To understand more fully the reasons for this Follow-up Study of Guidance and Counseling Graduates from South Dakota State University from 1957 to 1966, one must start looking at the history and development of the Guidance and Counseling program. The first guidance course offered at South Dakota State University was in 1928. The course was Vocational Guidance, and it dealt with the need for vocational guidance, duties of vocational counselors, methods of collection, preparing, and using occupational information for counseling, and vocational guidance in the small high school. The Systematics And Ecology Of The Characeae (Nitella And Chara) Of Southwestern United States And Northern Mexico., Donald R. Tindall

General. – The Characaeae is the only extant family of an ancient and unique group of nonvascular aquatic plants which are classified as a separate division, the Charophyta (Groves and Bullock-Webster, 1920; Zaneveld, 1940; Imahori, 1954; Bold, 1957; and others) or as a separate class in the Chlorophyta (Fritsch, 1944; Smith, 1950; Wood and Imahori 1965; and others). Charophytes, like many green algae, are relatively simple haplobiontic plants with zygotic meiosis. However, their complex sexual apparatus, characterized by gametangia enclosed within several sterile cells, distinguishes them from all green algae. The occasional contamination of foods by biologically active compounds arising from metabolic processes of mold contamination represents a situation which has probably existed since prehistoric times. This is due in part to the ubiquitous distribution of fungi and the frequent opportunity for their growth during the harvest and subsequent storage of foods, and the recognized capabilities of these organisms to produce complex molecules. In the past fifty years, numerous achievements have been made in the science of chemistry. Such achievements have required changes, both in industrial chemistry and in the teaching of chemistry. Traditionally, beginning chemistry has been taught as a descriptive science. Even presently, many secondary schools, colleges, and universities, offer a factual course emphasizing the factual data rather than the basic principles. Mental illness is a major drain on all types of productivity in the world. In the United States alone there are 63,226 patients in mental hospitals and another 174,727 in homes or schools for the mentally retarded. (1) South Dakota’s figures read 1,981 patients in mental hospitals and 895 in homes or schools for the mentally retarded. (2) The rehabilitation of these people would result in millions of dollars being saved plus the avoidance of untold sorrow and hardship for the patients and their families. Muscle fibers and connective tissue are known to affect tenderness. The partitioning of these two structures was first attempted by Lehman as early as 1897 (Wilson, et, al, 1954). Since that time chemical and histological work has been examined extensively to relate tissue components to tenderness. This study was undertaken to evaluate: (1) the effect of fixatives on (a) the reticular, collagenous, and elastic connective tissue of raw and cooked pork muscle and (b) the fiber diameter in the raw state; (2) the type and amount of connective tissue in pork muscle and the effect of heat on the various …

E.W. Hamilton (1964) reported a serious disease of Southern Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howaedi Barb. , at the Northern Grain Insect Research Laboratory, Brookings, South Dakota. The disease causing organism was isolated and tentatively identified as a Pseudomonas sp. Several antibiotics were tried in an attempt to rid the colony of this organism but these antibiotics had little effect. In the laboratory, larvae died at about the time they matured. If the infected larvae pupated, the pupae died or a deformed adult would emerge. In addition, females so deformed did not lay eggs. As a result of the disease, the …

Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of three farm ponds in south-central South Dakota were studied from June 1964 until December 1965. Maximum water temperature at the surface reached 25.2 C, while water temperatures at the bottom of the ponds were about 2 to 4C lower than the surface. Light transmission was influenced by turbidity but generally penetrated to the bottom of the ponds except during periods of cloudy ice and snow cover. Dissolved oxygen was near saturation during periods of open water. Most chemical ions in the ponds increased annually from a winter minimum to a spring maximum. Total dissolved …

The objectives if the research were threefold: 1. To determine the effect of increased kill and loading on an anaerobic pond system treating meat packing wastes. 2. To determine the effect of recirculation in an anaerobic pond system treating meat packing wastes. 3. To determine the insulating effect of a meat waste grease-scum. The extent of the research was limited to the anaerobic system.
Samples and records were taken at the MID Packing Company from November 1965 through March 1966. During the first period of sampling, data were collected which made possible an evaluation of the effect of higher kill. …
