The four species of cereal aphids used in this study were the English grain aphid, Macrosiphum avenae (Fab.), the oat bird-cherry aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and the corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch). Aphid colonies were maintained on barley CI 666 in the greenhouse. Only active adult apterae from the stock colonies were counted into the cages. All tests were run in Percival or Sherer controlled environment chambers operating from 2O°C to 27°C, and with a photoperiod of 16 hours of light (3,000 Ft-c supplied by fluorescent and incandescent bulbs). The Big Sioux River originates in northeastern South Dakota and in general flows southward to Sioux City, Iowa, where it joins the Missouri River. A major portion, 69 percent, of the Big Sioux River Basin is located in South Dakota. The remaining 31 percent of the basin's 9,570 square miles is distributed almost equally between the states of Iowa and Minnesota. The climate of the Big Sioux River Basin is described as midcontinental, subhumid, and with rapid fluctuation of temperature. The purpose of the study was to establish the scientific authenticity of the Dvorak evaluation test of fundamental locomotor movement for beginners in modern dance. Since Dvorak accepted content validity, reliability and objectivity of the evaluation device were investigated and norms developed. The following procedures were employed. In addition to reviewing the literature, the investigator wrote to 22 college and university instructors to obtain information as to the availability of locomotor skills tests for modern dance. From the 12 responses received, no valid test was found. Seventeen colleges and universities were contacted asking for their participation in the study. From …

The milk processing industry commonly produces large quantities of high-strength waste. Frequently, a milk processing plant is located in a small agricultural community in which it is the only sizable industry. Because of this, the wastewater from the milk plant may cause overloading of the wastewater treatment facilities of the community. This situation exists in Volga, a small town in eastern South Dakota. The city of Volga, with an estimated 1967 population of 840, has been treating the domestic wastewater plus the industrial waste from the relatively large milk processing plant by utilizing a stabilization pond system. Both anaerobic and aerobic treatment of wastewater has been used for many years. Some of the common aerobic treatment systems include oxidation or stabilization ponds, activated sludge, trickling filters, and aerated lagoons. Anaerobic treatment has been most commonly used for digestion of sewage sludge. However, septic tanks, anaerobic lagoons, and anaerobic activated sludge (contact stabilization) units are used to treat wastewater anaerobically. More recently, the two systems have been used in combination, with the anaerobic system preceding the aerobic one. The purpose of the research described in this thesis was twofold. Attempts were made to prepare several 4-alkyl (aryl)-2-methylsemicarbazides, many of which had not been prepared previously. The successful synthesis involved the addition of alkyl and aryl isocyanates to methyl hydrazine under controlled conditions. Secondly, the products from the pyrolysis of the semicarbazides were characterized and found to be 4-alkyl (aryl)-1-methylurazoles. The mechanism of the thermal reaction was elucidated. It was hoped, based on structural similarities to known active agents, that biologically active materials would be obtained. Products are currently undergoing evaluation for biological activity. The purpose of this study was to utilize Hall's method of anthropometric measurements on a select sample of South Dakota wrestlers, and to compare the results of Hall's method with the current procedure of establishing minimum weights. The subjects included wrestlers competing in four of eight district tournaments during the 1969 State tournament series. Five body measurements were taken from each competitor. The measurements included were: (1) height; (2) chest width; (3) chest depth; (4) width at the illiac crests; (4) thigh circumference. These raw data were converted to predicted minimum weight by using a regression equation developed by Hall. …

Biever, working in this laboratory, isolated numerous diphtheroidal organisms from cattle and swine sources. These anaerobic diptheroids were morphologically similar to organisms in the genera Corynebacterium and Actinomyces. King and Meyer found that isolates of anaerobic diptheroids from human sources were more closely related to the Corynebacterium based upon metabolic and serologic differentiation. Their work consisted of separating A. bovis from several isolates of anaerobic diptheroids on the basis of the catalase test, litmus milk reactions, and the fermentation of xylose, salicin, and raffinose. The morel, Morchella, of which there are several species, abounds throughout the United States. Several common names have been applied to this organism depending upon the area. Names include sponge, sponge on a stalk, honeycomb (because of its appearance), common more, delicious morel, hickory chicken (it is found among hickory leaves), and mushroom (the most common name in South Dakota). The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effects of three different weight training programs on the development of muscular strength, muscular endurance, muscular girth, and cardiovascular endurance. Thirty freshman and varsity football players from the 1968 South Dakota State University football teams were used as subjects. The subjects were randomly divided into three different groups. One group trained using a modification of the DeLorme-Watkins method of training; the second group followed the traditional strength training method, while the third followed a circuit training program. The survey method utilizing the questionnaire was employed in determining current attitudes toward basic course requirements for graduation. Basic courses required for graduation, for all undergraduate degrees at South Dakota State University, are English,, physical education, and speech. Four hundred eighty-six students were selected according to sex, college and class by using the stratified random sample method. Four hundred and three, or 82.92 percent, of those students who received questionnaires returned completed questionnaires. Results of the survey showed that 84.86 percent of the students returning questionnaires felt that there are subject areas where there should be basic course requirements for …

Historically the interest in organic derivatives of selenium has been primarily centered on selenium analogs of sulfur compounds, the selenium analogs of the sulfur-containing amino acids. Experimental studies of the metabo1ism of seleno-organic compounds have been limited to a large extent by their unavailability. Dimethyl selenide is the only organic selenium compound that has been identified as an exhalation product from a laboratory animal injected with an inorganic form of· selenium. The taxonomy of the anaerobic bacteria known as diphtheroids is a subject of study by the Subgroup on Taxonomy of Microaerophilic Actinomycetes, an authorized Subgroup of the Subcommittee on Taxonomy of the Actinomycetales of the International Committee on Nomenclature of Bacteria, International Association of Microbiological Societies. Dr. Gordon Robertstad, a member of this committee, has stimulated a series of studies on these organisms. At present, the species differentiation coupled with genus differentiation among anaerobic diphtheroids is in a state of flux. Tissue culture is a discipline that is now well accepted in the field of plant physiology, but is a rather new technique in the field of plant pathology. Food habits of bigmouth buffalo fry, subadults, and adults were studied in lake Poinsett, South Dakota, from January to November, 1968. Fifty-six fry fed primarily (75.0% by volume) on benthic organisms. Four hundred fifty-five subadults and adults fed entirely on plankton. Daphnia pulex adults comprised 83.7 to 96.7% of the food items during periods of ice cover (January to April). Daphnia pulex adults and juveniles comprised 68.5% by volume and cyclopoid copepods 29.7%^ of the diet from April to July. Summer (July to October) samples showed ingestion of D. pulex adults and juveniles (36.9%), Anacystis sp. (22.3%), and Daphnia galeata …

The purpose of this investigation was to study relevant physiological events prior to and during ammonia toxicity. Blood ammonium-nitrogen (BAN) was utilized to monitor progression and intensity of toxicity. Blood pH, PC02 and P02 were measured to determine effects of ammonia toxicity on acid base balance. Total serum cholesterol was also determined. Steroid hormones and cholesterol can be synthesized from active acetate, according to Oser (1965). It was hoped that any gross changes in steroid concentrations would be reflected in a total serum cholesterol change. Juhasz (1962) found that blood cholesterol increases during starvation paralleled those of blood urea-nitrogen. He …
