Background and Objectives: Research into people with dementia's experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic has tended to focus on vulnerabilities and negative outcomes, with the risk of reproducing a discourse in which people with dementia are positioned as passive. Informed by concepts positioning people with dementia as ‘active social agents’, we aimed to identify the pandemic-related challenges faced by people recently diagnosed with dementia and examine the ways in which they actively coped with, and adapted to, these challenges. Research Design and Methods: In-depth interviews with 21 people recently diagnosed with dementia, recruited through an existing national cohort. Data was analysed …

Introduction Harmonising education to support workforce mobility has been a policy objective for the European Union. However, alignment across varied national contexts presents challenges in dental education. Methods A systematic literature review with narrative synthesis. Searches of the electronic databases Embase [Ovid]; MEDLINE [Ovid]; Scopus; CINAHL; AMED and PsycINFO were conducted for relevant material published between 2000 and 2019 on undergraduate curricula, quality standards and learning outcomes in dentistry. Results Seventy-six papers met the inclusion criteria. Fifty-three papers were commentaries or editorials, twenty-one were research studies, and two were literature reviews on specific dental subfields. Eighteen of the research studies …

This paper interrogates the concept of transdisciplinarity, both theoretically and practically, from a perspective of early career researchers (ECRs) in transformative ocean governance research. Aiming to advance research methodologies for future complex sustainability challenges, the paper seeks to illuminate some common uncertainties and challenges surrounding transdisciplinarity from a marine science perspective. Following a literature review on transdisciplinary research, workshops, and a series of surveys, we determine that transdisciplinarity appears to be a concept in search of definition, and that there is a need to explore transdisciplinarity specifically from an ocean research perspective. The paper discusses a number of challenges experienced …
Workflow Simulation And Multi-Threading Aware Task Scheduling For Heterogeneous Computing, Vasilios Kelefouras, Karim Djemame
Workflow Simulation And Multi-Threading Aware Task Scheduling For Heterogeneous Computing, Vasilios Kelefouras, Karim Djemame
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Efficient application scheduling is critical for achieving high performance in heterogeneous computing systems. This problem has proved to be NP-complete even for the homogeneous case, heading research efforts in obtaining low complexity heuristics that produce good quality schedules. Such an example is HEFT, one of the most efficient list scheduling heuristics in terms of makespan and robustness. In this paper, we propose two task scheduling methods for heterogeneous computing systems that can be integrated to several task scheduling algorithms. First, a method that improves the scheduling time (the time for obtaining the output schedule) of a family of task scheduling …

Sticky Me: Self-Relevance Slows Reinforcement Learning, M Golubickis, Cn Macrae
School of Psychology
A prominent facet of social-cognitive functioning is that self-relevant information is prioritized in perception, attention, and memory. What is not yet understood, however, is whether similar effects arise during learning. In particular, compared to other people (e.g., best friend) is information about the self acquired more rapidly? To explore this matter, here we used a probabilistic selection task in combination with computational modeling (i.e., Reinforcement Learning Drift Diffusion Model analysis) to establish how self-relevance influences learning under conditions of uncertainty (i.e., choices are based on the perceived likelihood of positive and negative outcomes). Across two experiments, a consistent pattern of …

The purpose of this study is to examine how corporate communication of their social programs on their websites affects the ratings of those programs by independent rating agencies. Firms expend resources on corporate social programs (CSPs) to promote their corporate social responsibility and sustainability credentials. Stakeholders, however, often respond to such “self-promotion” with skepticism because they believe that there are inconsistencies between corporate claims and actions. This research draws on attribution theory as a framework to examine how the perceived CSP performance of firms by uncontrollable sources are affected when firms disseminate CSP information on firm websites, i.e. a controllable …

Introduction Patients with low levels of knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their health and well-being (activation) are more likely to have unmet health needs, delay seeking healthcare and need emergency care. National Health Service England estimates that this may be applicable to 25%-40% of patients with long-term health conditions. Volunteer peer coaching may support people to increase their level of activation. This form of intervention may be particularly effective for people with low levels of activation. Methods and analysis This single site, two-arm randomised controlled trial has been designed to assess the feasibility of conducting a definitive trial of …

Reconstructing Sedimentary Processes In A Permian Channel–Lobe Transition Zone: An Outcrop Study In The Karoo Basin, South Africa, F Pohl, Jt Eggenhuisen, J De Leeuw, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Turbidity currents commonly bypass sediment in submarine channels on the continental slope, and deposit sediment lobes farther down-dip on the flat and unconfined abyssal plain. Seafloor and outcrop data have shown that the transition from bypass to deposition usually occurs over complex zones referred to as channel–lobe transition zones (CLTZs). Recognition of these zones in cores and outcrop remains challenging due to a lack of characteristic sedimentary facies and structures. This paper focuses on Unit E of the Permian Fort Brown Formation in the Karoo Basin, South Africa, in the Slagtersfontein outcrop complex, which has previously been interpreted as a …

