Bodies As Vessels: (Re)Production, Consumption, And Female Identity In The Handmaid’S Tale And Dawn, Shelby Clark
Bodies As Vessels: (Re)Production, Consumption, And Female Identity In The Handmaid’S Tale And Dawn, Shelby Clark
Honors Theses
This honors thesis examines how reproduction and food are used to signify power and impact female identity in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid's Tale and Octavia Butler’s Dawn. Both feminist dystopian novels portray societies that secure futurity through the commodification and management of women's domestic labor. The protagonist of each novel, Offred in The Handmaid's Tale and Lilith in Dawn, is responsible for ensuring the survival of humanity through forced reproduction and is additionally expected to produce or manage food. In this thesis, I argue that in both novels, female identity is reclaimed and affirmed as separate from a commodified state …

Double-Crispr Knockout Simulation (Dkosim): A Monte-Carlo Randomization System To Model Cell Growth Behavior And Infer The Optimal Library Design For Growth-Based Double Knockout Screens, Yue Gu, Traver Hart, Luis Leon-Novelo, John Paul Shen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Advances in functional genomic technology, notably CRISPR using Cas9 or Cas12, now allow for large-scale double perturbation screens in which pairs of genes are inactivated, allowing for the experimental detection of genetic interactions (GIs). However, as it is not possible to validate GIs in high-throughput, there is no gold standard dataset where true interactions are known. Hence, we constructed a Double-CRISPR Knockout Simulation (DKOsim), which allows users to reproducibly generate synthetic simulation data where the single gene fitness effect of each gene and the interaction of each gene pair can be specified by the investigator. We adapted Monte-Carlo randomization methods …

Feeling Like A Woman: Interoception And The Objectified Body, Tomi-Ann Roberts, James W. Pennebaker, Benita Jackson
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Much of the interoception literature assumes that people can accurately detect their heart rate, stomach contractility, muscle tension, and other biological cues. This is not true. Instead, interoception is an active integrative psychological process where the feeling of one’s internal state emerges from physiological signals, contextual cues, and the social and cultural experiences of living in a body. Thinking of interoception this way shifts the focus from measuring accuracy at detecting biological signaling to studying lived experience. One such experience is the widespread objectification of women’s bodies. Living in a body that is chronically evaluated creates a particular form of …
Informed Consent In Childbirth: A Global Scoping Review Of Episiotomy Practices And The Gaps In U.S. Perinatal Care, Rachel Gulczinski
Informed Consent In Childbirth: A Global Scoping Review Of Episiotomy Practices And The Gaps In U.S. Perinatal Care, Rachel Gulczinski
Senior Theses
Informed consent is a fundamental ethical and legal component of preoperative and perinatal care and forms the foundation of trust between patients and healthcare providers. Despite this, current evidence suggests that many childbirth interventions, including episiotomies, are often performed without explicit patient consent. Episiotomy remains one of the most commonly cited interventions associated with non-consented care and obstetric violence. Therefore, this global scoping review aimed to evaluate whether informed consent is obtained for episiotomy procedures during childbirth, understand documented experiences of disrespect and unnecessary procedures, and identify differences between international and U.S. practices. This thesis followed the PRISMA Scoping Review …

Increased Backbone Rigidity Of Artificial Transcription Factors, Jasmine Glover, Emma Otey, Joanna K. Kwao, Nicholas Truex
Senior Theses
Programming DNA-binding proteins is an effective strategy for developing therapeutics that regulate gene expression. These proteins can directly bind to DNA to activate or repress transcription of specific genes. Zinc finger proteins are a class of DNA-binding proteins commonly found in eukaryotic organisms. Their DNA-binding function is derived from unique amino acid sequences within each domain that recognizes specific nucleotides, allowing each finger to selectively recognize three DNA base pairs. Adjoining of multiple domains in tandem allows recognition of a specific DNA sequence. Artificial transcription factors can be made of multiple zinc finger domains arranged in tandem and engineered to …

Beyond A Protagonist Bias In Narrative Identity Research: Methods For Identifying Master Narratives In Interview Data, Andrew D. Coppens, Jayson Seaman, Cindy Hartman
Faculty Publications
This article advances a methodological shift in narrative identity research by addressing the field’s protagonist bias – the tendency to rely on first-person autobiographical accounts as the primary evidence for identifying cultural master narratives. We integrate Erikson’s psychosocial identity framework, Vygotsky’s “tool and result” methodological insight, and sociolinguistic approaches to narrative to develop a three-stage analytic logic: (1) identifying small-n narratives through scenes conveyed in discourse; (2) grouping these into Big-N narratives that cohere thematically across scenes (Tannen, 2007, 2008); and (3) assessing candidate master narratives using McLean and Syed’s (2016) five criteria. We demonstrate this approach through a case …

