Period, Break, Form, David Sergeant Nov 2022

Period, Break, Form, David Sergeant

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This essay examines the relationship between novelistic form and a historical moment shaped by new technologies in Dave Eggers's The Circle (2013) and Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Moon (2018). In both, the novel form is itself positioned as a major counterforce against the malignant powers that are attempting to form the age. Also in both, new technologies are understood not as primary or independent shaping forces but as enabling components of a larger political and economic form, a variant of capitalism. However, the crucial difference between the two novels is in how they periodize this capitalism, an act that is …

The impact of ethnicity on parental health outcome after paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) discharge remains unclear. Thirteen medical and healthcare databases, unpublished studies and grey literature were searched up to November 5, 2021. We performed a mixed-method systematic review to understand the impact of ethnicity on parental outcomes after PICU discharge, including eight quantitative and eight qualitative studies. Among 1529 parents included, 1064 (72%) were White. Higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder was seen in Black parents (17% White vs 36% Black, p = .03). Latino ethnicity was found to have protective effect against anxiety as compared to White …

Tracking The Associative Boost In Infancy, Kim Plunkett, Luche C Delle, Thomas Hills, Caroline Floccia Nov 2022

Tracking The Associative Boost In Infancy, Kim Plunkett, Luche C Delle, Thomas Hills, Caroline Floccia

School of Psychology

Do words that are both associatively and taxonomically related prime each other in the infant mental lexicon? We explore the impact of these semantic relations in the emerging lexicon. Using the head-turn preference procedure, we show that 18-month-old infants have begun to construct a semantic network of associatively and taxonomically related words, such as dog-cat or apple-cheese. We demonstrate that priming between words is longer-lasting when the relationship is both taxonomic and associative, as opposed to purely taxonomic, reflecting the associative boost reported in the adult priming literature. Our results demonstrate that 18-month-old infants are able to construct a lexical-semantic …

Artificial Reefs In The Arabian Gulf: Benefits, Challenges And Recommendations For Policy-Makers, A Bartholomew, Ja Burt, Lb Firth

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Artificial reef (AR) deployment has increased dramatically in the Arabian / Persian Gulf in recent years, and will likely continue as Gulf nations continue to develop their coastlines and expand fisheries. Unfortunately, there is little publicly-available information about AR programs in the Gulf, including information about management goals and program success. ARs can provide economic, social and ecological benefits, but they also have underappreciated risks associated with them. Benefits include increasing short-term catch rates for fisheries, increasing tourism, enhancing and protecting biodiversity and providing ecological services. Risks include exacerbating regional overfishing in the long-term, facilitating the spread of invasive species, …

Understanding How Language Revitalisation Works: A Realist Synthesis, Brandon Wiltshire, Steven Bird, Rebecca Hardwick Oct 2022

Understanding How Language Revitalisation Works: A Realist Synthesis, Brandon Wiltshire, Steven Bird, Rebecca Hardwick

Peninsula Medical School

Indigenous communities, linguists, teachers, and language activists have been developing methods to revitalise endangered languages over several decades. Not only are these methods diverse, they are usually implemented in various ways according to local needs and aspirations. Language revitalisation methods focus on proficiency, but there is also interest in strengthening identity, resilience, and wellbeing. Aside from a handful of successes, programs may not be achieving desired outcomes. One could try to evaluate specific programs. However, we believe that a necessary first step is to examine published literature of revitalisation efforts to develop initial understandings of how they work. In particular, …

Not Just A Trick: A Survey Study Exploring How ‘Exposing’ Exhibition Visitors To Science Of Magic Concepts Impacts Their Appreciation Of Magic, Gabriel Medeiros, Mathew Tompkins, Steve Bagienski, Gustav Kuhn

School of Psychology

The recent rise in scientific research on magic raises important issues about the impact that the dissemination of magic knowledge has on people’s appreciation of magic.Deception, secrecy, and mystery are inexorably intertwined with the idea of performance magic. Magicians traditionally do not reveal their secret methods to non-magicians. This study used a survey to assess how people’s appreciation of magic was impacted by a magic exhibition designed to highlight and reveal the psychological mechanisms that underpin magic. Visitors to the exhibition were asked to rate the impact of the exhibition on a range of measures assessing people’s interest and appreciation …