Background: With conventional coral reef conservation methods proving ineffective against intensifying climate change, efforts have focussed on augmenting coral tolerance to warmer water—the primary driver of coral declines. We document coral cover and composition in relation to sea surface temperature (SST) over 25-years, of six marginal reefs in an upwelling area of Costa Rica’s Eastern Tropical Pacific. Methods: Using reef survey data and sea surface temperature (SST) dating back over 25-years, we document coral cover and composition of six marginal reefs in an upwelling area of Costa Rica’s Eastern Tropical Pacific in relation to thermal highs and lows. Results.: A …

Remote Sensing Of Boat Abandonment Using Google Earth, Millicent R. Payne, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Abandoned boats represent a pervasive and growing problem in the coastal zone that has received little regulatory or scientific attention. In this study, we show how Google Earth can be employed to remotely identify abandoned boats and provide information on their size, age and condition. Based on specified criteria for abandonment, a survey of southern England (1700 km in length) revealed the presence of 266 boats that were mainly located in the intertidal zones of estuaries and inlets and that were often contained within clusters. Boat length ranged from 2.6 to 60 m (median = 10.5 m), and since 2004 …

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Diospyros villosa leaves and stem bark extracts is described. The stem bark AgNPs of D. villosa synthesized at 80 °C (S80) showed good scavenging activity with a lower IC50 value of 8.75 µg·mL−1 compared to ascorbic acid (9.58 µg·mL−1). The total phenol content of the S80 AgNPs was measured and found to be 10.22 ± 0.14 mg.g−1 gallic acid equivalence (GAE). Bacterial growth inhibition (% GI) and violacein inhibition (% VI) of 10.08% and 58.83%, respectively, was observed against C.subtsugae CV017 with leaf AgNPs synthesized at 80 °C (L80) at 80 μg·mL−1. For the first time in the history of humanity, the number of people over 65 surpassed those under 5 in 2018. Undoubtedly, older people will play a significant role in the future of the economy and society in general, and technological innovation will be indispensable to support them. Thus, we were interested in learning how home automation could enable older people to live independently for longer. To better understand this, we held focus groups with UK senior citizens in 2021, and we analyzed the data derived from them from the perspective of affective computing. We have trained a machine learning …
Persevering With Bandwagoning, Not Hedging: Why European Security Cooperation Still Conforms To Realism, Lorenzo Cladi
Persevering With Bandwagoning, Not Hedging: Why European Security Cooperation Still Conforms To Realism, Lorenzo Cladi
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Over the past few years, European security cooperation has been revived. The EU has launched several defence initiatives and some member states, such as France have launched their own collaborative initiatives. The renewed activism in European security cooperation followed several years of inactivity and warrants theoretical investigation. Hedging is a concept that has been employed to make sense of renewed activism in European security cooperation. By pursuing hedging, Europeans are preparing for a future in which the US might be unwilling or unable to get involved, and to assist with, European security affairs. Advancing a neorealist analysis, this article argues …

Forecasting Postoperative Delirium In Older Adult Patients With Fast-And-Frugal Decision Trees, Maria Heinrich, Jan K. Woike, Claudia D. Spies, Odette Wegwarth
School of Psychology
Postoperative delirium (POD) is associated with increased complication and mortality rates, particularly among older adult patients. However, guideline recommendations for POD detection and management are poorly implemented. Fast-and-frugal trees (FFTrees), which are simple prediction algorithms, may be useful in this context. We compared the capacity of simple FFTrees with two more complex models—namely, unconstrained classification trees (UDTs) and logistic regression (LogReg)—for the prediction of POD among older surgical patients in the perioperative setting. Models were trained and tested on the European BioCog project clinical dataset. Based on the entire dataset, two different FFTrees were developed for the pre-operative and postoperative …

Longitudinal Study Of ‘Retraining’ Non-Maths Specialist Teachers To Become Capable, Confident Teachers Of Mathematics, Naomi Sani, David Burghes
Plymouth Institute of Education
One of the key problems to be solved in mathematics education in England is that the demand for mathematics teachers is far in excess of the supply. Acknowledging that there are simply too few mathematics teachers, the UK government has invested significantly in retraining programmes. These programmes ‘retrain’ out-of-field teachers, that is, teachers of other subjects or from other phases, to teach secondary mathematics. The increased mathematical demand of the reformed GCSE courses coupled with the expectation that most post-16 students will engage with some mathematics (studying for A and AS levels, a Core Maths qualification or re-sitting GCSE) means …