A Review Of Yellow Fever: Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, Clinical Manifestations, Treatment, Prevention, And Prognosis, Farah Ebrahim, Samina Somji, Reena Shah, Salim Surani
Internal Medicine, East Africa
Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV), a member of the Flaviviridae family. Despite the availability of an effective live-attenuated vaccine, the disease remains endemic in regions of Africa and South America. Transmission occurs primarily via an infected mosquito called Aedes aegypti, with distinct urban, sylvatic, and intermediate transmission cycles. Clinically, infection ranges from mild febrile illness to severe disease, which is characterized by jaundice, hemorrhage, and multiorgan failure. Pathogenesis involves viral replication in hepatocytes, immune-mediated injury, and dysregulated inflammatory responses, leading to characteristic hepatic mid-zone necrosis. Diagnosis relies on molecular detection …
Evaluation Of Tick-Derived Peptides For Transmission-Blocking Vaccine Candidates, Madelyn Futral
Evaluation Of Tick-Derived Peptides For Transmission-Blocking Vaccine Candidates, Madelyn Futral
Honors Theses
The lack of effective preventive measures for tick-borne diseases represents a major public health challenge. Transmission-blocking vaccines targeting tick molecules essential for feeding or reproduction could provide a sustainable and broad-spectrum solution. In this study, we evaluated two tick-derived proteins as potential vaccine antigens, subolesin, a key regulator of blood-feeding and cellular processes, and vitellogenin, a protein involved in egg development. Using bioinformatic tools, we identified immunogenic peptide sequences from each protein and chemically conjugated them to virus-like particles (VLPs) to enhance antigen presentation. C57BL/6 mice were immunized intradermally with VLP-peptide conjugates, followed by a booster dose. Blood and spleen …

Catalytic plastic upcycling protocols are essential for resolving the environmental and economic challenges associated with massive plastic production and disposal, as they convert complex waste streams into value-added chemicals. We report an efficient acid-catalyzed upcycling strategy for transforming poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polyoxymethylene (POM) plastic waste. This innovative process directly yielding dioxolanones (DOXs) can be extended to use POM with various naturally abundant α-hydroxy acids. This work significantly expands the high-value chemical portfolio derivable from common plastic wastes. Incorporation of the synthesized DOXs into the poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) backbone results in materials with enhanced thermal stability and superior biodegradability. Critically, …

Illustration has often been dismissed as just a mechanical art, concerned with technique more than intellect. In fact, illustration is a theory of something’s essence, expressed and communicated visually. Craftsmanship – or a playful, mindful lack of it – is always in service to a concept and a purpose. The Masters theses summarized in this book are the result of struggles to give form to more than the tangible world. As writers and visualizers our students picture new meanings and refreshed experiences for the familiar; they define things previously unnamed.

Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common adult primary tumor with a grim median survival time of 14.6 months. It is characterized by rapid progression, diffuse infiltration, and rather poor clinical outcomes. The WHO classifies GBM as a grade 4 diffuse astrocytic tumor with distinctive histopathological features including high mitotic activity, marked cellular atypia, microvascular proliferation, and necrosis. Advances in molecular diagnostics have further classified GMB into IDH-wild type and IDH-mutant subtypes, with important therapeutic and prognostic implications. Key genetic alterations, such as EGFR amplification, PTEN loss, TP53 mutations, TERT promoter mutations, and MGMT methylations, have been identified as contributing to …

Computed Tomography For Four-Dimensional Dose Calculation: Effect Of Detector Array Length, Inhwan Yeo, Qianyi Xu
Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
PURPOSE: Four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) is susceptible to a geometrical error when respiration changes upon patient shift. 4DCT using 16-cm detector arrays, not needing the shift, has been shown to improve geometrical accuracy, compared with a conventional 4DCT (4-cm array), albeit with some Hounsfield unit discrepancies. The 4DCTs were validated for 4D planning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A lung-mimicking phantom containing a spherical target with ten respiratory traces and three tumor-shaped targets with their traces was respectively imaged when, to each of the ten-positions/phases, the lung was moved (1) step-wisely by helical scan at each movement (ground truth; 4DCTGT), …

Human-driven habitat fragmentation is known to disrupt gene flow in a wide range of species. However, its consequences for endemic plant species that depend on specialised invertebrate pollinators remain poorly understood. Although honeybees are capable of travelling considerable distances while foraging, many small-bodied native bee species lack the capacity to expand their foraging ranges or cross anthropogenic barriers, rendering habitat fragmentation the most significant threat to these ecological interactions. In many long-lived plants, the time since fragmentation has not been long enough for detectable changes in the genetic composition of standing populations. Changes in dispersal patterns observed in seedlings may …

AbstractKoalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) give birth to highly altricial young that rely on maternal milk for nutritional support and immune protection in the first year of life. This study applied proteomics to analyse stage-specific shifts in the koala milk proteome across early-, mid-, and late-lactation. Proteins were extracted from seven samples and analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Quantitative profiling identified 874, 1220, and 498 proteins in early-, mid- and late-lactation stages, respectively. The most abundant proteins—including β-lactoglobulin, caseins, clusterin, trichosurin, albumin and lactotransferrin—were consistently detected across all stages, reflecting crucial roles in nutrition, immune function, and detoxification. Protein–protein interaction analyses …

