Normalized Difference Vegetative Index-Related Assessment For Climate Change Impact On Indigenous Communities From High Resolution Ikonos Satellite Imagery In West Papua, C Lavers, T Mason, J Mazower Jul 2021

Normalized Difference Vegetative Index-Related Assessment For Climate Change Impact On Indigenous Communities From High Resolution Ikonos Satellite Imagery In West Papua, C Lavers, T Mason, J Mazower

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

High-resolution satellite imagery permits acquisition of critical data to observe climate-change and environmental impact on conflict-impacted indigenous communities with co-existing socio-economic factors, often within unstable regimes. Conflict may prevent direct access in remote regions to validate civilian conflict actor evidence. In such cases use of remote sensing tools, techniques, and data are extremely important. Software-based imagery assessment can quantify radiometrically calibrated or Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and provide temporal changes with rapid detection over large search areas. In this work we evaluate recent trends in equatorial alpine glacier ablation to address the probability of indigenous water scarcity, as pure …

Usability Of Sentinel-3 Satellite Ocean Colour Data For Examination And Chlorophyll Gradient Classification Of Submesoscale Island Wake Formations, Emmanuelle Simone Farrington

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Submesoscale turbulent formations present challenges to sampling efforts due to their scale and transient nature. The development of successful sampling methods is imperative to achieving an understanding of the biological and ecological implications of these turbulent formations. This study assesses the viability of using Sentinel-3 OLCI multispectral satellite data for the study of submesoscale island wake formations. This research subsequently samples the eddies and filaments with virtual transects of satellite chlorophyll products, calculates metrics such as formation gradient and FWHM, identifies key environmental drivers of wake characteristics, and presents a novel framework by which to classify these formations. The study …

Habitat Modelling Of The Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena Phocoena) In Southwest Uk: Effects Of Depth, Slope And Tidal State, Jade L. Buttifant

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The harbour porpoise, Phocoena phocoena, is a widespread cetacean species in the Northeast Atlantic, with a year-round distribution around the UK. The south-west experiences the highest bycatch rates in the UK and is the main threat to P. phocoena populations. Yet here there is limited information on their abundance, distribution, and habitat preferences. This study aims to understand harbour porpoise species-habitat relationship in the UK south-west, which may be used to inform conservation management and sustain valuable populations. From boat-based visual surveys conducted over summers 2017-2019 from Plymouth to St Marys in the Scilly Isles, habitat modelling using generalised additive …

Working Memory Modules On The Threshold To Consciousness, Antonio Martin Jul 2021

Working Memory Modules On The Threshold To Consciousness, Antonio Martin

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Current literature is claiming for an important relationship between conscious experiencing and executive functions (mainly working memory). Since there is still a lack of empirical evidence relating those mental processes, the aim of this research is to continue exploring those relations by finding out how different components of working memory may affect the threshold to consciousness. The experiment contained three groups of people who performed two concurrent computerized tasks. The first one consisted of a replication of a priming and subjective visibility task (de Loof et al., 2013) for all the groups. Both experimental groups differed from the control group …

Does A Mindfulness Intervention Have A Significant Effect On Preference For Intrinsic Or Extrinsic Benefits Of Environmentally Friendly Behaviours?, Annabelle Violet Lobb Jul 2021

Does A Mindfulness Intervention Have A Significant Effect On Preference For Intrinsic Or Extrinsic Benefits Of Environmentally Friendly Behaviours?, Annabelle Violet Lobb

The Plymouth Student Scientist

There is an increased interest in encouraging the public to regularly demonstrate environmentally friendly behaviours. Previous research has suggested that these behaviours can be sustained for longer if the individual is intrinsically motivated rather than extrinsically motivated. People who feel a high connection to nature are more likely to demonstrate environmentally friendly behaviour; this can be measured both explicitly and implicitly. It is important to cultivate a high implicit connection to nature because implicit attitudes have an underlying influence on performing environmentally friendly behaviours that are not deliberately thought about. Mindfulness can be used by individuals with a low connection …

The Use Of Novel Lung Alveolar Macrophage Model, Max Planck Institute Cells, To Demonstrate The Differential Effects Of Smooth And Rough Mycobacterium Abscessus Forms On Il-6 And Il-1b Induction, Thanthri Peiris

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Mycobacterium abscessus frequently initiates respiratory infections in humans and is of clinical concern in patients with cystic fibrosis who develop secondary pulmonary infections. Alveolar macrophages and innate responses play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of M. abscessus. The virulence potential of M. abscessus was suggestive of cell surface transition of glycopeptidolipid loss from the smooth biofilm producing strain to transform into the rough invasive variant. This study focuses on innate responses of three strains of M. abscessus; NCTC rough morphotype, CL-B (DC088-B) smooth morphotype and CL-C (DC088-C) mixed morphotype; each isolated and used as heat and formalin killed stimulants. …

A Qualitative Investigation Of Media Framing Regarding Christopher Jefferies In The Case Of Joanna Yeates' Murder, Laura Collins

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Framing describes the process of how things are constructed and perceived through communication. Media framing refers to how things are presented when relaying information to others. Many framing techniques are used to frame news stories to influence readers, and this study explored the case of Christopher Jefferies, who was portrayed in the media as being guilty of murder, despite being innocent. This research aimed to detect what media framing techniques were used, what was focused on to sway opinions and explore why Christopher Jefferies was targeted. It looked at how the media were able to convince people of his guilt …

Can You Hear It? Identifying The Priority And Function Of Overlapping Auditory Medical Alarms, Cassie Parker Jul 2021

