The Smithsons At Robin Hood, John Furse
The Smithsons At Robin Hood, John Furse
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis The Smithsons at Robin Hood can be seen as a logical continuation of This Was Tomorrow, in that it deals specifically with that tomorrow: the culmination of the Smithsons' thinking, on the problem of mass working-class housing, in the built form of Robin Hood Gardens, Poplar, London E.14., completed in 1972. It is the purpose of this thesis to argue that the Smithsons' intentions were indeed a dream, and that Robin Hood is an ideological fragment of that dream. The building is, as Johnson suggests: 'very far from being just another block of council flats', equally it is …
The Management Of Reconstruction With Particular Reference To The House Building Programme 1942-9, Stephen Edward Gilliatt
The Management Of Reconstruction With Particular Reference To The House Building Programme 1942-9, Stephen Edward Gilliatt
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Despite extensive writing on Social Democracy in Britain, largely in the form of histories of the Labour Party and marxist state theory, few studies have undertaken, in depth, an empirical analysis of a particular period of social democracy as government, and even fewer using the extensive documentation available in the Public Archives. Theories of the role of the state and those that manage it are often based on abstract, essentially deductive reasoning and over-influenced by a hostile attitude to their object of analysis. Such approaches have resulted in a neglect of the scope for discretionary behaviour in the management of …
Causal Attribution And Depression, Atmane Ikhlef
Causal Attribution And Depression, Atmane Ikhlef
School of Psychology Theses
This thesis reports a series of experiments conducted to elucidate the nature of the relationship between attribution and depression. After an extended review of the literature on attribution and depression it was concluded that further research is needed to evaluate the aetiological importance of depressogenic attributions, and also to elucidate the nature of the relationship they may entertain with depression. A series of experiments and studies were performed to address these and other issues. In experiments l-3 subjects' attributions for success and failure were manipulated and their effects on subsequent mood, expectations and psychomotor performance were assessed. The results showed …
Maintenance Requirements For Lightly Trafficked Roads, Ian C. Butler
Maintenance Requirements For Lightly Trafficked Roads, Ian C. Butler
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
A flexible pavement evaluation and overlay design procedure has been developed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) . The majority of the information used to derive the relationships contained in this procedure was collected on medium and heavily trafficked roads. Very little performance data existed prior to the start of this project for lightly trafficked roads, with the result that the relationships in the above procedure had to be extrapolated at the lower traffic levels. This investigation has resulted in the setting up of a large data base containing pavement condition, construction and strength information. A new methodology …
Structural Properties Of Matrix Fraction Descriptions And Applications In Linear Systems, Pauleen Ann Ratcliffe
Structural Properties Of Matrix Fraction Descriptions And Applications In Linear Systems, Pauleen Ann Ratcliffe
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The finite pole s and zeros of a rational matrix G(s) are defined to be the zeros of the polynomial denominator and numerator matrices respectively taken from any relatively prime matrix fraction description of G(s). The infinite poles and zeros of G(s) are then defined as the poles and zeros at w = O of G (1/w). This new definition is the central result of the thesis. From it various results for the theory of rational matrices are derived, many of which are analagous to results in the complex variable theory of rational functions. The infinite pole s and zeros …
An Investigation Of The Contingent Negative Variation Using Signal Processing Methods, Martin John Nichols
An Investigation Of The Contingent Negative Variation Using Signal Processing Methods, Martin John Nichols
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) is one of many types of electrical response signals which appear in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of man subsequent to one or more stimuli. Generally these responses are small in comparison to the normal background EEG and had always been thought to consist of a response component which was added to the background EEG. Professor B. McA. Sayers of Imperial College suggested that the auditory response might actually be due to a temporary ordering of the phases of the components of the background EEG. A model, allowing for additive and ordering effects, is proposed here. This …
A Study Of The Structure, Distribution And Function Of Phagocytic Cells In The Immune System Of Fish, Nicole Parish
A Study Of The Structure, Distribution And Function Of Phagocytic Cells In The Immune System Of Fish, Nicole Parish
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Dogfish leucocytes were characterised by histochemistry, light and electron microscopical methods and qualitative phagocytic studies. This enabled the recognition of the major phagocytic cells and their role in the immune response of the fish was further evaluated. In addition to in vitro and in vivo studies of phagocytosis, the phagocytic cells were examined for certain surface properties such as the presence of Fe and C3 receptors. Attempts were also made to demonstrate delayed hypersensitivity by in VIVO skin tests and in vitro migration inhibition tests. All the major leucocytic elements found in mammals were demonstrated in dogfish blood together with …
Studies On The Structure And Function Of The Teleost Pseudobranch, Derek L. Mattey
Studies On The Structure And Function Of The Teleost Pseudobranch, Derek L. Mattey
