Study Protocol For A Randomised Controlled Trial Assessing The Impact Of Pulmonary Rehabilitation On Maximal Exercise Capacity For Adults Living With Post-Tb Lung Disease: Global Recharge Uganda, W Katagira, Mw Orme, Av Jones, R Kasiita, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Introduction The burden of post-tuberculosis (TB) lung disease (PTBLD) is steadily increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, causing disability among TB survivors. Without effective medicines, the mainstay of PTBLD treatment evolves around disease prevention and supportive treatment. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), a low-cost, non-pharmacological intervention has shown effectiveness in a group of PTBLD individuals but has not been tested in a clinical trial. This study aims to assess the impact of a 6-week PR programme on maximal exercise capacity and other outcomes among adults in Uganda living with PTBLD. Methods and analysis This is a randomised waiting-list controlled trial with blinded outcome measures, …

Dear Editor, Engaging relatives in the care of critically ill patients is associated with better outcomes. This reflects the importance of family-centred care (FCC) to deliver high-quality care in intensive care units (ICUs) [1]. Restricted visiting in ICU during COVID-19 pandemic has left family members unable to visit their loved ones [2, 3]. In our cross-sectional study, designed to validate the EMpowerment of PAtients in THe Intensive Care-Family (EMPATHIC-F) questionnaire, we collected data in two Spanish ICUs between November 2019 and May 2020 [4]. Here we report a secondary analysis demonstrating the impact of restricted visiting policies during COVID-19 on …

'Peace Throughout The Oceans And Seas Of The World': British Maritime Strategic Thought And World Order, 1892-1919, Louis Halewood
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Prior to 1914, British strategic thinkers considered the question of how to maintain British world power in the twentieth century. They developed visions of co-operation at sea between not only Britain and the Dominions, but also other states in the international system. During the First World War, these ideas merged with plans for the League of Nations, which British policymakers envisaged as a tool for enforcing peace through the use of sea power. This article explores these ideas, providing a different interpretation of the origins of the League, and the maritime strategic thought of key individuals including Halford Mackinder.

Comparing Person And People Perception: Multiple Group Members Do Not Increase Stereotype Priming, Lm Persson, M Golubickis, D Dublas, N Mastnak, Et Al
School of Psychology
A characteristic feature of daily life is encountering people in groups. Surprisingly, however, at least during the initial stages of processing, research has focused almost exclusively on the construal of single individuals. As such, it remains unclear whether person and people (i.e., group) perception yield comparable or divergent outcomes. Addressing this issue, here we explored a core social-cognitive topic—stereotype activation—by presenting both single and multiple facial primes in a sequential-priming task. In addition, the processes underlying task performance were probed using a drift diffusion model analysis. Based on prior work, it was hypothesised that multiple (vs. single) primes would increase …

Soil resources in East Africa are being rapidly depleted by erosion, threatening food, water and livelihood security in the region. Here we demonstrate how the integration of evidence from natural and social sciences has supported a community-led change in land management in an agro-pastoral community in northern Tanzania. Geospatial analysis of erosion risk and extent (based on a drone survey across a 3.6 km2 sub-catchment) revealed that recently converted land had ca 12-times greater rill density than established slow-forming terraced plots (987 ± 840 m2 ha−1 vs. 79 ± 110 m2 ha−1). Recently, there has been a resurgent interest in the exploration of deep-sea mineral deposits, particularly polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), central Pacific. Accurate environmental impact assessment is critical to the effective management of a new industry and depends on a sound understanding of species taxonomy, biogeography, and connectivity across a range of scales. Connectivity is a particularly important parameter in determining ecosystem resilience, as it helps to define the ability of a system to recover post-impact. Scavenging amphipods in the superfamilies Alicelloidea Lowry and De Broyer, 2008 and Lysianassoidea Dana, 1849 contribute to a unique and abundant scavenging …

BackgroundCilia are dynamic cellular extensions that generate and sense signals to orchestrate proper development and tissue homeostasis. They rely on the underlying polarisation of cells to participate in signalling. Cilia dysfunction is a well-known cause of several diseases that affect multiple organ systems including the kidneys, brain, heart, respiratory tract, skeleton and retina.MethodsAmong individuals from four unrelated families, we identified variants in discs large 5 (DLG5) that manifested in a variety of pathologies. In our proband, we also examined patient tissues. We depleted dlg5 in Xenopus tropicalis frog embryos to generate a loss-of-function model. Finally, we tested the pathogenicity of …

Predictability Of Sinusoidally Moving Stimuli Does Not Improve The Accuracy Of The Accommodative Response, Ajd Águila-Carrasco, I Marín-Franch
School of Health Professions
Previous research work suggests that predictable target motion such as sinusoidal movement can be anticipated by the visual system, thereby improving the accommodative response. The validity of predictable motion for studying human dynamic accommodation is sometimes put into question. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of anticipation along with learning (and motivation, etc.) and fatigue (and boredom, loss of attention, etc.) on dynamic accommodation experiments from a practical perspective. Specifically, changes in amplitude and temporal phase lag were estimated within and between trials as 9 adult observers were instructed to focus on a stimulus that oscillated …

In the domain of soft tensegrity robot, the self-equilibrium tensegrity structure is vital for the further analysis of robot's locomotion. Furthermore, form-finding is an important step for finding a self-equilibrium tensegrity structure. In this paper, a conjugate gradient form-finding (CGFF) algorithm is developed and investigated for the form-finding problems of tensegrity systems. Besides, a Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient method is employed to solve the nonlinear unconstrained optimization problems which transformed from the form-finding problems. Moreover, the initial conditions of the tensegrity structure such as the axial stiffness and rest lengths of the element have been utilized to explore the configuration details …