Effects Of Kiwifruit Extract On Apoptosis And Cytokine Production In Inflamed Thp-1-Derived Macrophages, Adrian Cruz, Isbella Brigman
Posters - 2026
White blood cells are essential components of the immune system involved in helping defend the body against infections. Macrophages are a type of white blood cell that play a major role in stimulating and regulating the inflammatory response. Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to infection, injury, or harmful stimuli. Scientific research commonly studies inflammation by exposing immune cells to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Macrophages stimulated with LPS undergo changes in cell processes such as apoptosis which is programmed cell death. Apoptosis is crucial for the immune system that helps eliminate infected or damaged cells to prevent the spread …
The Effects Of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Cards Toxin On M2 Macrophage Polarization And Formation, Ria Modi
The Effects Of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Cards Toxin On M2 Macrophage Polarization And Formation, Ria Modi
Posters - 2026
Macrophages are key cells of the innate immune system, playing essential roles in host defense, tissue homeostasis, and inflammation. Depending on stimuli, macrophages can polarize into distinct functional phenotypes, characterized as classically activated (M1) or alternatively activated (M2) macrophages. M2 macrophages are associated specifically with anti-inflammatory responses, tissue repair, and immune regulation. They contribute to wound healing and can regulate host responses during infection. Community-acquired respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS) toxin, a key virulence factor of Mycoplasma pneumoniae, plays a role in altering host immune responses, but its impact on M2 macrophage function and polarization remains unclear.

BACKGROUND: Activated T-cell pediatric acute liver failure (TC-PALF) is the most common cause of non-acetaminophen PALF, with poor transplant-free survival. Livers in TC-PALF are infiltrated by effector cytotoxic T lymphocytes with markers of tissue-resident memory function (CD8 Trm) and an interferon gamma (IFNγ) transcriptional signature. The PALF-Immune Response Network (PALF-IRN) and the prospective TReatment for ImmUne-Mediated PathopHysiology (TRIUMPH) clinical trial (NCT04862221) aim to characterize the TC-PALF immune pathology and utility of T-cell directed therapy to improve transplant-free survival.
METHODS: TRIUMPH patients with TC-PALF were compared with healthy children and disease controls utilizing multiparameter flow cytometry and 3' single-cell RNA sequencing …

Fungal diseases are an emerging public health threat, yet their epidemiology remains poorly understood due to limited surveillance. Electronic health record (EHR) datasets offer opportunities for studying fungal diseases, but their national representativeness is unclear. We compared inpatient encounters for aspergillosis and histoplasmosis between Oracle EHR Real World Data (OERWD) and the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project National Inpatient Sample (HCUP NIS), a nationally representative discharge-derived database. We analyzed inpatient encounters from both databases and applied calibration weights to OERWD to improve alignment with national benchmarks. Relative differences (RDs) in encounter counts were compared using Wald tests. Survey-weighted quasibinomial models …

Atomoxetine, a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is a nonstimulant alternative to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents. Atomoxetine exposure is highly variable due to cytochrome P450 polymorphism; however, the impact of these genetic variations has not been adequately characterized in the pediatric population. A population pharmacokinetic (PK) model was developed to evaluate steady-state atomoxetine exposures after oral administration in a large, heterogeneous population of children and adolescents with different metabolic phenotypes. Due to the highly variable and complex absorption between subjects and occasions, a two-stage approach was implemented, treating each participant/occasion as a separate individual. First, the individual atomoxetine …

Eurycea latitans (E. latitans) from Honey Creek Cave and unnamed Eurycea species from New Braunfels, Texas (E. sp. 4) are two paedomorphic subterranean species. E. latitans is polymorphic, meaning it also exists as a surface species. Similarities in morphology of subterranean salamander species may be due to convergent evolution as a result of living in similar environments. These similarities include having flatter, wider heads, and wider mouths than surface species (Tovar et al. 2025). Variation may also exist among different subterranean salamander species. Texas Eurycea salamanders display “complex patterns of morphological divergence”, suggesting that isolation and local environmental pressures can …

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate intercellular communication by transferring molecular signals between tissues. Liver-derived EVs contribute to metabolic regulation and have been implicated in tissue cross-talk during health and disease. Skeletal muscle is a highly metabolic tissue that depends on mitochondrial respiration for energy production. However, whether liver-secreted EVs influence myotube mitochondrial function remains unclear. Here, we investigate the impact of liver-derived EVs on myotube mitochondrial respiration.

The Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) is a wild cat native to the boreal forests, mountains and grasslands of Europe and Asia (Bhattacharyya, 2025). The Eurasian lynx keep ungulate populations in check which allow for forests to recover from overgrazing, promoting biodiversity and ecological balance. However, the Eurasian lynx had become locally extinct across Europe by the 1900s due to habitat loss, hunting by farmers in retaliation for predation of livestock and the illegal fur trade. Conservation and ecological restoration efforts to rebuild the lynx population have been underway. Rewilding is a form of ecological restoration involving the reintroduction of a …