The impact of otter trawling on the relationship between functional traits of benthic invertebrates and specific biogeochemical processes were investigated in the oligotrophic Cretan Sea. The fishery is managed through a seasonal closure during the summer. During two seasons (winter and summer) replicate samples were taken from the field from a commercial trawl ground and an adjacent control area. Environmental parameters related to sediment biogeochemistry were measured including particulate organic carbon, sedimentary organic carbon, bottom water and sedimentary chlorophyll a and phaeopigment concentrations as well as benthic oxygen consumption. A significant impact of trawling was recorded only for bottom water …

How Much Does The Board Composition Matter? The Impact Of Board Gender Diversity On Ceo Compensation, T Nawaz
How Much Does The Board Composition Matter? The Impact Of Board Gender Diversity On Ceo Compensation, T Nawaz
Plymouth Business School
The notion that female directors are better disposed to protect shareholders’ interests has brought boardroom gender diversity into the limelight. Echoing these emerging trends, this paper analyzes the relationship between board gender diversity, i.e., proportion of female directors on the corporate board, and Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) compensation. Consistent with conjecture, the analysis suggests that large and diversified corporate boards are the main determinants of CEO compensation. Furthermore, longer-tenured CEOs who also serve as board chairperson receive higher total compensation and bonuses than their counterparts do. Into the bargain are corporate performance proxied by return of assets (ROA) and firm …

Teaching Qubits To Sing: Mission Impossible?, E Miranda, Bn Siegelwax
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This paper introduces QuSing, a system that learns to sing new tunes by listening to examples. QuSing extracts sequencing rules from input music and uses these rules to generate new tunes, which are sung by a vocal synthesiser. We developed a method to represent rules for musical composition as quantum circuits. We claim that such musical rules are quantum native: they are naturally encodable in the amplitudes of quantum states. To evaluate a rule to generate a subsequent event, the system builds the respective quantum circuit dynamically and measures it. After a brief discussion about the vocal synthesis methods that …

Ultra-Wideband Communication And Sensor Fusion Platform For The Purpose Of Multi-Perspective Localization, C Li, Henry Bulman, Toby Whitley, S Li
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Localization is a keystone for a robot to work within its environment and with other robots. There have been many methods used to solve this problem. This paper deals with the use of beacon-based localization to answer the research question: Can ultra-wideband technology be used to effectively localize a robot with sensor fusion? This paper has developed an innovative solution for creating a sensor fusion platform that uses ultra-wideband communication as a localization method to allow an environment to be perceived and inspected in three dimensions from multiple perspectives simultaneously. A series of contributions have been presented, supported by an …

Word Embeddings For Automatic Equalization In Audio Mixing, Satvik Venkatesh, David Moffat, Eduardo Reck Miranda
School of Art, Design and Architecture
In recent years, machine learning has been widely adopted to automate the audio mixing process. Automatic mixing systems have been applied to various audio effects such as gain-adjustment, equalization, and reverberation. These systems can be controlled through visual interfaces, providing audio examples, using knobs, and semantic descriptors. Using semantic descriptors or textual information to control these systems is an effective way for artists to communicate their creative goals. In this paper, we explore the novel idea of using word embeddings to represent semantic descriptors. Word embeddings are generally obtained by training neural networks on large corpora of written text. These …

Sequential Lonsdaleite To Diamond Formation In Ureilite Meteorites Via In Situ Chemical Fluid/Vapor Deposition, Ag Tomkins, Nc Wilson, C Macrae, A Salek, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Ureilite meteorites are arguably our only large suite of samples from the mantle of a dwarf planet and typically contain greater abundances of diamond than any known rock. Some also contain lonsdaleite, which may be harder than diamond. Here, we use electron microscopy to map the relative distribution of coexisting lonsdaleite, diamond, and graphite in ureilites. These maps show that lonsdaleite tends to occur as polycrystalline grains, sometimes with distinctive fold morphologies, partially replaced by diamond + graphite in rims and cross-cutting veins. These observations provide strong evidence for how the carbon phases formed in ureilites, which, despite much conjecture …

BackgroundApproximately 15 million people in the UK live with obesity, around 5 million of whom have severe obesity (body mass index (BMI) ≥35kg/m2). Having severe obesity markedly compromises health, well-being and quality of life, and substantially reduces life expectancy. These adverse outcomes are prevented or ameliorated by weight loss, for which sustained behavioural change is the cornerstone of treatment. Although NHS specialist ‘Tier 3’ Weight Management Services (T3WMS) support people with severe obesity, using individual and group-based treatment, the current evidence on optimal intervention design and outcomes is limited. Due to heterogeneity of severe obesity, there is a need to …