The Worst Case Garch-Copula Cvar Approach For Portfolio Optimisation: Evidence From Financial Markets., Tahani S. Alotaibi, Valle L Dalla, Matthew J. Craven

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Portfolio optimisation aims to efficiently find optimal proportions of portfolio assets, given certain constraints, and has been well-studied. While portfolio optimisation ascertains asset combinations most suited to investor requirements, numerous real-world problems impact its simplicity, e.g., investor preferences. Trading restrictions are also commonly faced, and must be met. However, in adding constraints to Markowitz's basic mean-variance model, problem complexity increases, causing difficulties for exact optimisation approaches to find large problem solutions inside reasonable timeframes. This paper addresses portfolio optimisation complexities by applying the Worst Case GARCH-Copula Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) approach. In particular, the GARCH-copula methodology is used to …

How Children's Advocacy Centers Law Enforcement Officers Cope With Work-Related Stress: Impacts And Approaches To Self-Care, Oliver W.J. Beer, Brieanne Beaujolais, Kathryn G. Wolf, Akram Ibrahim, Megan M. Letson

School of Health Professions

Work-related stress has been identified as being harmful for law enforcement officers’ (LEOs) health. The absence of effective coping strategies exacerbates the negative psychophysiological impacts on health. The literature suggests that law enforcement employers and communities also feel the impact of stress among LEOs. This study addresses the gap in the current literature in terms of qualitative-based exploration of the personal and professional impacts of LEs working within Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) and self-care and stress alleviation practices in response to environmental stressors. CAC LEOs’ responses to three open-ended responses were analyzed from a national survey in the United States. …

Determinants Of Ceo Compensation In The Ftse100 Constituent Firms, T Nawaz, A Pang

Plymouth Business School

The main objective of this paper is to examine the determinants of CEO compensation in the UK public listed companies. Our analysis, based on the sample drawn from the FTSE100 constituent firms, suggest that firm financial performance measured by return of assets (ROA), influence CEO compensation with the impact being most pronounced for the CEO total compensation. Results further suggest that corporate governance characteristics such as board size and CEO role duality have direct implications for CEO compensation. These attributes, however, differentially determine the various components of CEO compensation. Although the results of this research help to elucidate the importance …

A Vulnerability Centric System Of Systems Analysis On The Maritime Transportation Sector Most Valuable Assets: Recommendations For Port Facilities And Ships, Chronis Kapalidis, Stavros Karamperidis, Tim Watson, Georgios Koligiannis

Plymouth Business School

The maritime sector is a vital component of the global economy. Its international nature supersedes state boundaries and any disruption in its operations could have consequent and collateral global effects, affecting the socio-economic wellbeing of regions, states and peoples. The increasing adoption of digitalisation in the sector, primarily increases efficiency, minimize cost and maximise benefit, while improving safety, simultaneously introduces a new cyber threat landscape. The attack surface has broadened further due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as recent, high-profile cyber attacks to shipping companies have indicated. Cybersecurity is not limited to technology but involves people and business processes. Hence, to …

Children And Families With No Recourse To Public Funds: Learning From Case Reviews, A Jolly, A Gupta

School of Health Professions

This paper reviews 26 reports into deaths and serious abuse of children in families who were subject to the No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) rule. Our analysis illustrates vulnerabilities caused by exclusionary policies, exacerbating social deprivation and isolation experienced by the children and families and making it more difficult for professionals to respond in ways which safeguarded children's welfare. Drawing upon a social model for protecting children that requires recognition of the social determinants of harm and the economic, social and cultural barriers faced by families, we examine the experiences of children and families with NRPF who were the …

Spatialization Of Oppression, N Bobic, Farzaneh Haghighi Oct 2022

Spatialization Of Oppression, N Bobic, Farzaneh Haghighi

School of Art, Design and Architecture

For architecture and the urban to have relevance in the 21st Century, we cannot merely reignite the approaches of thought and design that were operative in the last century. Moreover, we can no longer afford to reduce them to a neutral backdrop of political realities. Architecture and urban space should be understood as political forces in and of themselves. There is explicit evidence of the inherent role that architecture and the urban play in numerous human-made crises, including but not limited to ongoing and unprecedented global problems – from the refugee crisis, the US-Mexico border, terrorist attacks, detention camps, numerous …

