Previous instigations of common ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, variety elatior L., have revealed several interesting aspects. The primary objectives of this research were to determine the location within the common ragweed, solubility characteristics, a method of purification, and the effects of the inhibitor on other biological organisms. Secondary objectives dealt with the dormancy of ragweed seeds and the effects of photoperiod upon ragweed plants. The method selected to carry out the objectives involved: (a) location and extraction of the inhibitor at various stages of development of ragweed, (b) purification of the inhibitor, and (c) determining the effects of the inhibitor on …

A Column Chromatographic Analysis Of Organic Acids In Silage, Roger Everett Bawdon

The purpose of this study was to determine the quantity of organic acids present in silage. To be sure that the methods of analysis were correct, two different procedures were used: column and gas-liquid chromatographic analysis. To determine the actual quantities of the organic acids, 36 samples from various containers were used. The containers used were concrete silos, 55 gallon barrels, and also some samples were analyzed which were ensile din pint, quart, and one-half gallon jars. It was found that there is no real definite amount of organic acid produced in different silage fermentations.

As a means of developing a more quantitative approach to the study of soil morphology, quantitative standards for the consistent observation and characterization of the morphologic features were developed. The development of quantitative values for the features of soil morphology also was undertaken, first, to provide a means through which the results of detailed soil morphology studies made using the quantitative standards could be presented graphically, and secondly, as a pilot study pointed toward the possibility of the field determination of certain soil properties, common to both the field and laboratory study of soils, with a degree of quantitativeness presently …

Introduction: In the days of the early pioneers in South Dakota and other sparsely settled areas, there was no problem in finding a sufficient supply of water for drinking, cooking, and washing purposes. The problems of waste disposal were taken care of by the microorganisms in the soil, the microorganisms easily being able to keep pace with the few settlers. As cities and towns began to form, usually along a stream where there was an abundant supply of fresh water, sewage disposal became a growing problem. Fishery waters overpopulated with desirable species generally produce few harvestable fish because of slow growth rates. In 1962 Bennett stated that no fish of harvestable were found in some waters thus affected. Eschmeyer (1936) made a similar observation concerning overcrowded populations of yellow perch (Perca flavescens). For lack of more efficient remedial measures the use of piscicides has been recommended to reduce the numbers the numbers of the problem species. Relatively low toxaphene concentrations in two North Dakota lakes substantially reduced the density of the yellow perch population the effect on other fish species was less obvious. This report attempts (1) to present background information on the current status of Vietnamese education, (2) to show the structure, operation, and progress of educational organizations in Vietnam, and (3) to offer source materials useful for further study of the Vietnamese school policies and practices. The study contains both descriptive and statistical information on the marked features of the Vietnamese national school system from kindergarten to university. Every effort has been made to draw together the available up-to-date material and scattered data, and to present these in a uniform and systematic pattern, using the American equivalent terminology for comparative information …

The induction of true-breeding diploid mutants in certain varieties of Sorghum Vulgare Pers. by application of 0.5 per cent colchicine in lanolin to the coleoptile of the seedlings has been previously reported. Both cytological and genetical evidences obtained by various investigators have indicated the occurrence of gene mutations previous to or concurrent with the reduction division. The repeated occurrence of mutants with identical phenotypes involving whole complexes of characters raises the problem of whether identical major chromatin rearrangements or identical mutagenic effects are responsible. The several varieties of wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) formerly ranged over much of what is now eastern, central and southwestern United States. A large portion of the species habitat was destroyed by logging and by clearing forest land for agricultural use. Wild turkey population, were also directly decimated because of bunting by early settlers. Edminister (1954) estimated present Wild turkey range to be approximately 1 per cent of the historic range.
