Teacher Bias And Elementary Student Disciplinary Outcomes, Madeline A. Griffitt
Teacher Bias And Elementary Student Disciplinary Outcomes, Madeline A. Griffitt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The discipline of students has long been an issue in schools. Children and teenagers are just that, and they will misbehave. However, the discipline gap clearly indicates that responses to misbehavior are different for different students (Lorenzetti & Johnson, 2023; Santiago-Rosario et al., 2021). Black students are disciplined more frequently and more severely than any of their peers (Kupchik & Ward, 2014; Welsh & Rodriguez, 2024). This study investigates what, if any, relationship exists between a teacher’s race, gender, age, and bias score (as measured by Project Implicit’s (n.d.) single category race implicit bias test) and the number of referrals …
An Interpretable Hybrid Deep And Reinforcement Learning Paradigm For Glioma Prognosis, Renuga Devi M Ms
An Interpretable Hybrid Deep And Reinforcement Learning Paradigm For Glioma Prognosis, Renuga Devi M Ms
Theses and Dissertations
Brain tumors are highly aggressive and lethal types of cancer, particularly gliomas. These cancerous growths show complicated pathophysiological behaviours and with poor prognosis despite therapeutic advances. Due to their biological differences and infiltrating growth, as well as overlapping radiological characteristics, they pose great difficulty in diagnosis, grading, and survival prediction. Artificial intelligence technology, which includes machine learning , deep learning, and reinforcement learning has developed into a new paradigm for the automation of brain tumor diagnostics and personalized treatment. The main goal of this study is to create an integrated AI-based framework that can perform brain tumor segmentation, grading and …

Development Of Deep Fused Neural Architecture For Ancient Tamil Palm-Leaf Manuscript Recognition, Hariharan P Mr
Theses and Dissertations
Digitizing Tamil palm-leaf manuscripts is important for education, communication, and the preservation of cultural heritage. The complex structure of the Tamil script, the wide range of handwriting styles, and the degradation seen in ancient Tamil palm-leaf manuscripts make these texts very difficult to read and understand. Digital Image Processing (DIP), document analysis techniques, and traditional Optical Character Recognition (OCR) are unable to handle noise, background interference, faded ink, and limited labelled data, motivating the need for robust, effective Deep Learning (DL)- based solutions.
As a prerequisite to understanding and designing effective recognition systems for ancient manuscripts, this thesis first examines …

The role of the cohesin complex depends on the cohesin loader proteins NIPBL and MAU2. While NIPBL variants are a major cause of Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS), the role of MAU2 in disease is unclear. We describe 18 individuals carrying 15 heterozygous MAU2 variants and demonstrate pathogenicity through functional analyses. In-frame MAU2 variants predominantly impair NIPBL-MAU2 interaction, whereas truncating variants cause MAU2 haploinsufficiency and lead to NIPBL reduction. Most individuals exhibit a DNA methylation profile compatible with the CdLS episignature. We also describe two MAU2-specific episignatures that reflect variant-dependent molecular consequences. Affected individuals display a wide range of phenotypes, …

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare ciliopathy resulting in chronic oto-sino-pulmonary disease. PCD diagnosis can be achieved by a combination of different diagnostic and adjuvant tools, including high-speed video-microscopy analysis (HSVA). A founder variant has been described in Puerto Rico as the most common cause of PCD in the island. Background/Objectives: In HSVA, objective parameters such as ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and subjective parameters such as ciliary beat pattern (CBP) shed light on the biophysical properties of cilia. However, the subjective nature of CBP creates a gap in knowledge; characteristics such as the length, angle, and bending index of …

High-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is the most common subtype of ovarian cancer, most commonly originating from the epithelium of the fallopian tube. In metastasis of HGSOC cells, there is a particular predilection for the omentum. Metastatic involvement of extraperitoneal lymph nodes, particularly the inguinal region, is rare and may pose a diagnostic challenge. We report a case of an 87-year-old female patient presenting with a right inguinal mass, in whom the pathology of the surgically removed mass confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic HGSOC, requiring oncological follow-up and management. This atypical pattern of spread underscores the importance of considering a …

Objectives: The study aimed to examine the association between a dietary index for gut microbiota (DI-GM) and the risk of incident colorectal cancer (CRC). Clarifying the role of diet-induced alterations in the composition and function of gut microbiota on the development of CRC can contribute to prevention efforts. Methods: Participants from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening trial enrolled in the intervention arm and who completed baseline assessments were included in the analysis (n = 55,685). The DI-GM is a literature-derived index used to score diet quality in terms of maintaining healthy gut microbiota. A time-dependent Cox model …

Castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) progresses despite androgen deprivation therapy, as cancer cells adapt to grow without testosterone, becoming more aggressive and prone to metastasis. CRPC biology complicates the development of effective therapies, posing challenges for patient care. Recent gene-expression and metabolomics studies highlight the Hexosamine Biosynthetic Pathway (HBP) as a critical player, with key components like GNPNAT1 (Glucosamine-phosphate N-acetyltransferase 1) being downregulated in CRPC. GNPNAT1 knockdown in pre-clinical models has been shown to increase growth and metastasis in CRPC tumors, though the mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate the cellular basis of these CRPC phenotypes, we generated a CRISPR-Cas9 knockout model of …

The Qualitative Report
This article examines the intersectional experiences of queer scholars of color in STEM and STEM education. Using arts-informed research methods, we conducted and analyzed five interviews and a focus group transcript that focused on the support and hurdles that five participants encountered and the strategies they utilized to navigate their work in STEM and STEM education. We identified that, against the backdrop of prevailing heteronormativity and normative whiteness in STEM, participants compartmentalized their STEM and social identities, felt compelled to negotiate the risks of coming out, and assumed the double burden and invisible work of students who were queer and/or …

Bismuth oxide (Bi₂O₃) nanoparticles were synthesized via a green route and integrated into Bi₂O₃/Si heterojunction solar cells. Structural analysis confirmed the monoclinic α-Bi₂O₃ phase with a nanoscale crystallite size, while SEM revealed a uniform morphology. Optical studies showed a direct band gap suitable for absorbing visible light. Photoluminescence spectra exhibited dual emissions at 498 nm and 250 nm, attributed to defect states and quantum confinement, highlighting the dual role of Bi₂O₃ as both absorber and transparent window layer. Electrical characterization under dark conditions demonstrated rectifying diode behavior, confirming the formation of a junction. Capacitance–voltage analysis yielded a built-in potential of …

The growing demand for sustainable construction materials has led to increased interest in utilizing agricultural wastes as eco-friendly alternatives. This study examines the potential of Avocado Seeds (AS), Mango Seeds (MS), and Mango Peels (MP) as additives in eco-floor tile production, incorporating them into cement mixtures through a quasi-experimental design. Various proportions of these agricultural by-products, collectively termed as Seeds and Peels Mixtures (SPM) were evaluated for compressive strength, flexural strength, and water absorption. A One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to assess the effects of different additive ratios. Results revealed that compressive strength peaked at 49.40 MPa with …

The global demand for renewable energy sources necessitates exploring sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. Coffee husks, a significant agricultural waste product, represent a potential feedstock for biofuel production. This study investigated the comparative efficacy of steam distillation and Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction (UAE), using ethanol as a solvent to extract crude extract from Coffea canephora husks. A comparative experiment was conducted using 200g of Coffea canephora husks for each extraction method replicated three times and the yields were measured in mL. An independent sample t-test was used to compare the mean yields between the two methods. UAE yielded significantly more crude extract …