Aims: To investigate a stroke-specific self-management book, based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), as a therapist-supported intervention for psychological distress after stroke. Method: The design was a single case, randomised non-concurrent multiple-baseline design (MBD). Sixteen stroke survivors, eight males and eight females (mean age 60.6 years), participated in an MBD with three phases: A (randomised-duration baseline); B (intervention); and follow-up (at 3 weeks). During the baseline, participants received therapist contact only. In …

Evaluating Slim-Based Human Error Probability For Ecdis Cybersecurity In Maritime, Gizem Kayisoglu, Pelin Bolat, Kimberly Tam Oct 2022

Evaluating Slim-Based Human Error Probability For Ecdis Cybersecurity In Maritime, Gizem Kayisoglu, Pelin Bolat, Kimberly Tam

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

There is an undeniable recognition that maritime cybersecurity risk management should involve process, technology, and people. However, thus far, most studies have focused on the technical and process aspects of maritime cybersecurity, more than on the human element. On a vessel, the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is, amongst all the electronic devices on the bridge, a complex and indispensable maritime sociotechnical system that must consider both technical and human aspects. In the context of maritime cyber resilience, it is important to note that when developing strategies for maritime cybersecurity, one cannot only consider technical security measures and …

Social Prescribing For Children And Young People, Marcello Bertotti, Dan Hayes, Vashti Berry, Paul Jarvis-Beesley, Kerryn Husk

Peninsula Medical School

Mental ill health in children and young people (ie, people aged 10–19 years) is a global problem. In 2019, one in seven children and young people had diagnosed mental health conditions. The drivers for this high burden are complex and include home-based and school-based risks, lifestyle factors, and vulnerabilities due to disability, discrimination, and socioeconomic circumstances. There is no quick fix, but one holistic approach with potential is social prescribing. Social prescribing is gaining recognition globally, with significant policy and research traction in England , where it is now included as an all-age service in the 2019 NHS Long Term …

A Paperless Approach To Clinical Trial Systems: From Specification To Validation And Beyond., Mp Bailey, H Abraham, D Maddock, R Ashford, C Hayward

Peninsula Medical School

Over the past decade, it has been widely accepted that a paperless approach to certain aspects of clinical trials can increase quality, efficiency and, in many cases, reduce risk. Handling large amounts of clinical trial data on paper can become very expensive, difficult to maintain, and has been linked to a higher rate of data errors and omissions. Tangible improvements can be made to studies when they are designed with modern technology in mind. For example, participant diversity and inclusion can be increased or the time and mon¬¬ey spent on the collection, management, and validation of clinical trial data reduced. …

This paper interrogates the concept of transdisciplinarity, both theoretically and practically, from a perspective of early career researchers (ECRs) in transformative ocean governance research. Aiming to advance research methodologies for future complex sustainability challenges, the paper seeks to illuminate some common uncertainties and challenges surrounding transdisciplinarity from a marine science perspective. Following a literature review on transdisciplinary research, workshops, and a series of surveys, we determine that transdisciplinarity appears to be a concept in search of definition, and that there is a need to explore transdisciplinarity specifically from an ocean research perspective. The paper discusses a number of challenges experienced …

Sticky Me: Self-Relevance Slows Reinforcement Learning, M Golubickis, Cn Macrae Oct 2022

Sticky Me: Self-Relevance Slows Reinforcement Learning, M Golubickis, Cn Macrae

School of Psychology

A prominent facet of social-cognitive functioning is that self-relevant information is prioritized in perception, attention, and memory. What is not yet understood, however, is whether similar effects arise during learning. In particular, compared to other people (e.g., best friend) is information about the self acquired more rapidly? To explore this matter, here we used a probabilistic selection task in combination with computational modeling (i.e., Reinforcement Learning Drift Diffusion Model analysis) to establish how self-relevance influences learning under conditions of uncertainty (i.e., choices are based on the perceived likelihood of positive and negative outcomes). Across two experiments, a consistent pattern of …
