An Incrementally Distributed Mathematical Model Of A Watershed, Charles Arnold Onstad
An Incrementally Distributed Mathematical Model Of A Watershed, Charles Arnold Onstad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The utilization of distributed input parameters enables hydrologists to more adequately cope with watershed management problems. A distributed system aids in evaluating alternative solutions designed to alleviate a problem situation. As a result, the objectives of this study were (1) to develop a hydrological framework delineating the surf ace configuration of a watershed to consider parameter distribution; (2) to develop a model of hydrologic performance of a watershed using existing techniques and amenable to the physical framework; and (3) to demonstrate the versatility of the model using hypothetical data. The model versatility was demonstrated by showing the effects of different …
An Electronic Ordering System For Table Service Restaurants, Thomas A. Roman
An Electronic Ordering System For Table Service Restaurants, Thomas A. Roman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the title of this paper suggests, we have designed an ordering system for table service restaurants. The "ordering system" is the process of communication from customer-to-waitress-to-cook. In this first chapter, some of the problems which occur in table service restaurants will be briefly discussed and described to give the reader an idea of what this ordering system will attempt to solve. The specific problems and the proposed solution will be pointed out. The reader is probably asking, "Just what is a table service restaurant?'' A service restaurant is a restaurant where there is some type of service provided--by waitresses, …
An Investigation Of A Hydrostatic Transmission, James Joseph Rother
An Investigation Of A Hydrostatic Transmission, James Joseph Rother
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years there has been a tremendous change taking place in the area of power transmission. The use of a hydrostatic transmission in place of the conventional gear-type transmission in power driven machines has increased substantially. The introduction by International Harvester Co. of a hydrostatic transmission into their fa.rm tractors has increased interest in this relatively new form of power transmission. The hydrostatic transmission was a logical next step over the increasing number of speeds offered in today’s farm tractor. A hydrostatic transmission allows the operator a choice of infinite speeds. This feature is especially important where the tractor …

A Study Of Monolithic Circuit Components, Mahendra Pratap Agrawal
A Study Of Monolithic Circuit Components, Mahendra Pratap Agrawal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research is concerned with the study of some monolithic circuit components--resistors and the p-n junctions of diodes and transistors. Because of the parasitic effects, these studies are original and valuable. The thesis is arranged in three sections. The first section is devoted to the parasitic effects in diffused resistors. The objective of the research was to find a suitable theoretical model for resistors which will predict input impedance magnitude and phase responses based on experimental observations. Some of the literature available on the parasitic effects in diffused resistors discusses the impedance magnitude response. Phase studies showing the nature of …
Cooling Load Calculations Of Heat Gain For Buildings, Hai- Chow Chen
Cooling Load Calculations Of Heat Gain For Buildings, Hai- Chow Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two recent papers [1,2] obtain formulas for temperature variations caused by the varying flow of solar heat through windows. These two works are used in the present study to develop a computer program for calculating the transient cooling load required to maintain the interior of a building at a given temperature. We assume that the building is standing by itself without surrounding radiating buildings or pavements. The heat gain through semi-transparent single or composite barriers is combined with the accompanying heat gain through the opaque walls; see Figure 1. The analytical solutions given in [1,2] cannot be represented directly as …
Temperature Effects On Integral Abutment Bridges During Early Construction Stages, Mumtaz Bashir Sarsam
Temperature Effects On Integral Abutment Bridges During Early Construction Stages, Mumtaz Bashir Sarsam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this research was to study and evaluate the effects of thermal movements on integral abutment bridges during early construction stages. Particular emphasis was placed on the evaluation of the resultant state of stress of the upper portion of the steel piling and portions of the girders immediately adjoining the integral abutment. A full-scale model representing the end portion of a typical highway bridge was constructed and tested in two stages: a) After the girders were erected and welded to the bearing piles, but before the integral abutment concrete was poured. b) After the integral abutment was …
The Role Of Rainfall Impact And Surface Flow In Soil Detachment And Transport, Robert Alan Young
The Role Of Rainfall Impact And Surface Flow In Soil Detachment And Transport, Robert Alan Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil erosion caused by rainfall is a very complex physical process. To evaluate the mechanism of erosion so that an assessment can be made of the extent to which it may be controlled necessarily begins with an understanding of the basic fundamental factors involved. The purpose of this study involves the development of an insight of the relative importance of the roles played by various contributors to the erosion process. Particular emphasis is placed on the contribution of rainfall detached soil to total soil loss. Three soil types, Barnes loam, Crofton silt loam and Central sandy loam, were prepared with …