Can You Hear It? Identifying The Priority And Function Of Overlapping Auditory Medical Alarms, Cassie Parker

The Plymouth Student Scientist

This paper presents an experimental study that exhibits the differences seen between the recognition of high and moderate priority auditory alarms when played simultaneously. Past research has demonstrated that the current IEC-60601-1-8 alarms used in clinical settings are challenging to identify and learn, and that newly developed auditory icons are easier to discriminate. The current research compares these two types of alarms and measures participant ability to recognise both the function and priority of single sounding and combination sounding alarms. Participants were either assigned to listen to IEC alarms or auditory icons and had to determine the function and priority …

Mathematical Constraints And Their Philosophical Impact, Adam Stiles Jul 2021

Mathematical Constraints And Their Philosophical Impact, Adam Stiles

The Plymouth Student Scientist

This paper investigates some of the constraints encountered in mathematics. It proves the incompleteness theorems. It investigates or discusses theorem proving procedures, complexity, undecidability, undefinability, and covers some examples of independent formulas. This paper should give any person with an interest in philosophy sufficient understanding to discuss mathematical philosophy with mathematicians.

Acute Stress, Friend Or Foe: An Investigation Of Free Recall Ability For Incongruent Items When Placed Under Acute Psychological Stress, Anna Adkins Jul 2021

Acute Stress, Friend Or Foe: An Investigation Of Free Recall Ability For Incongruent Items When Placed Under Acute Psychological Stress, Anna Adkins

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Experiencing stress during a working week is typical for most of the population, but the effects of acute stress on individuals is less clear cut, particularly in relation to memory ability. Research suggests that acute psychological stress can enhance memory ability, due to increased neuroplasticity following stress and stress hormones diverting attention to information congruent to the stressful environment. The current research investigated the effects of stress on free recall ability when the stimuli are incongruent to the stressor. Forty-four Psychology undergraduates were exposed to both a stress condition (Modified Trier Social Stress Test- free speech on Social Psychology) and …

Negative Emotional Appeals: The Effectiveness Of Fear And Guilt Communicative Appeals On Individuals Pro-Environmental Behaviour And Environmental Concern To Microplastic Pollution, Gavin Miller Jul 2021

Negative Emotional Appeals: The Effectiveness Of Fear And Guilt Communicative Appeals On Individuals Pro-Environmental Behaviour And Environmental Concern To Microplastic Pollution, Gavin Miller

The Plymouth Student Scientist

In an ever-growing ‘throwaway’ society, the world’s oceans are coming under new and persistent pressures from anthropogenic activity. Marine plastic pollution is caused exclusively by human behaviours and decisions. Plastics, which accumulate in the ocean and degrade into brittle and ever-smaller fragments called ‘microplastics’, have the potential to compromise human food security and have been found in a range of items for human consumption. Microplastics also enter the marine environment directly as a result of human activity; Napper and Thompson (2016) demonstrated that as many as 700,000 microplastic fibres can enter waterways every laundry cycle. Despite this however, general microplastic …

Such devices include peristaltic pumps, switching valves, six-port valves and solenoid valves. The system is simple to configure by using a bespoke web-based interface to configure and control an STM32 ARM microcontroller. The routine can …

Fighting Plastic Pollution: An Investigation Into Whether The Presence Or Absence Of Single-Use Plastic Impacts Our Impression Of Others, Jennifer Spencer Jul 2021

Fighting Plastic Pollution: An Investigation Into Whether The Presence Or Absence Of Single-Use Plastic Impacts Our Impression Of Others, Jennifer Spencer

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The evidence is clear that plastic pollution is a huge problem threatening the survival of the modern world. Psychological researchers have risen to the challenge to investigate people's behaviours, attitudes and perceptions around environmentalism. One area of psychology that has been scarcely researched in regard to environmentalism is impression formation. People form impressions of others based on a number of factors, but one of these is their conformance to norms. We wanted to investigate if the use of reusable plastics had become a norm for the university population, and whether failing to comply to this norm would result in negative …

An Investigation Into The Determination Of Ammonium In Mine Bioleaching Solutions Utilising An Ammonia Gas Electrode, Daniel Rogers Jul 2021

An Investigation Into The Determination Of Ammonium In Mine Bioleaching Solutions Utilising An Ammonia Gas Electrode, Daniel Rogers

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Fixed nitrogen is an essential nutrient for bacteria used in the mining industry to solubilise metals from their associated ores in a process known as bioleaching. Most bacteria are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen, but those which are not require a feed solution of aqueous ammonium to meet their nitrogen requirements. Bioleaching operations are large scale and therefore the cost associated with providing aqueous nitrogen is considerable. It is therefore important that only the minimum amount of aqueous nitrogen is added during the process to minimise costs. Camborne School of Mines were investigating the potential loss of aqueous nitrogen from …

Does Social Connectedness Increase Pro-Environmental Behaviour?, Millie Clark Jul 2021

Does Social Connectedness Increase Pro-Environmental Behaviour?, Millie Clark

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Extensive research has shown that pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) is encouraged by nature connectedness. Recently, however, researchers have investigated the effects of connectedness to others on socially responsible behaviours. It has been found that a higher sense of connectedness to others increases one’s socially responsible behaviour. A similar construct, known as social connectedness, has been implemented in prosocial behaviours and motivation, yet has not been investigated in terms of PEB. The present study investigated the effects of situational and trait social connectedness on PEB, using self-report and the novel Pro-Environmental Behaviour Task to measure PEB. 90 participants were randomly assigned to …
