How to control the traffic on the streets of our cities is becoming one of the most important problems of the present day. an urban community depends for its existence upon the transportation facilities both internal and external. The external transportation is necessary for a city's growth because food supplies and raw materials must be brought into the city and the commodities which are produced in the cities must be distributed to other places.

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning Jan 1926

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reconstruction began in Kentucky somewhat sooner than in the States south of the Blue Grass Commonwealth. As soon as the invading Confederate army withdrew from the State in 1862, loyal Kentuckians began to prepare for peaceful pursuits and to restore the State, as best they could, to somewhat the position it occupied before the war between the states. Of course it was impossible to remake the State as it was before the struggle, but at least the civil authority could be restored, and the State prepared for the reign of peace. The dates 1862 to 1870 have been selected as …

The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan Jan 1926

The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much work has been done in the past on the nutritional value in young life of different dairy products, all of which experiments have been carried to successful completion by various men at different times. There is, however, no published information demonstrating the comparative values resulting from experimental work in the nutritional value of ice cream as a supplementary diet in infant life. For the purpose of the following experiments, the albino rat, (Mus Norvegicus Albinus) and the Norway rat, (Mus Nor vegicus), together with Guinea Pigs and cats were used. It is a well-known fact that rats exhibit the …

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979 May 1925

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the early days of 1861, Kentucky, torn between her allegiance to the federal government and her sympathy for the South, with her citizenry so divided that hardly a family in the state stood united, vainly endeavored to carve out for herself a niche of security in the midst of the chaos of war. Continuing her position as one of the United States, she yet attempted to assume a position of neutrality towards the two belligerents--the United States of which she was a part and the Confederacy.

Philippine Education Prior To Magellan., Morris Uberta Lively Jan 1925

Philippine Education Prior To Magellan., Morris Uberta Lively

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In studying the culture of any people we learn that no group has been absolutely independent of influences from other people. No man indeed can say that he has attained anything of value absolutely by himself; an individual must give credit to the contributions of other men, nations and races of people past and present. So must a nation glean its culture from that of other people. The Roman Empire is a splendid example of this gleaning of culture. Their culture came from contributions made by the Greeks, the Jews and from the people of northern Africa as well as …

The Railroads Of Kentucky 1861-1865., Jessie Munday

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In studying and teaching history, I have been convinced that the transportation facilities of a country have helped or hindered its political, industrial and commercial development. In this thesis, I have endeavored to show the value of the railroads of Kentucky during the political conflict known as the Civil War. I have consulted a number of historical records and have tried to select from them, the most convincing proofs. Articles consulted are listed in the bibliography at the close. This thesis was prepared in connection with a seminar course at the University of Louisville, on “Kentucky during the Civil War.” …

This paper is devoted to a study of resonance in magnetically coupled, tuned circuits, the primary having impressed on it a sinusoidal e.m.f. and containing capacity, inductance and resistance, the secondary circuit being the same as the primary except that the e.m.f. is induced by the primary. Two such circuits are represented in figure 1. The ordinary radio receiving or broadcasting se consists fundamentally of two such circuits. In the receiving set the e.m.f. in the primary is received from the waves in the ether, the ariel and ground being similar to the generator connections as show in the figure. …

Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson Jan 1925

Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last decade the annual loss due to corn rot diseases has been so great that much attention has been given this problem. These diseases, according to several authorities are caused by certain fungi and bacteria which live parasitically upon the corn plant and are known as root, stalk and ear rots. Several species are found on the seed and start growth as soon as the seed germinates. These same species are found living in the soil. When these organisms are found to be prevalent on the seed and in the soil all stages of growth in the corn …

This thesis gives the results of a study of the influence of the size and design of nails on their efficiency with respect to driving and pulling from various species of wood. The study was made at the Forest Products Laboratory of the United States Forest Services in cooperation with the American Steel and Wire Company, primarily to compare two types of nails, a common nail with plain head and regular point, and a special nail with a larger checkered head and a longer “diamond” point. The results indicate in a general way that the blunter point is the more …

