Wild cats is problem in the small grain areas because it has certain characteristics which allow it to survive and infest the soil. It is an ecological equivalent to the crops with which it grows. It sheds its seed as they ripen and all seeds do not ripen at the same time. The seeds are dormant at the time they are shed and remain so for varying lengths of time; they may also go into secondary dormancy. Any effective control must encourage germination and destruction of plants before seed production. Wild oats rates as the most troublesome weed in an …

The metabolic pathway by which certain microorganisms incorporate atmospheric nitrogen into their protoplasm is at the present time unknown. In an attempt to determine this pathway scientists are studying the physiology of various nitrogen fixing bacteria and are within reasonable limits extrapolating this information from one organism to another. Thus far they have found certain physiological characteristics which appear to be common to all nitrogen fixing bacteria. Several years ago a species of the genus Achromobacter was isolated and shown to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Thus far very little has been published concerning the physiology of nitrogen fixation by this organism. …

Weeds have been with man for countless years and it is evident that they will be with man for many more. As tillable land decreases and population increases, weeds will have to be controlled to insure the best land use. Weeds are controlled by cultural, biological and chemical methods. Cultural practices are most widely used and generally the most practical. Biological control is useful only in specific areas. Chemical control of weeds was not widely used method until the discovery of selective herbicides about 1900. A group of chemicals now receiving much attention are the herbicides commonly called “pre-emergence chemicals.” …

The passage of nuclear radiations through materials may cause chemical and physical changes in these materials. Particles of ionizing radiation pass some or all of their energy to the electrons of the material and thus cause ionization or excitations. Because of the significance of water in biological and chemical systems, its decomposition by nuclear radiation has been studied. Processes of ionization and excitation cause the formation of the free radicals (H) and (OH) from pure water. These may react to form H2O2. In a biological system the effects of ionizing radiation on H2O may ultimately result in cellular disturbances. For …

Studies On The Persistence Of Corynebacterium Insidiosum In Soil And Of An Antagonistic Variant Of The Species, Gordon Albert Nelson

Studies were conducted on the persistence in of Corynebacterium insidiosum, the alfalfa wilt bacterium, and on an antagonistic variant of that species. The persistence was followed by plate counting colonies from soils heavily inoculated with cells of this bacterium. The antagonistic variant of the species was studied directly and from cells or culture filtrates spot-planted on agar media containing seeding of other bacteria. Most cells of the wilt bacterium remained viable on glass surfaces for over 7 months at different temperatures, and in moist sterilized soil for over 72 days at room temperature. Corresponding to the title, the present study was concerned with two aspects. In the first of these, two chlamydosporous sori from corn were collected from California and Washington and 18 chlamydosporous sori from sorghum were collected from California, New Mexico, Texas, and India. Chlamydosporous cultures or paired monosporidial cultures from these were hypodermically injected as desired into seedlings of one or more of four sweet corn varieties and 57 sorghum varieties. Chlamydosporous cultures from the two corn sources yielded head smut on three sweet corn varieties and not on any of 14 sorghum varieties. Cultures from 14 of 18 sorghum …

For the most part of our schools are geared to the average student and educators have been cognizant of the possible waste of rich human resources. Many persons feel that the gifted students of South Dakota, as well as other states, are entitled, by virtue of our democracy, to a full development of their potentials. An aquatic environment involves many complex relationships biologically, physically, and chemically. Many of these relationships are difficult to measure or are little understood. In nature, aquatic environments accommodate many types of aquatic life. Ecological disturbances may cause the environment to become unfit for economically important forms of life. Human interferences often causes polluted waters and naturally occurring disturbances are common. A disturbance of this kind is one of the major problems of fisheries management in the northern Great Plains area – seasonal anaerobosis of fish or other aquatic animals and plants, commonly known as winter kill. In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the evaluation of protein quality rather than the total quantity of protein in foods. The purpose of this essay is to trace the development of the concept of mysticism from selected early works of John Steinbeck to its culmination in the novel the Grapes of Wrath. The works to be discussed are the following: The Features of Heaven, To a God Unknown, In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, The Red Pony, The Grapes of Wrath, and Sea of Cortez.
