Wedge Flows Of Power-Law Fluids, Joseph H. Cothern Jan 1969

Wedge Flows Of Power-Law Fluids, Joseph H. Cothern

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many solutions exist for the laminar boundary-layer flow of Newtonian fluids. This is verified in literature by Schlichting. However, some fluids do not obey the Newtonian postulate that the stress tensor is directly proportional to the rate of deformation tensor. It is as likely, in fact, that non-Newtonian fluids could be pumped into an industrial complex as the more common Newtonian fluids. This is partly due to the growing use of synthetics and petroleum products in modern day living. The use of non-Newtonian fluids, however, does not have to be limited to problems of internal flow. The fluid in the …

Ground Water Treatment At A Refuse Landfill With An Intercepting Trench, David Charles Nelson Jan 1969

Ground Water Treatment At A Refuse Landfill With An Intercepting Trench, David Charles Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of the research presented herein were to continue the previous studies and to evaluate the treatment effects of the intercepting trench. This investigation afforded sufficient time after the construction of the trench for the entire landfill area to reflect the influence of the trench. In conducting this investigation, the direction of the ground water flow was defined and various chemical analyses of the ground water were made to attain these objectives.

Polynomial Approximation Of A Magnetization Curve, Viswanath Narayan Jan 1969

Polynomial Approximation Of A Magnetization Curve, Viswanath Narayan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Developments in the production, distribution and control of electrical energy depend very largely on the correct knowledge and understanding of the laws representing the relation of electric current to magnetism. Modern developments in electrical engineering, particularly in the areas of electronic systems, communication equipment like telephones, electrical machinery, and magnetic amplifiers, make it imperative that the study of the behavior of materials under varying magnetic induction be accomplished thoroughly. A detailed study enables one to predict the performance of circuits under extreme test conditions. Although some recently discovered alloys have permeabilities greater than iron, their uses in magnetic circuits are …

Organic Degradation Of The Ground Water In The Proximity Of A Refuse Disposal Site, Wayne Evan Mohler Jan 1969

Organic Degradation Of The Ground Water In The Proximity Of A Refuse Disposal Site, Wayne Evan Mohler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ground water degradation resulting from refuse deposition in or near the ground water table has in recent years, become increasingly important. Although about 95 percent of the total fresh water reserves are underground sources, they presently provide only approximately 17 percent of the total amount of water used for all purposes in the country (1). There is much interest in developing ground water sources to a greater extent to supply our ever increasing demands. Not enough information is presently available to delineate accurately the effect that refuse disposal in or near the ground water has upon the quality of the …

Structural Behavior Of High Strength Bolted Connections With Slotted Holes, Dennis Brian Micko Jan 1969

Structural Behavior Of High Strength Bolted Connections With Slotted Holes, Dennis Brian Micko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this research was to determine the effect of slotted holes on the slip coefficient of high-strength bolted connections. Butt joints were used for the control specimens as well as for the test-specimens. The enclosed ply of the joint served as the pulling element and had standard round holes with a hole diameter 1/16-inch greater than the bolt diameter. The outer plies contained the slotted holes either parallel or perpendicular to the load. The slotted holes varied in length, using 0-lnch, 1/2-lnch, 3/4-lnch and 1-lnch as the tangent distance for the slots. The specimens with a tangent …

Computer Simulation Of A New Redundancy Reduction Technique, Uldis Birznieks Jan 1969

Computer Simulation Of A New Redundancy Reduction Technique, Uldis Birznieks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The compression of information into smaller and smaller bandwidths has been a constant struggle against an expanding demand. Since the modulation of a carrier necessarily produces sidebands, signals cannot be sent in zero bandwidth. For some time, attempts were made to beat nature, until the natural limits of noise and bandwidth were established. Men like Hartley, Nyquist, and Shannon set a sound scientific base and as a result, rules and limits have been Developed. But this struggle continues with ever more sophisticated demands. As requirements for larger amounts of scientific data arise, methods for utilizing the available means of data …

A Study Of The Origins And Development Of Kelo-Land Television, William Craig Mcnamara Jan 1969

A Study Of The Origins And Development Of Kelo-Land Television, William Craig Mcnamara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years television has become a topic for intensive study at American universities. This is shown by the multiplicity of studies reported in the annual research lists in Speech Monographs. Consistent with this research emphasis in television, several reasons influenced the undertaking of this current study. One reason was a personal interest in the field of television. The writer has been involved in broadcasting since he was in high school, and plans to make his career in television. Another reason for the selection of this topic was that this type of study had never been attempted in South Dakota. …

A Statistical Method Of Screening Electrocardiograms, Roger G. Bailey Jan 1969

A Statistical Method Of Screening Electrocardiograms, Roger G. Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the advent of the electrocardiogram, usually abbreviated ECG, the extent of its use in the medical field has broadened through research to find extensive applications in the diagnosis of heart ailments. One such application of the electrocardiogram is the diagnosis of the heart's operating condition and classification of its condition into normal and possibly abnormal categories. A new approach to the use of the electrocardiogram to categorize the condition of the heart is described in this thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to present the new method of screening electrocardiograms into normal versus possibly abnormal categories detecting at …

Selected Social And Personal Factors Associated With The Educational And Occupational Aspirations Of Rural South Dakota Youth, Jean D. Pederson Jan 1969

Selected Social And Personal Factors Associated With The Educational And Occupational Aspirations Of Rural South Dakota Youth, Jean D. Pederson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recognizing the urgent need of higher educational and occupational attainment among rural youth in South Dakota, a research design was devised which would reveal the social and personal factors associated with educational and occupational aspiration levels. If a relationship between these factors and high and low levels of aspiration exists, this information should be of interest to educators, parents, and adult s concerned with the youth potential of South Dakota. This study is a part of a research project conducted by the Rural Sociology Department at South Dakota State University in the spring of 1967. The general aims of the …

Effects Of Aldrin On Young Pheasants Under Semi-Natural Conditions, Ronald Eugene Thill Jan 1969

Effects Of Aldrin On Young Pheasants Under Semi-Natural Conditions, Ronald Eugene Thill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effects of aldrin on young pheasants were studied under semi-natural conditions in four one-acre enclosures during the summer of 1968. The center two-thirds of each plot was planted in corn; remaining peripheral cover was maintained in smooth brome and alfalfa. Prior to planting, center portions of two plots were sprayed with 2 pounds of aldrin per acre on Hay 20, while remaining plots served as controls. On June 12, four family units consisting of two broody pheasant hens and two bantam hens with 15 three-day-old chicks each were confined in plots. Hens and broods were given free run 10 days …

The Effect Of Replication On Queueing Simulations, Musvathy K. Dyanesh Jan 1969

The Effect Of Replication On Queueing Simulations, Musvathy K. Dyanesh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many industrial systems may be characterized as an arrival of some type of unit (such as sales orders, batches of raw material to be transformed into parts or broken machines) to a system of servicing stations. In the service stations, the units are serviced in some manner. Thus, the sales order requires checking and preparation of additional paper work; the materials to be transformed require the machines upon which the production process takes place, and the broken machine requires the repair personnel. Waiting lines or queues may form due to lack of control over either the rate of arrival of …