A Simulation Of Sediment Deposit In Open Channels, Tsan-Wen Wang
A Simulation Of Sediment Deposit In Open Channels, Tsan-Wen Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, two mathematical models have been developed to simulate sediment deposition in open-channel flow; a model based on three characteristic equations and a model based on two characteristic equations. A set of three partial differential equations for one dimensional transient flow with homogeneous density was provided to explain the mechanics of the phenomenon. By the method of characteristics, three partial differential equations were transformed into a set of three ordinary differential equations or a set of two ordinary differential equations by simplification in which the change of sediment layer thickness with respect to distance was assumed to be …
Analysis Of Variation Of River Flow And Water Quality In The White River Basin, Michael Stephen Thompson
Analysis Of Variation Of River Flow And Water Quality In The White River Basin, Michael Stephen Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main objectives of this White River Basin study were to analyze flow variation records, to investigate existing river water quality data as compared with the designated beneficial uses for the basin and to consider the influence of present and future irrigation development. Data were collected from a number of sources and brought together for interpretation with respect to these objectives. The streamflow study utilizes the streamflow records from 10 gaging stations in the White River Basin. It is expected that the results of this investigation may be of assistance to the South Dakota Water Resources Commission and the South …
Major Themes In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., June A. Anderson
Major Themes In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., June A. Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. has written six novels which explore some of the most important problems confronting man in contemporary society. Little significant criticism has been written on Kurt Vonnegut since he began writing in 1949. Recently, however, he has experienced an increasing popularity with readers and critics who have found his novels successful probings into modern man’s feelings of alienation in a world which he perceives as increasingly absurd. This thesis is an analysis of Kurt Vonnegut’s use of black humor, satire and science fiction devices in his exploration of four major themes occurring throughout his novels: criticisms of science, …
Carlyle's Literature Of Heroism And Its Contemporary Model--Mao, Kang-I Eleanor Chang
Carlyle's Literature Of Heroism And Its Contemporary Model--Mao, Kang-I Eleanor Chang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today when millions of Chinese people are shouting, "Long Live Chairman Mao” and waving their red books with flaming, uncontrollable enthusiasm, one wonders whether the worship is genuine, and whether this is the kind of worship which Carlyle means. However, the main emphasis of this thesis is on Carlyle's concept of heroism. Carlyle was greatly obsessed with the heroic ideal. After he was disappointed with the lack of modern heroes in America, he longed for a heroic nation to admire. Thus Carlyle, after a long pilgrimage became the good friend of Germany and the worshiper of German great men. He …
Factors Influencing Irregular Compaction Curves, Ching- Yee Hsu
Factors Influencing Irregular Compaction Curves, Ching- Yee Hsu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The important influences of temperature on the compaction curves has been given little consideration, A.W. Johnson and J. K. Jallberg summarized primarily from a search of the literature that increasing the temperature leads to increase the maximum dry density 0£ the single peak curve. They explained that the water in the soil is more viscous at the lower temperature, reducing the workability of the soil, which induces a lower dry density. Some investigations which were not involved· in the compaction tests, have shown the temperature effect on some soil properties. From the results of confined and undrained compression test, M. …
Finite Element Analysis By Structure Iteration, Richard William Macek
Finite Element Analysis By Structure Iteration, Richard William Macek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A new approach in the application of 'the Finite Element Method to determine the stress distribution in stress concentration zones has been proposed and investigated. This approach uses the forces on the elements relatively far removed from the concentration zone to obtain the stresses near the zone by an iterative procedure, "Iterative Shrink1ng." For certain geometries applicable to high concentration zones, i.e. singularities in the stress field, it was shown that the basic equation of "Iterative Shrinking" reduces to simply the remultiplying of the starting matrices. In this case, termed "Conformal Shrinking," the computational effort reduces considerably. The problem of …

Lyapunov Stability Analysis Of Power Systems, R. Unnikrishnan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the past ten years, a vast outflow of research and publications has resulted from the use of Lyapunov's "second or direct method" of stability analysis. This research trend stems from the appearance of the original work of Lyapunov in 1892, more than three quarters of a century ago; but only recently has this concept been appreciated to the point where researchers in the area of stability of dynamic systems are aware of its potentialities. La Salle and Lefschetz wrote the first comprehensive book in English about Lyapunov stability theory. In most cases describing a physical system, the energy stored …
