Maintaining these waters in a suitable condition for recreation and other beneficial uses has become the concern of most Americans. A Chromosome Study Of Chlorophytum Elatum, Dennis E. Driscoll

The spider plant, Chlorophytum elatum R. Br., a member of the family Liliaceae, is a native of South Africa. It has been propagated almost exclusively by vegetative means and it is now grown widely over the world as an ornamental plant. Many studies by other workers have revealed that with only two exceptions all species in the genus Chlorophytum have somatic chromosome numbers that are multiples of seven, ranging from 14 to 56 (c.f. Darlington and Wiley, 1955). Although the chromosome number of Chlorophytum elatum has ·been reported to be 2N = 28 (Sato, 1942; Baldwin and Speese, 1951) information …

Supplementation With Vitamins A And D Of Beef Cattle Finishing Rations Containing Various Levels Of Carotene From Corn Silage And Corn Grain, Harold Richard King

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the need for vitamin A and vitamin D supplements with rations composed of various levels or corn silage and corn grain when fed to cattle. Early investigations with vitamin D demonstrated that the reduced intensity or sunlight during the winter months resulted in decreased cutaneous formation of vitamin D and that dark- skinned animals synthesized less vitamin D than light skinned animals under given conditions of light intensity. Relationships Of Homologous Erythropoietin, L-Ascorbic Acid, And Iron Dextran To The Hemogram Of Newborn And Doe Rabbits, Lloud Edward Lippert

The neonatal-anemia syndrome, an anemia of newborn animals, in a commonly observed physiological phenomenon in swine, humans and rats. The severity of the anemia is subject to unpredictable individual variation, but may be modified by the nutrition of the dam. Alterations in swine neonatal hemogram values begin 3-5 days postpartum and include decreases in packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentration. Vigorous and healthy appearing newborn become weak and particularly subject to infective agents and stresses, which may terminate in death. A slow return to postpartum hemogram values is observed if the newborn animal survives. The economic considerations of newborn mortality …

The name "epizootic hemorrhagic disease" (EHD) of deer was first given by Shope et al. in 1955 because of the occurrence of the hemorrhagic disease in large epizootic_ proportions and because of its pathological features. It was also determined by them that the causative agent for the disease is a virus. Difficulties in studying the causative agent have been encountered because no host system other than the deer itself was available to support replication or detect the virus. However, isolation of the New Jersey strain of EHD virus was accomplished by Mettler et al. in 1962 using newborn mice and …

An assumption can be postulated that the auxin produced in the stem apex may inhibit bud development by preventing differentiation of vascular connections between the cauline bundle and the bud primordia. This would deprive the primordia of nutrients and growth substances being translocated in the mainstream vascular elements. The assumption is that prior to decapitation, vascularization is incomplete to the laterals in johnsongrass and that after decapitation, vascularization becomes complete. Dr. C. A. Stock cultures of a pure strain of C. ulmi were obtained from the Plant Science Department at South Dakota State University. The inoculum was maintained on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) in petri dishes. On this medium, the fungus produced a grayish white rather sparse and appressed mycelium. Conidia were produced in heads on branched conidiophores. Quite often some sectoring was observed on PDA. Cultures producing coremia, obtained on 2% American elm shavings (on dry weight basis) plus bacteriological agar (8 g/1), were also used as an inoculum source. As is shown, this medium produced coremia and very little vegetative mycelium. …

In the early part of this century it was observed that certain microorganisms could grow in the absence of fixed nitrogen. Since those early observations there has been an intensive effort to unravel the mystery behind the physiology of nitrogen fixation. It was not until development of the use of heavy isotopes that we begin to learn the mechanism of biological nitrogen fixation. It was the object of this study to determine if glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) was present in A. vinelandii when it was fixing nitrogen. The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera Leconte, the northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica longicornis (Say), and the southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber, are major pests of corn in the corn belt region. In South Dakota, the western and northern corn rootworms are the two predominant species that produce economic damage. The damage produced by this insect complex has elevated them to the position of the number one corn insect pest. The development of a systematic procedure to fractionate cells into functional components is important to many current problems in biological research. Polyribosomes are of considerable interest since it is this cell fraction which is the site of protein synthesis. They are unique structures in that they are reported to contain the transcribed genetic information in the form of messenger RNA (mRNA) which functions as the binding site for ribosomes in the decoding process. At a 1961 symposium on ground water contamination and later in 1963 at a national conference on solid wastes, concern was shown for the protection of one of our most valuable resources - ground water. It was felt at both conferences that a definite need existed for more research in areas pertaining to the nature and mobility of chemical and biological contaminants leached from refuse disposal areas. The protein requirement of the laying hen encompasses a problem of great importance to the nutritionist. With the discovery of amino acids, which are commonly referred to as "the building blocks of protein," it was soon evident that the fowl had a requirement primarily for amino acids, not protein. It has been difficult to establish the exact amino acid requirements of each species and age group.
