Selenium exhibits unusual biological properties in that it is a micro nutrient for animals (1) and some plants (2) and yet at slightly higher levels it may be very toxic (3,4). Neither the active forms of selenium nor the mechanisms by which its biological effects are produced are well understood. Thus, many aspects remain to the investigated in this area. Franke (9), while working with the affected grain at South Dakota State College, produced the toxic symptoms experimentally. Following the discovery by Robinson (10) of selenium in toxic forages and grains. Franke (12) further deduced that plants incorporate soil selenium …

The control of inventories is one of the most complex and far-reaching of all business activities. It is the focal point of many seemingly conflicting interests and considerations – both short and long range. It’s planning and execution involves participation by most of the functional segments of a business; sales, production, purchasing, finance and accounting. The end result achieved has a major bearing on the company’s financial strength and competitive position, since it directly affects the quality of service to customers, production costs, earnings and soundness of working capital position. The problem of disposal of animal wastes has increased with modern methods of mass producing hogs, poultry, and other livestock and livestock products. With the increase popularity of confinement housing and the purchase of feed, less land is needed to raise more livestock and less land is available for disposal of the manure produced. Several methods for the disposal of hog manure have been suggested by various authors I the fields of agriculture and engineering. Approximately two decades ago Robertson et al. (1948) reported that high-energy diets supported faster growth of young chicks with an improvement in feeding efficiency. This seemed to open an era in poultry nutrition in which much work was conducted in order to establish the quantitative relationships between dietary energy levels and nutrients. With current emphasis on the energy content of the diet, a knowledge of those factors which interfere with the most efficient utilization of energy is important. Under the provisions of the Smith-Hughes Act and supplementary acts comprehensive program of vocational education have been developed. Although much has been accomplished, existing programs need to be expanded and new programs developed if vocational education is to be made available to all who can profit from the instruction. In the past 30 years many aspects of biological nitrogen fixation have been studied intensively by many different workers. These studies have included: the agents of fixation, the physiology of fixation, inhibitors of fixation, and cell free nitrogen fixation and symbiont relationships during fixation. Ten years ago workers in the field postulated the nitrogenase system was adaptive in nature. This was the result of several workers finding it necessary to add a small amount of fixed nitrogen to their cultures before they would fix atmospheric nitrogen. The Corn rootworms are beetles of the family Chrysomelidae, genus Diabrotica whose larvae feed on the roots of corn. Large populations of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera Leconte, recently developed in Nebraska and surrounding states, thus increasing the economic importance of these insects. Widespread soil insecticide treatments for both species were adopted after 1951 and have become widely accepted. Considering their economic importance, little is recorded about the biology of rootworms. Perhaps this is because they are soil insects. This study was undertaken to provide some of the basic information necessary to research on better methods of control. Members …

The purpose of this study is to provide the reader, particularly the undergraduate, with an aid for studying John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle. In the course of this theses these four themes, namely, the phalanx theory, the concept of leadership and of ownership, and non-teleological thought, are examined first in Steinbeck’s writing in general, and then in novel In Dubious Battle in particular. Dairy scientists have known for a number of years that diacetyl is one of the principle flavor components of butter, buttermilk, and cheese cultures. Of the tests which have been introduced to determine diacetyl, one of the first was the heavy metal gravimetric method. This procedure involved distillation of the diacetyl from the mother substance. The most common derivative formed was nickel dimethylglyoximate. Principle disadvantage of this method were that large amounts of sample were required for steam distillation when the products were low in diacetyl. During the summer and fall of 1964, 292 fishes collected from Oahe and Big Bend Reservoirs in central South Dakota were examined for parasites. Sixty-five percent of the 18 different species of fishes examined were parasitized by at least one of the 16 species of parasites found. Seventy-five percent of the 162 fishes examined from Oahe Reservoir were found to be infected with at least one species pf parasite, and 54 percent of the 130 fishes examined from Big Bend Reservoir were infected. The fishes found to be harboring the largest number of species of parasites were the black bullheads …

Present theories describing polarography processes are inadequate for, they do not correctly predict experimental results. However, this use of the average conceals how poorly the instantaneous time-dependence of the diffusion current is represented. Accordingly this paper attempts to illuminate the situation and do what it can to remedy the problem. Some authors have sought to make theory agree with experiment by improving the approximate solution of the accepted partial differential equation. Such attempts have met with little success in predicting the instantaneous current. The present paper points out a flaw inherent in the accepted p.d.e. A few workers have adopted …
