Vitamins are defined as organic compounds required in small amounts to perform many essential functions in the animal body. All vitamins have different structures and perform different functions. Experimental research has shown that it is very important to supply adequate amounts of vitamins to insure normal growth and body maintenance of animals. Swine producers use completely mixed diets or the free choice feeding of corn and supplement, which includes proteins, minerals, vitamins and additives, as methods of supplying supplemental vitamins for pigs. Today, due to the ever-increasing educational requirements laid down by states and the increasing costs of education, many of the smaller districts have either been forced to close down or are lacking in one or more of the state requirements and are on the verge of losing their accreditation and ultimately their school. Dennis M. David made a survey of 135 citizens in five mid-western states and showed that only one-fourth of the people were aware that the purpose of reorganization of school districts is to provide better education. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of an interval running program on circulorespiratory efficiency, body adipose tissue, and body weight of college freshman women. Thirty students were selected randomly from volunteers from all of the freshmen women enrolled in the required freshman physical education program at South Dakota State University, equated by an oxygen consumption test, and placed in an experimental or control group. The experimental group participated in an interval running program over a six-week period. The workload consisted of running bouts on a graded treadmill with at specific interval rest period. There is much confusion connected with the terms “public relations,” “publicity,” and “public information.” Definitions of these terms will result in a better understanding of this study. Several elements are required to make this successful program a reality within a given community. Nitrates are absorbed from the soil by plants and serve as a source of nitrogen which is converted into protein and other nitrogen containing compounds. Plants usually contain relatively small amounts of nitrate because it is converted into other nitrogenous compounds rapidly after being absorbed. Under certain conditions some plants may accumulate fairly high concentrations of nitrate. While these high concentrations are not toxic to the plant, animals consuming them may sometimes show symptoms of nitrate toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is readily converted into nitrite which causes toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is …

For many years people have equated arsenic or compounds containing arsenic with poison. Inorganic arsenic compounds are used as chemotherapeutic agents as well as poisons. Organic arsenicals were introduced at the start of this century launching modern chemotherapy. The introduction of antibiotics in the 1940’s virtually replaced organic arsenicals in chemotherapy. Solutions of inorganic arsenic compounds are used as tonics for animals and to finish animals for show. Because arsenicals are excreted by animals in much the same structure as they are consumed and arsenite prevents both putrefaction and growth, it is possible the decomposition of animal excreta will be …

The importance of nitrogen in an aquatic ecosystem is quite well known. Nitrogen, being originally derived from the atmosphere, enters into a complex cycle involving both the plant and animal components of the ecosystem. The nitrogenous compounds of natural waters may be broken down into the main categories according to their source, either allochthones or autochthonous. Allochthones nitrogen is that derived from the outside sources and includes those compounds carried into the lake by precipitation, by surface runoff containing terrestrial nitrogen, or by the inflow of ground water. In 1960 the city of Brookings purchased a quarter section of land for a sanitary landfill. The site was located approximately two miles south of the city and was an inactive gravel excavation area prior to being used as a refuse disposal site (1-19). In the future, other parts of the quarter section, which are presently being used for farming operations, will be converted to fill areas as a need arises. The Brookings refuse disposal site is not operated as a conventional sanitary landfill, where all refuse is deposited in one cell, compacted, and covered without burning. Rather, the refuse …

The main objective of this study was to consider the problem of whether or not information about intermolecular interactions can be obtained from the examination of macroscopic properties of various systems. In this study it was chosen to investigate the intermolecular interactions of a liquid-liquid system. The liquid-liquid system, dioxane-water, was selected for two reasons. First, a considerable amount of work has been done on this particular systems so there is a large body of information with which to work and with which correlations can be made. Permeability is the physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct air or water through is macropores. This should not be confused with the infiltration rate, a term expressing the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. Whereas the infiltration rate is influenced by the hydraulic slope, permeability is not (12, p. 153)*. A term which is often confused with permeability is hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity is a velocity term, or (L/T), expressing the rate at which a fluid passes through the soil. Relationships between red foxes (Vulpes fulva) end their principal prey, particularly ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), were studied on four units in eastern South Dakota from December 1964 to September 1966. Each unit was composed of a 100-square-mile "reduction area," on which fox populations were reduced, and a 100-square-mile "check area," on which fox populations were not reduced for the study. Indices to populations of foxes, pheasants, mice, eastern cottontails (Svlvilagus floridanus) and whitetail jackrabbits (Lepus townsendi) were obtained and used to evaluate food habits and the effect of predator reduction on prey populations. Movement patterns of Semotilus atromaculatus, Rhinichthvs atratulus, Campostoma anomalum and Catostomus commersoni were investigated in an eastern South Dakota stream for a period of one year. Electrofishing, fin clipping and a multiple census method were employed. Population structures were estimated for each species. Populations were considered unstable due to the occurrence of appreciable emigration and immigration between sampling periods. Differential size class mobility was established for all species. Species exhibited upstream movement tendencies during the summer and more random movement tendencies during the fall. Size classes of S.atromaculatus, R. atratulus, and C. anomalum showed differential upstream movement affinities. Considerable growth …

Curd formation in a cultured dairy product is brought about by the addition of a bacterial culture capable of producing lactic acid from lactose. The primary function of this culture is to produce sufficient lactic acid to cause coagulation of the caseinate system of skimmilk. A secondary function of the culture is the production of flavor compounds considered to be desirable in these products. The flavor compounds produced by the normal growth of citric acid fermenting organisms are water soluble, and are largely removed during washing of the Cottage cheese curd. Many authorities believe that prophylactic treatment of idiopathic hypercholesterolemia will prevent atherosclerosis and plaque formation which almost always precedes clinical arteriosclerosis and subsequent degenerative heart disease. There has been intensive research investigation initiated to provide a pharmacologic agent that will lower elevated serum cholesterol levels in mammals including humans. Several hypocholesterolemic drugs are being tested at the present time, one of the most promising is the dextro-rotary isomer of thyroxine. Selenium is of interest to the animal nutritionists and to the biochemist from two standpoints. In some areas of the world it occurs in soils in excesses, and the plants growing in these soils contain levels of the element that are toxic to livestock that consume the plants. On the other hand, selenium appears to be essential to the well-being of certain animals, at least under some feeding regimens, and in a number of areas the soils produce feeds that are deficient in the element (48). At the South Dakota State University Dairy Science Department, a challenging work is being conducted to develop a new spread type· dairy product which is made almost entirely of dairy ingredients. It contains about 40% fat, 6% protein, 40% water, and 1.9% salts. Among the problems which faced the workers on this project were the process induced changes in the protein and the water holding capacity, which are interlinked.