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Four main types of pseudobranch were distinguished on the basis of their epithelial covering. The terms 'free', ‘semi-free’, 'covered' and 'buried' are used to describe these types. All pseudobranchs possess specific ‘pseudobranch type’ cells, characterised by an orderly arrangement of tubules around closely packed mitochondria. They also contain vacuoles which may play a role in osmoreception by causing changes in the size and shape of the cells. Another specialised cell type, similar to the gill 'chloride' cell was found in 'free' and 'semi-free' pseudobranchs of salt water fish. They are associated with smaller 'accessory' cells from which they are separated …
Structural Stability Of Unidirectional Cfrp Thin-Walled Open-Section Columns, David John Lee
Structural Stability Of Unidirectional Cfrp Thin-Walled Open-Section Columns, David John Lee
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Theoretical and experimental investigations into the compressive buckling behaviour of unidirectional CFRP thin- walled channel sections subject to built-in end conditions are described. Local and overall modes of instability are considered and the effects of transverse shear on both modes are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the development of local instability theory for orthotropic materials and the basis for design charts for a range of thin-walled orthotropic sections is included. These analytical developments are accompanied by an investigation of numerical methods in which a finite difference technique is applied to single orthotropic plates and a finite element programme is …
Simulation Of A Multiprocessor Computer System, A.M. Salih
Simulation Of A Multiprocessor Computer System, A.M. Salih
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The introduction of computers and software engineering in telephone switching systems has dictated the need for powerful design aids for such complex systems. Among these design aids simulators - real-time environment simulators and flat-level simulators - have been found particularly useful in stored program controlled switching systems design and evaluation. However, both types of simulators suffer from certain disadvantages. An alternative methodology to the simulation of stored program controlled switching systems is proposed in this research. The methodology is based on the development of a process-based multilevel hierarchically structured software simulator. This methodology eliminates the disadvantages of environment and flat-level …
The Biology Of Marine Myxosporida And An Investigation Into The Effects Of These Parasites On Teleosts, Charles Nigel Tomlinson
The Biology Of Marine Myxosporida And An Investigation Into The Effects Of These Parasites On Teleosts, Charles Nigel Tomlinson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
A survey of Myxosporidia in teleosts from the South-Western. coast of England demonstrated the widespread occurrence of these parasites. Infection in selected fish species was related to age, sex and seasonal migration of the host. Structural studies of Myxobolus exiguus and Myxidium incurvatum were undertaken in order to investigate sporogenesis, parasite development and the host-parasite interface. Of particular note was the intimate association between parasite and host cells, the structure of the surface layers in Myxobolus exiguus and Myxidium incurvatum, and the occurrence of epithelioid cells in developmental stages of Myxobolus exiguus. Myxobolus exiguus was transmitted experimentally in mullet, and …
The Atomisation And Determination Of Volatile Metals In Coal, John Robert Wilkinson
The Atomisation And Determination Of Volatile Metals In Coal, John Robert Wilkinson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The analytical advantages of some novel approaches to atomisation using gaseous sample transport and slurry nebulization have been investigated and applied to the determination of trace metals in coal. A cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectroscopic method for the determination of mercury using a gas-sheathed atom cell and front surface illumination was developed. With a manual injection technique the detection limit was 0.01 ng. Replacement with a continuous flow system yielded a more rapid and precise method with a detection limit of C.045 ng.ml-¹. Quantitative recoveries of mercury from a standard coal were obtained through liberation of the analyte using nonoxidative …

Biochemical Studies Of Human Hyperuricaemia, Trevor Rupert Hardwell
Biochemical Studies Of Human Hyperuricaemia, Trevor Rupert Hardwell
Other Faculty of Health Theses
Some of the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of uric acid have been investigated in two groups of patients: hyperuricaemic and gouty individuals. A group of normal controls has been used for comparison. Human erythrocyte phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (2.7.6.1.) was found to be much more stable in all samples than has been reported. Kinetic parameters for this enzyme, using a modified assay, were identical in individuals from the three clinical groups. Inhibition studies using a range of inhibitors of widely differing chemical structure showed uniformity in characteristics amongst gouty or healthy individuals. Some inhibitors revealed possible genetic variants of the enzyme …
A Study Of Social Work With Families Which Have A Handicapped Child, Gillian M . L . Lonsdale
A Study Of Social Work With Families Which Have A Handicapped Child, Gillian M . L . Lonsdale
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
This thesis represents an attempt to understand something of the many and varied needs of families which have a handicapped child and to explore possible ways in which those needs might be met, considering, in particular, the contribution of social work. Throughout, in making assessments and valuations of professional performance, it draws extensively upon the parent or the consumer viewpoint. The research project falls into three parts. The first stage is an exploration of the current situation. Details of all the families in Plymouth City which had a handicapped child were card indexed and then an approximate quarter sample was …
Ship Based Weather Routeing (Using Dynamical Meteorology), Roger Motte
Ship Based Weather Routeing (Using Dynamical Meteorology), Roger Motte
