Many experiments have been performed to determine the effect of ultra-violet light upon the growth of plants and animals. The conclusions reached by the experiments concerned are not constant in all cases. The more significant of these studies are here reviewed. Sheard and Johnson (17) state that the skin is the medium which separates the organism, whether it be plant or animal, from its environment. The skin is, therefore, the medium of reception of radiant energy and the seat of transformation or utilization of the incident energy. Light in its various phases exerts a marked influence on the functional as well as the physical structure of all living matter. The phenomena of light involves two theories: (1) the wave or electro-magnetic theory conceiving light as consisting of electric emanations or waves of various frequencies and intensities given off from many substances. It has long been known that adventitious roots develop from shoots and that adventitious shoots develop from roots. This fact is an important one to the horticulturist in propagating plants by stem or, root cuttings. The point of origin of these structures has not been fully presented. There have been various assumptions mad e as to where and how the adventitious structures arise. To avoid confusion, it is best to indicate that adventitious structures are those which are added to the plant; they are not the normal structures of the plant but are superfluous. A species of Grindelia known as Gum, Rosin or Tar weed, is of common occurrence on dry banks and sandy soils in various parts of South Dakota. During day seasons it attains such a dense growth in closely cropped pastures that horses feeding in them have their heads and manes covered with a black tarry-like substance, and their fetlocks collects fairly large ball of this tarry mass. In dry years the development of the weed is so rapid that the grass in a closely cropped pasture may be nearly exterminated during a single season. A pasture may seem to be …

It is not the primary purpose of this present work to treat the problem of the evolution of behavior, but rather to give an analysis of animal behavior as observed. These observations may appear as simple tests, but they make possible a new way to measure the capacity and determine the rate of learning by the animal mind. Progress in learning takes place through increased variety and precision of the movements brought about by stimulation and is very clearly observed in Amoeba, where we find the production of varied movements and the resolution of one physiological state into another. In the summer of 1921, Professor E.J. Petry noted an unusually severe uredinial infection on a small patch of Spartina cynosuroides (L) Roth, along the Chicage and northwestern right-of-way near Brookings, South Dakota. Along with this occurred an aecidial infection on Steironema ciliatum (L) Raf. Since the Steironema was small and mingled with the Spartina in places, a connection between the telial stage of the latter with the aecidial attack was trongly suspected. The infection occurred only on the lower leaves of the Steironema and this heightened the probabili8ty of infection from the teliospore sporadia of the Spartina which lay …

The most important non-protein nitrogenous constituents of milk are urea, creatinine, creatine, and uric acid. Urea is the diamide of carbonic acid and is the chief end-product, so far as nitrogen is concerned, of the physiological metabolism of the proteins of the foods and tissues. It has long been considered a matter of greatest importance to ascertain in what organ or tissues urea is formed.
