The second decade of the twentieth century brought to American Literature a renaissance in poetry which affected not only the course of American letters b􂨻t also the course of American culture as well. The beginning of this renaissance is marked by the publication of the Lyric Year in 1912 which purported to be a collection of new, fresh, and arresting poems by contemporary poets, both known and obscure. In this volume and into this renaissance appeared the teen-aged Edna St. Vincent Millay with her youthful "Renascence." Although the poem did not win a prize, over which there was an eruption …

The short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda, and the masked shrew, Sorex cinereus, are the two representatives of the shrew family in Brookings County, South Dakota. These mammals, by the very fact that they are insectivores, are potential hosts for a varied fauna of parasites, as insects serve as intermediate hosts for a number of helminths. Although shrews are insectivores, they are omnivorous. An opportunist, the shrew will consume an abundance of any available food. They have been known to feed on a bird's nest (Horvath, 1965) and attack a garter snake (Byle, 1965). Hair from various small mammals was found in …

There has been much research since the tum of the century devoted to the biology of the greenbug (Schizaphis graminum Rond.) and the feeding damage to winter wheat caused by this insect. In recent years a new green bug biotype has emerged that can with stand high temperatures and produces economic damage on sorghum during the late summer months. In 1968, several million acres of grain and forage sorghum were extensive by damaged by the greenbug in the Great Plains states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and South Dakota. The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivating factors that influenced a selected group of men in South Dakota in purchase of clothing. The returns were grouped so that buying practices of men in East River and West River were compared, and buying practices of men from urban and rural areas were compared. Changes in men's clothing have begun to change at an accelerating rate compared with relatively slow changes that took place in the past. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in selected cardiovascular fitness and body measurements of collegiate varsity basketball players during and following a season of training and competition.

The following hypothesis was investigated:
1. There is no significant change throughout a season of competitive varsity basketball in the variables of maximal oxygen uptake, leg strength, leg power, and percent body fat delimitation.

As part of an investigation into the chemistry of molybdenum underway at South Dakota State University it became necessary to investigate the possible existence of the linear dioxomolybdenum (VI) (Moo2 2+) moiety. In order to attain this goal, a planar quadradentate chelate of very limited flexibility was necessary. A chelate which satisfied thiscriterion was phthalocyanine. A literature search revealed no evidence of a molybdenum complex containing the linear dioxomolybdenum (VI) group. While molybdenum phthalocyanine complexes had been reported, chemical and physical evidence to substantiate the formulation was limited and in several instances was contradictory. Studies to determine the effects of dieldrin on social hierarchy of pheasants and chickens were initiated in 1970. Social interactions were observed among groups of pheasant chicks, adult cock and hen pheasants and peck-order development among groups of young pheasants. To determine the effects of dieldrin on the pecking behavior of individual birds, pairs of pheasants and pairs of chickens were placed in a neutral cage. When patterns of dominance and subordination were consistent, dieldrin in capsules (4 mg to pheasants and 6 and 10 mg to chickens twice weekly) was given to one member of each pair and birds …

Three study areas, each containing an aspen (Populus tremuloides) community, a pine (Pinus ponderosa) community, and a mixed aspen-pine community, were studied during the summers of 1968, 1969, and 1970. Soil chemistry, plant chemistry, overstory density, understory production, and use by whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and cattle (Bos taurus) were determined for each community in each study. Pine and aspen communities of one study area were sampled for soil and plant chemistry. Soil phosphate and potassium levels were higher in the aspen community, while soil nitrates were higher in the pine community. Soil pH was similar to the two communities. …

Three levels of encapsulated aldrin (.05, 1.0, and 1.5 mg) were administered weekly to young pen-reared pheasants from 5 to 11 weeks of age to determine effects on growth and residue levels in brain, feathers, and whole body during and after treatment. During treatment, birds were weighed weekly. After treatment ceased, birds were weighed every other week until 21 weeks of ---. Analysis of residues was by electron capture gas chromatography. Growth of pheasants --- 5 to 21 weeks of age was depressed (P 0.01) by administration of aldrin dosages of 1.0 to 1.5 mg. Aldrin values in the brain …

Carp constitutes one of South Dakota's relatively untapped natural resources. Mis-named a trash fish, it represents a largely unappreciated source of high biological protein food. Little research has been developed to date concerning this vigorous and adaptable fresh-water fish. In Asian and European countries the carp has long been cultivated as a desirable food fish. Introduced into the waters of this country however, the carp competed so successfully against game fish that it soon lost favor. Attitudinal differences among farm operators were studied in relation to wetlands, drainage, and waterfowl production within selected sections of four South Dakota counties. The counties involved were Marshall, Day, Codington and Brookings. The interview schedule which was used included personal, social, and economic characteristics of the farm operator and his farm operation. Also included were a series of knowledge and attitude questions pertaining to wetlands, drainage, and waterfowl production. Through the use of a Likert-type scale, the degree of favorableness toward 26 statements in relation to wetlands, drainage, and waterfowl production was recorded. Experiments were conducted in a study of in vitro boar semen storage. Yorkshire boars and Yorkshire-Hampshire crossbred gilts were used and were fed a 16.0% crude protein ration. The sperm-rich fraction of all ejaculates was collected by the gloved-hand technique at a minimum of 48-hr intervals. One experiment involved separating the seminal plasma from the spermatozoa cells within 30min after ejaculation by centrifugation (550 g for 7min) followed by two washings with a glucose-bicarbonate solution. Low protein diets were formulated for experiments with laying hens and turkey poults. The diets were supplemented with equal amounts of protein and different feedstuffs while maintaining equal calculated levels of selected amino acids. Single trails were also reported for factorially applied amino acid supplements to turkey starter and cage-layer diets. The three-year studies indicated that a typical corn-soy layer diet diluted with glucose monohydrate to 9.4 percent protein was deficient in methionine, lysine and tryptophan. Attempts to further improve the rate of egg production by additional supplements of arginine, isoleucine, valine, or diammonium citrate were not successful. The low …

Part 1: An intermediate species in the Arbuzov ring opening of bicyclic phosphites was discovered. Addition of chlorine or bromine to l-alkyl-4-phospha-3, 5, 8-trioxabicyclo(2. 2.2) and octane at low temperatures produced a solid P, P-dihalo phosphonium intermediate which ring-opened at room temperature to form the 5-alkyl-5-halomethyl-2-halo-2-oxo-1, 3, 2-dioxaphosphorinan. The intermediate was found to deoxygenate alcohols, ethers, aldehydes and ketones to produce the bicyclic phosphate and the various alkyl halides. The intermediate also cleaved acids and esters to form the acyl halides. The mechanism of the deoxygenation reaction was proposed to involve a type of S_Ni pathway that included …

Gout is one of the earliest disease entities to be described in medical writings. Hippocrates noted familial distribution patterns and described its classic symptomatology in the 5th century B.C. Empirical treatment employing colchicine was advocated by Alexander of Tralles in the 5^th century A.D. A better understanding of the complex association between clinical manifestations of gout and uric acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism has made rational treatment possible only very recently. Ample experimental and clinical data now available show a definite association between disorders of purine metabolism resulting in hyperuricemia and frequent concomitant hyperlipidemia.