A Comparative Study Of Methods Of Proportioning Concrete, Lawrence C. Maugh Jan 1923

A Comparative Study Of Methods Of Proportioning Concrete, Lawrence C. Maugh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A continual increase in the use of concrete as a building material has greatly increased the demand for more definite knowledge of the factors that are conductive to strength and economy of construction. It has been found necessary to acquire this knowledge largely through definite and extensive experimental work under conditions that can be carefully controlled and regulated. Although a considerable amount of experimental work upon the properties and proportioning of concrete has been performed in the last decade, the conflicting statements that have been made clearly indicate that this field of research and investigation is by no means complete. …

A History Of Ohio River Trade At Louisville From Its Beginning Until 1840., John Edward Heller May 1922

A History Of Ohio River Trade At Louisville From Its Beginning Until 1840., John Edward Heller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dominant theme in the study of any phase of Ohio River history is found in the great extent of the river system and the vast area of the drainage basin of the Mississippi to which this stream forms so important a part. The basin of the Mississippi, as has been aptly said, is the "Body of the Nation," all other parts of the nation being but members, important in themselves, yet more important in their relation to this.(1) In extent it is the second great valley of the world, being exceeded only by that of the Amazon.(2) In a …

George Meredith's Ideas Of Religion., Mary Ellis Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Every man is to a greater or less degree a product of the influences surrounding his life. The more commonplace minds of the race, no doubt, are chiefly affected; and occasionally we find a man or woman of so keen an intellect, so striking an individuality, that it is difficult to trace the influence of his age upon him. Rather he becomes a power in forming the opinions of the next generation, stands in advance of his own period. Of this individualistic type if George Meredith, one of the greatest of the nineteenth century writers, if not foremost among them.

The School Garden From An Educational View Point., Emilie Yunker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"School gardens are not intended to create gardeners or farmers but to afford the growing boy or girl an opportunity for many aided developments." In the school garden the children are taught by one who can inspire them with a love not only for plants, but for everything else that has life and grows to take care of trees, lawns, flowers, vegetables and such things planted with their own hands. Hygienic Analysis Of Some Of The Potable Waters Of Brookings, Lloyd E. Work Jan 1897

Hygienic Analysis Of Some Of The Potable Waters Of Brookings, Lloyd E. Work

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: While it is universally recognized that there is a difference between good and bad drinking water, few realize how important a part water plays in producing or destroying health. Comparatively recent investigation has shown that water forms the most active agent in the production as well as the promotion and spread of disease. Water containing organic impurities will, when used, because various forms of disease, while if the water of a well which has received the excreta of a patient suffering from some infectious disease, be drunk, the drinker is almost sure to contract the disease. The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown Jan 1896

The Trend Towards Socialism In Recent Law-Making, James Arthur Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: It is an undeniable fact that civilized nations are drifting towards socialism. Whether we reach the goal of ideal and theoretic socialists at last, or stop short of socialism in its modern accepted meaning it is not the purpose of this work to investigate. Socialism is of recent origin. It was started less than seventy years ago in France. The progress that it has made is worthy of some attention. It has spread to all civilized nations and has won many earnest supporters in England, France Germany and the United States. A great deal of confusion results from the …

Specifications For A System Of Irrigation For College Grounds, Harry M. Cornell Jan 1895

Specifications For A System Of Irrigation For College Grounds, Harry M. Cornell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rainfall of this portion of country not being sufficient, or if sufficient not uniformly distributed, it has become necessary to successful work in agriculture that provision be made for a system of irrigation which will tide agriculturists over a dry season or be a means of supply when most needed. Deeming it therefore a prime requisite to successful experimenting along agricultural lines, I thought of planning a system of irrigation which could be profitably and advantageously applied to the grounds of the South Dakota Agricultural College. My plan is simply to give drawings, data, cost and location of a …
