The Effect Of Chlorhexidine Mouthwash Vs Propolis Mouthwash On The Nitrate-Reducing Activity Of Oral Bacteria And Vascular Control In Healthy Individuals, Stephanie Ellis
The Effect Of Chlorhexidine Mouthwash Vs Propolis Mouthwash On The Nitrate-Reducing Activity Of Oral Bacteria And Vascular Control In Healthy Individuals, Stephanie Ellis
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Nitrate and nitrite molecules are involved in the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous vasodilatory molecule, via the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Oral bacteria are responsible for the reduction of nitrate to nitrite making them important regulators in NO production and vascular control. This paper aimed to investigate whether a laboratory-made propolis mouthwash maintained the oral nitrate reducing capacity (ONRC) of commensal bacteria compared with a chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash and the effects of this on vascular function in healthy individuals. Twenty-eight healthy participants visited the laboratory on two occasions where anthropometric, ONRC, blood pressure and vascular function data were collected. Between …

The Role Of Social Connectedness In Pro-Environmental Behaviours At A Trait And Situational Level, Bethany Pinnell
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This study investigated the effect of trait and situational social connectedness on participants pro-environmental behaviours (PEB). There were 90 participants split equally into two conditions, a socially included condition, used to create the feeling of social connection, and a socially excluded condition. Participants started by completing a social connectedness scale (SCS) to measure their feeling of trait social connectedness in everyday life. They then played the cyberball game on the computer which they were told was against two other participants, however it just virtual characters. In the Cyberball game participants were either included or excluded. After this they did a …

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused (and continues to cause) severe disruption in global and local economies and has forced countries, societies, and individuals to adapt quickly to the unprecedented and unpredictable situations. Despite the obvious negative consequences of the pandemic, many have called for efforts to identify transformative opportunities for sustainable development throughout this disorderly time. In the present paper, we explore such potential opportunities in the context of an interdisciplinary, international research project, which is focusing on sustainable marine management in biosphere reserves and marine parks in Southeast Asia. During a virtual workshop conducted as part of the GCRF …

Differentiation Of South African Coastal Rock Pool Ochthebius Is Associated With Major Ocean Currents (Coleoptera: Hydraenidae), David T. Bilton
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
A number of non-marine coastal invertebrate species have been found to constitute (semi-) cryptic species complexes in recent years. Here it is revealed that rather than a single widespread species, distributed from the Namibian border to the Cape south coast, South African coastal rock pool Ochthebius Leach, 1815 previously referred to Ochthebius capicola (Péringuey, 1892) comprise two distinct taxa. Ochthebius capicola (s. str.) is apparently restricted to the Benguela Ecoregion on the west coast, being replaced by Ochthebius mlamboi sp. nov., in south and east coast localities influenced by the Agulhas Current, including areas of the Eastern Cape province well …

Eye Movement Desensitisation And Reprocessing Therapy For People With Intellectual Disability In The Treatment Of Emotional Trauma And Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Scoping Review, An Smith, R Laugharne, K Oak, R Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Introduction: Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) are at significant risk of developing emotional trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to altered neuropsychological functioning, increased chance of experiencing adverse life events, difficulty expressing emotions, diagnostic overshadowing and institutional failures. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is efficacious in the general population, but research lacks evidence to suggest EMDR remains effective in ID. This paper assesses the evidence available on the use of EMDR to treat PTSD in ID and provide direction for future research. Methods: A scoping review using PRISMA guidance was conducted. PsychInfo, Embase and Medline were completed …

Tourists are easy targets for terrorists. Drawing on the example of the 2015 Sousse(Tunisia) shootings, and using a conceptual framework informed by tourist security, terrorism risk management including terrorism risk assessment, communication and due care, we analyse the management of the terror induced security risks, and the factors influencing this process. This is achieved through a firstin-the field tourism study that applies narrative analysis to legal discourse. We show tourist security was compromised by a lack of terrorism risk communication, poor policing, and limited integration of counter-terrorism strategies (e.g.inadequate implementation of environmental mitigation). Implications for terrorism risk assessment, management and …

Judging Me And You: Task Design Modulates Self-Prioritization, M Golubickis, Cn Macrae
Judging Me And You: Task Design Modulates Self-Prioritization, M Golubickis, Cn Macrae
School of Psychology
An extensive literature has revealed the benefits of self-relevance during stimulus processing. Compared to material associated with other persons (e.g., friend, mother), self-relevant information elicits faster and more accurate responses (i.e., the self-prioritization effect). Probing the boundary conditions of this effect, recent research has sought to identify whether the advantages of self-relevance can be attenuated (or even eliminated) under certain circumstances. Continuing in this tradition, here we explored the extent to which basic aspects of the task design modulate self-prioritization. The results of two experiments demonstrated just such an effect. During both simultaneous (i.e., Expt. 1) and sequential (i.e., Expt. …

Effects Of Vegetation, Sediment Supply And Sea Level Rise On The Morphodynamic Evolution Of Tidal Channels, A Sgarabotto, A D'Alpaos, S Lanzoni
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Tidal channels play a leading role in the morphodynamic evolution of tidal environments by driving the exchange of water, sediments, and nutrients within these systems. Despite their fundamental function on landscape construction, current knowledge on their plano‐altimetric evolution in response to environmental forcing is still limited. We developed a mathematical model to address the interplay of biogeomorphic processes on the plano‐altimetric equilibrium of a straight tidal channel flanked by adjacent intertidal platforms. The model couples a one‐dimensional hydrodynamic model with a bed evolution model. The former describes the flow field within the channel and the storage contribution of lateral shoals. …
Scramble: Sweep Comparison Research Application For Multiple Back-Gated Field Effect Measurements Of Graphene Field Effect Transistors, B O’Driscoll
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Graphene Field Effect Transistors (GFETs) are active electronic components which exploit the modulation of charge carriers in a graphene channel for a wide variety of applications such as electronic switching, amplification and biosensing. Herein describes a new software package SCRAMBLE, written in Python and developed with a graphical user interface, to speed up the routine processing of multiple back-gated electrical measurements from GFETs. For forward and reverse sweeps, SCRAMBLE automatically determines the Dirac points, positions of maximum transconductance and calculates the field effect mobilities for electrons and holes.

Abstract Background Realist approaches and Normalization Process Theory (NPT) have both gained significant traction in implementation research over the past 10 years. The aim of this study was therefore to explore how the approaches are combined to understand problems of implementation, to determine the degree of complementarity of the two approaches and to provide practical approaches for using them together. Methods Systematic review of research studies combining Realist and NPT approaches. Realist methodology is concerned with understanding and explaining causation, that is, how and why policies, programmes and interventions achieve their effects. NPT is a theory of implementation that explains …
