating costs of a vacuum filtration process are relatively high due to the large amounts of chemical coagulants which are generally required to condition the sludge so that it will exhibit its best dewatering characteristics. This project was undertaken to assess the value of lime softening sludge as a conditioning agent for digested sewage sludge preceding vacuum filtration. The sludges studied were obtained from the Sioux Falls Water Treatment Plant and the Sioux Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant. Sioux …

Some Thermal Plate Deflections Determined By The Complex Variable Method, James N. Maytum Feb 1968

Some Thermal Plate Deflections Determined By The Complex Variable Method, James N. Maytum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The first application of complex variables to elasticity dates with the beginning of this century. In 1902, L. N. G. Filon published a paper in which he developed the rudiments of the problem of plane theory of elasticity in complex variables. In 1909 G. V. Kolosov derived the equations of plane theory of elasticity in complex form and effected solutions to some boundary value problems. The major work relating complex variables and the theory of elasticity was given by N. R. Muskhelishvili whose published works began in 1919. Muskhelishvili’s [11] outstanding contribution is his brilliant monograph "Some Basic Problems in …

A Study Of The Adaptability Of Till Planting Corn Under Dryland Conditions In Eastern South Dakota, Luther A. Mathison Feb 1968

A Study Of The Adaptability Of Till Planting Corn Under Dryland Conditions In Eastern South Dakota, Luther A. Mathison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The technological changes taking place in farming practices today are occurring as a much faster rate than a decade or two ago. In many ways, farmers are applying techniques and practices used in industrial business to their own operations. The average farm size has continually increased and today many farms are enough like a large business that the industrial practices apply directly. The shortage of qualified labor has plagued farmers for some time, and many of the new machines and practices attempt to replace labor with capital as a direct result of these shortages.

Effects Of Marginal Quality Irrigation Water On The Accumulation Of Salts And Alkali In Irrigated Soils, John M. Madden Feb 1968

Effects Of Marginal Quality Irrigation Water On The Accumulation Of Salts And Alkali In Irrigated Soils, John M. Madden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study has been undertaken because of the limited knowledge of the effects of irrigation on soils in semi-arid and sub-humid climatic areas. The objectives of this research are: 1.To study irrigation systems now in operation and to determine by soil and water analysis the rates of salt and alkali accumulation; 2. To determine, by a multiple regression analysis, the laboratory determinations which most accurately estimate the exchangeable-sodium-percentage of the soil; 3. To determine the effect of various qualities of irrigation water on the accumulation of salts and alkali in the soils being developed for irrigation in South Dakota; 4. …

Evaluation Of An Aerated Lagoon System Treating Domestic And Industrial Wastewaters, John Thomas Lowthian Feb 1968

Evaluation Of An Aerated Lagoon System Treating Domestic And Industrial Wastewaters, John Thomas Lowthian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As industrial management becomes increasingly aware of' the advantages of processing agricultural products near the source of supply, the rate of industrial growth in rural areas correspondingly seems to accelerate. Many rural communities have already experienced the impact of industrial expansion. The type of industry which processes agricultural products produces large quantities of polluted water and, thereby, imposes a significant load upon the wastewater treatment facilities. This increased loading alters, to some extent, the ecology within the treatment processes employed. The wastewater treatment facilities used by a high percentage of rural communities consist of stabilization ponds. Some unique problems are …

Overhead Contribution From A Sloping Roof, Duane David Yager Feb 1968

Overhead Contribution From A Sloping Roof, Duane David Yager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The probable spread of nuclear arms capability and the continued build-up of nuclear weaponry in the arsenals of several nations are extremely critical. The possibility of a nuclear disaster, whether by accident, miscalculation, or design, has been greatly increased. Such a disaster could result in the annihilation or incapacitation of large numbers of the population. This is especially true for those people that are unprotected against the several effects -of nuclear weapons. During the period following World War II, the United States developed its strategic offensive forces to a point where they are now equal, if not superior, in quantity …

Drain Modulation Of The Field-Effect Transistor Amplifier, John C. Lietz Feb 1968

Drain Modulation Of The Field-Effect Transistor Amplifier, John C. Lietz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rapid transmission of inforn1ation from one point to another is extremely vital to our modern society. Millions of messages are transmitted each day through a variety of communication systems. A large majority of these systems rely upon some type of modulation process. The word "modulate" did not originate in the communications field. Like many other terms it was adopted because it aptly described the process to which it is now commonly associated. Basically the term means: to adjust; to regulate; to change; to alter; to vary; or to inflect as with the voice. For example, speaking and singing are both …

Comparison Of Electric Strength Of Nitrogen And C4f8 Various Wave Shapes, John David Vinatieri Feb 1968

Comparison Of Electric Strength Of Nitrogen And C4f8 Various Wave Shapes, John David Vinatieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

All the electrical equipment involved in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical energy is exposed to switching surges and the effects of lightning voltages to some degree. Even the most modern protective devices, such as lightning arrestors, require a finite time to operate. Thus the insulation in generators, transformers, and switchgear must withstand high impulse voltages for the very short time required for protective devices to conduct the lightning voltages and switching surges to ground. The use of gases as insulation in electrical equipment offers certain advantages over the more conventional liquids and solids. In recent years attempts to …

Mathematical Model Of A Spherical Shell Heat Exchanger With Exponential Internal Heat Generation, John Lin Tsou Feb 1968

Mathematical Model Of A Spherical Shell Heat Exchanger With Exponential Internal Heat Generation, John Lin Tsou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been recognized that many convection heat transfer problems involve internal heat generation. Nuclear fuel elements, chemically reactive liquids and transparent shell solar energy collectors are a few examples. Theoretically, this type of problem has not been studied extensively. Lumsdaine solved the internal heat generation problem with constant temperature boundary conditions in spherical coordinates. The purpose of this thesis is to follow Lumsdaine's analysis to study those problems where internal heat generation is a function of radius. The governing partial differential equation in spherical coordinates is of the second order, non-homogeneous and has variable coefficients. The non-homogeneity arises from …

Flow Over A Rough Porous Flat Plate With Surface Mass Transfer, Francis K. King Feb 1968

Flow Over A Rough Porous Flat Plate With Surface Mass Transfer, Francis K. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A wind tunnel was designed by the author for studying the aerodynamic properties of porous plates; it was constructed and installed in the Heat Power Laboratory, Mechanical Engineering, South Dakota State University. With a total pressure tube, the velocity profile throughout the boundary layer and the average shear stress at the wall were determined. A Preston tube was used to measure-local shear stress. There are only limited experimental data available on the relation between roughness and shear stress for flow over porous surfaces with injection or suction. Because of instrumentation problems, it proved difficult to obtain data in the sublayer. …