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The relevance of ship based routeing is discussed. Data collected at sea are analysed to produce vessel response characteristics Meteorological data are analysed in a conventional manner to establish effective steering criteria with respect to 500 mb flow. For the first time a routeing model is formulated which recognises the three spatial dimensions of a middle latitude storm. A theoretical analysis of relative flow in a growing baroclinic wave is undertaken. Reference to displacement of the wave trough affords a measure of both storm development and steering effectiveness. Short, medium and long term planning elements are combined in a model. …
Pathogenicity Of Vibrio Anguillarum In Fish, Henrik Chart
Pathogenicity Of Vibrio Anguillarum In Fish, Henrik Chart
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
This dissertation. reports the first detailed study of the possible pathogenic mechanisms and virulence determinants of the fish pathogen V. anguillarum carried out in association with histo-pathological studies using electron microscopy and electrocardiography In addition, possible infection route (s) were investigated and the effect of environmental variables on pathogenesis examined. Pathogenicity was found to be species specific with strains which were avirulent in eels being highly virulent in grey mullet. Following injection of virulent bacteria into eels all tissues were rapidly colonised, death being characterised by severe haemorrhagic septicaemia. In contrast, avirulent strains were rapidly eliminated from the eel host …
Computer Modelling Of Marine Traffic Behaviour, Paul Vernon Davis
Computer Modelling Of Marine Traffic Behaviour, Paul Vernon Davis
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The increase in marine traffic has resulted in the need for traffic routing schemes in areas of high vessel density. In order to assess the viability of a scheme before it is brought into use a simulation study can be used. This thesis describes the construction of a computer model to simulate the behaviour of mariners using the concepts of domains and arenas to control their actions. The arena is an area around a ship where one navigator takes account of another ship's presence. The domain is the area around his ship which a navigator wishes to keep clear of …
Some Psychological Dynamics Of Obesity In Childhood: The Relationships Among Anxious Attachment, Impaired Self-Identity, And Body Image, Kay Regina
School of Psychology Theses
The psychological dynamics of obesity in children were studied from the viewpoint of Bowlby's (1969; 1973) attachment theory. Literature was reviewed which reported a lack of self-differentiation in the obese which is consistent with anxious attachment. Under differentiation causes conceptual confusion about bodily needs and states resulting in external directedness that is reflected both in eating as a response to environmental cues and in field dependence. Studies implicate overprotective, age-inappropriate, and indulgent parenting in the development of both obesity and field dependence. Such parenting is typical of anxious attachment which was posited in this study as a psychological component in …

Fluvial Transport In The Narrator Brook, Devon: A Summary Of Sources, Dynamics And Controls, A.L. Murgatroyd
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
The Narrator Brook drains a catchment area of 4.68 km² which is entirely underlain by granite and which includes-moorland, improved pasture and coniferous forest plantation. Observations of suspended sediment and solute transport by the Narrator Brook are based on stream sampling combined with laboratory analysis. Bedload transport is measured by trap sunk into the stream bed. Respective yields of solutes, suspended sediment and bedload over the 19 months of observation (25/5/75 to 13/12/76) are 12.6 t/km², 4.0 t/km² and 0.1 t/km². Afforestation in the Narrator catchment is responsible for accelerating the rate of bank erosion and this has contributed significantly …
Aspects Of The Distribution And Ecology Of Gall Wasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) Occurring On The Aerial Parts Of The British Oak Species (Quercus Robur L.,Q.Petraea (Matt.)Liebl.) And Their Hybrids (Q.X Rosacea Bechst) With Particular Reference To Neuroterus Spp.., Michael Henry Martin
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Mature oaks covering the full range of the indigenous Quercus species, from the oak woods of Dartmoor and its periphery, were sampled each month during the growing season for the presence of cynipid oak galls. The distributions of galls within sites, within trees and within leaves were recorded, and an investigation into the factors which affect them was made. The distributions of galls on oaks were found to be influenced by climatic and topographical factors as well as by the behaviour of the wasps and the taxonomic status of the host oak. Oaks in exposed situations tended to host more …
The Effect Of Sex Condition, Growth Rate And Slaughter Weight On Live And Carcass Characteristics Of Welsh Mountain Lambs, John A. Kirk
The Effect Of Sex Condition, Growth Rate And Slaughter Weight On Live And Carcass Characteristics Of Welsh Mountain Lambs, John A. Kirk
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
A series of experiments were conducted to ascertain the effects of sex conditions, slaughter weight, environment and sire performance on the growth and carcass composition of Welsh Mountain lambs. Entire lambs reached target slaughter weight 28.5 days earlier than castrates. Killing our percentage was higher in castrates regardless of rearing environment and they yielded significantly greater carcass weights than entires. Estimated lean and fat percentages showed entire animals to have greater lean and less fat than castrates. Increases in slaughter weight resulted in significant increases in fat percentage with a corresponding decrease in lean percentage. Progeny testing of high and …

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The relevance of the measurement of raindrop-size distributions is discussed and data collection using a Joss distrometer is described. The most important sources of error in the experiment, due to both instrumental and environmental factors, are discussed. The results are analysed in a conventional manner, providing a relationship between rainfall rate and radar reflectivity factor.
