Hog production is a 100 million dollar per year agricultural industry in South Dakota. accounting for 15 per cent of the total farm income, ranking it second only to beef cattle in cash farm income. During the past 10 years the United States pig crop -has averaged 90.5 million head annually, remaining quite stable over that period, while in South Dakota the annual production over the same period has averaged 2.9 million head. with production increasing during the period, Aanderud 1. This represents 3.2 per cent of the United States production, ranking South Dakota ninth in annual production. Technological advances …

In the mid to late 1950's meat scientists and processors became increasingly aware of and interested in ante mortem and post-mortem stress and how it related to meat quality. This interest was generated largely from two problem conditions confronting the meat industry: pale, soft, exudative pork and dark cutting beef. Briskey et al. were the first to study the condition in pork. Further explorations were reported by Briskey, Hedrick et al., Lewis and Sayre et al. Research has characterized physical and chemical conditions associated with pale, soft and watery pork since it was first reported. This research was probably stimulated …

Computer Simulation Of Unsteady Flow In An Alluvial Channel By The Method Of Characteristics, Dennis Lynn Richards Jan 1971

Computer Simulation Of Unsteady Flow In An Alluvial Channel By The Method Of Characteristics, Dennis Lynn Richards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of dams have been constructed along alluvial rivers. These dams create reservoirs which serve to collect and store water, usually in large quantity, for use in supplying municipal needs, for supplying power and driving machinery, for furnishing irrigation, and for retaining the flow in time of floods. The characteristics of flow and the sediment-transport capacity of the channel change after these dams have been constructed. One of the major problems then confronting the hydraulic engineer is the rate of reservoir sedimentation and the change in river configuration. A problem of concern is the rapidity of reservoir sedimentation and …

On February 11, 1971, the Regents of Higher Education for the State of South Dakota determined to follow a course-of action that would eliminate the College of Engineering at South Dakota State University in favor of maintaining only one such college at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. This course of action was implied through the adoption of certain recommendations contained in the Master Plan submitted to the Board of Regents by the Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Richard Gibb.
It had been suggested, through the prior investigation and subsequent recommendations of various committees, that South Dakota should …

Seasonal Movements And Behavior Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Eastern South Dakota, Arthur V. Carter Jan 1971

Seasonal Movements And Behavior Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Eastern South Dakota, Arthur V. Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information was gathered on mobility, behavior, and related activities of pheasants from July 1966 to July 1968 by banding and/or marking 160 birds with backtags and radio transmitters. Food was readily available since the winters were mild with little snow. Birds moved less than 1/4 mile from roosting areas to cornfields and weed patches to feed. Numbers of birds dispersing from the study area in spring varied each of the years, but 60 to 70 remained there during the two reproductive seasons. Adult cocks traveled less than 1/4 mile when dispersing-and adult hens moved less than 1/2 mile. Movements by …
