Disposal of poultry manure is becoming a greater problem as confinement of bird increases, flocks become larger, and poultry acreages decrease. Also, poultry production units are moving closer to urban areas, necessitating greater sanitation practices. Water pollution caused by surface runoff of farm animal wastes has caused additional concern for proper disposal methods. Several methods of disposal of poultry manure that have been proposed as solutions include: digesting, lagooning, field spreading as a liquid, field spreading of fresh droppings, drying, and composting. An individual’s conception of his health may be influenced by social as well as physical and psychological considerations. The problem under investigation is to determine whether certain social bariables are related to conception of health and, if they are, to describe a health status-role suggested by the variables considered. Health is no longer considered to be exclusively a biological phenomenon. It is influenced by psychological and sociological forces as well as physical ones. There is an increasing trend towards the concentration of poultry populations. With the increased popularity of confinement housing and the purchasing of the feed, less land is needed to raise and keep poultry. A serious problem arising from this change is that manure disposal is becoming increasingly difficult for owners of large poultry flocks. Lagoons have been used as a means of poultry waste disposal. This method of manure treatment is not new. Natural drying of edible seeds and fruits with the aid of the sun and wind is one of the oldest methods of preserving food and was practiced even by the people of the Stone Age. Drying means the removal of water, whereas dehydration means the application of special techniques for the removal of water with minimum damage to appearance, flavor, texture, and nutritive value. Among various methods of dehydration, freeze-drying most satisfactorily fulfills the requirements of minimum damage. Wool blankets are important to the economy of the state since South Dakota is one of ten leading states in wool production. Wool’s greatest competitor, synthetic fibers, has increased in production from 85.2 million pounds in 1949 to 470.5 million pounds in 1958, an increase of approximately 550 percent. This competition by synthetic fibers has resulted in the wool industry undertaking intensive re-search to develop finishes that would improve the quality of wool products. Results of South Dakota and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Stations research indicated that wool blankets ranked highest of all fiber types in warmth qualities, however, shrinkage in …

Food Habits Of Bigmouth And Smallmouth Buffalo In Lewis And Clark Lake And The Missouri River, Thomas S. Mccomish

Food habits were determined for 386 bigmouth buffalo and 277 smallmouth buffalo collected in 1962 and 1963 from Lewis and Clark Lake and the Missouri River. Young-of-the-year bigmouth buffalo stomachs contained 100 percent zooplankton. Bigmouth buffalo (330 to 530 millimeters) stomachs contained 99 percent zooplankton in 1952 and 95 percent in 1963. Digestive tracts of young-of-the-year smallmouth buffalo contained 99 percent copepods and one percent sand. Smallmouth buffalo (250 to 400 millimeters) contained about 65 percent zooplankton, 30 percent phytoplankton, and the remaining five percent consisted of chironomid larvae, plant detritus, and sand.

Homeostatic Relationships Of Single- And Double-Crosses Of Corn, Rodney Orlyn Hexem

The inherent homeostatic properties of single- and double- cross corn hybrids were studied by growing the plant materials in six locations over three years. Measurements of plant height and ear weight were recorded and used to calculate means and variances. Variances were pooled over locations and years and confidence intervals for the variance estimates were computed by use of the chi-square method. A lower variance for an entry, when compared with other entries grown in the same environment, was considered to be the result of relatively better homeostatic properties. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between muscular strength and predicted academic success of selected freshmen male college students at South Dakota State University. The muscular strength test used was taken from the cable-tension battery and the predicted academic success factor was represented by the American College Test composite score. Thirty freshmen male college students were randomly selected according to their American College Test composite score. All athletes and students in strenuous classes of physical education had been previously eliminated. The subjects were then given a four test battery of cable tension strength tests to determine …

Green needlegrass (Stipa viridula Trin.) in the past few years has received wide acceptance for use in range renovation throughout the Northern Great Plains. Maximum germination of newly harvested green needlegrass seed cannot be obtained due to a high incidence of seed dormancy. This study was undertaken to determine the nature of dormancy present in green needlegrass seeds, to study the mode of expression of factors that causes dormancy in the seeds, and to seek a method which will reduce the dormancy in order to obtain maximum germination readings in the laboratory and in field plantings. One of the primary means of evaluating the effectiveness of an organization or function is to contact the people who have been served. With this thought, a follow-up study of the graduates from Belview High School was undertaken during the 1962-1963 school year. The main intent of this study was the evaluation of the curriculum by the students whom it had served. Of additional interest was the graduates’ concepts of needed services and additional subject areas conceived from deficiencies encountered in post-high school undertaking. The effect on nitrogen fixation of additions of washings and the dialysate derived from the Aerobacter aerogenes culture fixing nitrogen has been studied. The effects on nitrogen fixation of limited supplements of casein hydrolysate and ammonium acetate as sole sources of nitrogen and in combination have been compared. Data has been presented to show that addition of washings or the dialysate to the growth medium stimulates nitrogen fixation. Similarly, in the presence of casein hydrolysate, the starved and the nonstarved cells fixed nitrogen much earlier than the control cultures with no supplements of exogenous nitrogen. Soil scientists have recognized that there are differences in crop adaptability and yields of crops and range grasses among the well-drained clay soils developed from Pierre shale in the Chestnut region of western South Dakota. It is difficult, however, to measure quantitative differences in soil characteristics among these soils which are unlike agronomically. As a result the Pierre soil series which includes well-drained clay soils developed from clay residuum over bedded shale is mapped over the entire area. The reason that these fine textured soils appear similar is that the dark olive-hued shale and shale residuum tends to mask out …