The Effects Of Lysine Vasopressin On Conditioned Behaviour In Rats, James Joseph Hagan
The Effects Of Lysine Vasopressin On Conditioned Behaviour In Rats, James Joseph Hagan
School of Psychology Theses
This thesis is concerned with lysine vasopressin's (LVP's) behavioural activity. Chapter One describes vasopressin's synthesis, secretion, metabolism, pressor, antidiuretic and putative corticotrophic functions with emphasis on behaviourally significant aspects. Chapter Two reviews behavioural data showing that manipulations of endogenous vasopressin levels alter subsequent avoidance performance. Although these data have predominantly been interpreted in favour of vasopressin altering memory formation (consolidation) results reported from an experiment combining response prevention trials and vasopressin injections failed to support the consolidation hypotheis. Chapter Three reviews the response prevention literature and confirms the feasibility of using prevention trials with automated shuttle box training (Experiment One). …

The Effect Of P,P'-Ddt On The Shore Crab Carcinus Maenas (L), Pauline Elizabeth Jowett
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Some effects of DDT on the shore crab (Carcinus maenas) were investigated. Parameters examined included the activity of gill ATPases and their effects on ion and ammonia levels of the haemolymph. Histological alterations were observed by light microscopy. In an in vitro study, an homogenate of Carcinus gills was exposed to concentrations of DDT from 10ˉ¹º M to 10-5M. The activity of Na+ , K+ -ATPase was stimulated at all concentrations. The activity of Mg2+ -ATPase was inhibited at all concentrations. Total -ATPase activity represented the combined activity of both. In vivo studies on the effect of DDT on ATPases …
The Skin And Mucous Secretion Of The European Eel, Anguilla Anguilla. L ., Glenn C. Archer
The Skin And Mucous Secretion Of The European Eel, Anguilla Anguilla. L ., Glenn C. Archer
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The epidermis of the eel A. Anguilla L. secretes a mucous layer mainly from its mucous cells although there may also be a contribution from surface epidermal cells . Under certain conditions, the epidermal cells may transform to a secretory cell type that resembles, but is structurally distinct from a mucous cell . This observation has not previously been reported in fish epidermis. Specialised club cells, characteristic of the Anguillidae contain filamentous material that may be secreted beneath the epidermal surface. This previously unobserved phenomenon together with an increase in cell numbers around the lateral region may suggest an additional …
The Role Of Content In Reasoning, Kenneth Ian Manktelow
The Role Of Content In Reasoning, Kenneth Ian Manktelow
School of Psychology Theses
A programme of research is reported in which the effects of different contents in two deductive reasoning paradigms were investigated. A review of the literature showed that the two main determinants of performance are the logical structure of the task, and non-logical performance variables such as 'matching bias’. Matching is a prime determinant of behaviour in abstract tasks, e.g. Wason's Selection task. This is shown by systematically negating logical rule components. However, a large literature indicates that logical performance is facilitated by using thematic materials.
Human Reasoning: Logical And Nonlogical Explanations, Paul Pollard
Human Reasoning: Logical And Nonlogical Explanations, Paul Pollard
School of Psychology Theses
This thesis is concerned with subjects' responses to psychological 'reasoning’ tasks. Theoretical interpretations of responses to such tasks can be broadly categorised into logical explanations, that assume that subjects perform an analysis on the structure of the problem and nonlogical explanations, that explain responses as determined by some, logically irrelevant, feature of the problem. In part 1, data from relevant reasoning studies are reviewed with particular reference to identifying separate effects of logical and nonlogical factors. It is concluded that both factors appear to play a role in determining responses.
