Relationships Of Temperature, Time And Moisture Content To The Viability Of Seeds Of Kentucky Bluegrass, Louis N. Bass
Relationships Of Temperature, Time And Moisture Content To The Viability Of Seeds Of Kentucky Bluegrass, Louis N. Bass
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Kentucky bluegrass seed is usually harvested at quite high moisture levels. The freshly harvested material is packed in burlap bags where it may remain a few minutes, a few hours, or a day or two. While in the bags, the green material may also be piled up or loaded on trucks for long hauls. The seedsmen who handle bluegrass seed have known for a long time that green seed will heat while in the bags, especially when the bags sit for a long time, but they did not know how long the green seed could be left in the bags …
Effects Of Ammonium And Nitrate Nutrition On Floral Initiation Of Tomato Plants, John Hacskaylo
Effects Of Ammonium And Nitrate Nutrition On Floral Initiation Of Tomato Plants, John Hacskaylo
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There has been extensive work on the relationship of temperature, photoperiod and nitrogen supply to the time required to bring a plant from the vegetative to the reproductive phase. This investigation was designed to ascertain whether any differences existed between the time required for the initiation of the first floral primordia in tomato plants when treated with a nutrient solution containing all available nitrogen in the ammoniacal form as compared to a nutrient solution where all available nitrogen was in the nitrate form.

Profile Properties Of Some Loess-Derived Brunizem Soils Of Southeastern Iowa, R. Hunter, F. F. Riecken, J. E. Mcclelland
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Brown (1936, p 18) summarized the information up to 1936 on the geography and classification of the prairie loess-derived soils of southeastern Iowa. The Tama and Grundy were the major series recognized. Field studies since 1942 indicated there was a need to revise the concept of these series. The present paper presents some data on selected profiles formerly classed with these series.
A Disturbed Buried Gumhotil Soil Profile In Jefferson County, Iowa, George M. Schafer
A Disturbed Buried Gumhotil Soil Profile In Jefferson County, Iowa, George M. Schafer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the progress of the soil survey of Jefferson County, Iowa observations of the Kansan gumbotil and the overlying loess have revealed a limited number of locations in this county and in adjacent Van Buren County in which there is a very uneven boundary between these two materials. This deformation of the gumbotil and loess contact appears to be attributable to periglacial conditions prevalent during a part of the Pleistocene.
Subsoil Textural Variations On The Clarionwebster Experimental Farm As Related To The Mankato Glacial Deposit, Everett M. White
Subsoil Textural Variations On The Clarionwebster Experimental Farm As Related To The Mankato Glacial Deposit, Everett M. White
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Clarion-Webster Experimental Farm is an 80-acre experimental farm of Iowa State College located 1 mile south of Kanawha, Iowa (WY2 SWYJ, Sec. 34, T94N, R25W, Hancock County). A detailed soil map was made to determine the uniformity of the soils and the subsoil material. The map was constructed from the results of auger borings, 54 to 60 inches deep, located at the corners of a 50-foot square grid laid out on the tract. Thus, there were more than 1,000 borings made on the 80 acres.
Identification And Measurement Of The Arithmetical Concepts And Abilities Of Pre-School And Primary Grade School Children, Thomas E. Hannum
Identification And Measurement Of The Arithmetical Concepts And Abilities Of Pre-School And Primary Grade School Children, Thomas E. Hannum
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A recent trend in elementary education has been the development of readiness programs. Reading readiness programs have proved their value and have been widely accepted by most educators. Programs of readiness for arithmetic are considered to be similarly important, but are developing more slowly. An arithmetic readiness program requires some method of measuring a child's level of competence in numerical skills and abilities prior to the introduction of teaching arithmetic. No satisfactory instrument has been constructed and standardized for use with children varying from the pre-school to the second-grade level. The primary purpose of this investigation was to construct and …

Ecology Of The Raccoon In Central Iowa, J. L. Cabalka, R. R. Costa, G. O. Hendrickson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The marked increase of the Upper Mississippi Valley raccoon (Procyon lotor hirtus N. and G.) in Iowa during recent years is well-known. Sanderson (1951) and recent releases by the Iowa State Conservation Commission suggest a yearly average of about three or four times as many raccoons during the decade 1943-'52 as in the period 1933-'42. The general opinion of hunters and trappers was that such increases were apparent also in Story County, of central Iowa. From raccoon family track and other "signs along streams Costa and Hendrickson estimated roughly two family groups of raccoons to the mile, or approximately …
Food Habits Of The Carp In Northwest Iowa Lakes, Tom Moen
Food Habits Of The Carp In Northwest Iowa Lakes, Tom Moen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the comparatively short time since carp (Cyprinus carpio) were brought to the United States, they have dominated an amazingly large percentage of the fishery resources of this country and an equally large percent of the efforts of fishery management. Carp have been credited at one time or another, by sportsmen and biologists alike, with being the root of all fishery problems and in many cases game problems as well. The food and feeding habits of the carp usually receive the lion's share of this blame. The data presented in this study form a portion of a general …
Determination Of The Incubation Period Of Bacillus Larvae White, Causal Organism Of American Foulbrood In Honey Bees (A Pis Mellifera L.), O. W. Park
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Diseases of the immature stages of the honey bee, i.e. the brood, cause large annual losses in bees, honey, and equipment. It would be bad enough if such losses were reflected only in the increased cost of producing honey, but far more serious is the decreased yield of at least 50 orchard, garden and farm crops. These are crops such as apples, cucumbers and the clovers which require or benefit from the pollinating services of the honey bee. Two types of brood diseases, both known as foulbrood, had been recognized prior to 1900, but were inadequately distinguished until White (1907, …
A Check List Of Mammals Of Present Occurrence In Iowa With Notes On New Additions And Distribution Since 1937, Emmett Polder
A Check List Of Mammals Of Present Occurrence In Iowa With Notes On New Additions And Distribution Since 1937, Emmett Polder
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There is little definite information regarding the distribution limits of mammals known to occur in Iowa and neighboring states. The purpose of this paper is to add to the rather sketchy knowledge of mammal distribution in Iowa. There is need for much more observation and collection of specimens and data before a comprehensive picture of mammal distribution is completed. A better knowledge of where certain mammalian forms do, or do not, occur is important to the students of ecology, game management, parasitology, taxonomy, and agriculture since the mammal coactions with other life forms have important relations to these fields.
A Study Of What 1,085 Parents Think Of Selected Areas Of Mason City Public School Education, Evan Dale Foster
A Study Of What 1,085 Parents Think Of Selected Areas Of Mason City Public School Education, Evan Dale Foster
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The public school was established to educate youth; and the state has delegated responsibility to school boards, administrators, and teachers for the accomplishment of this end. While the citizens through their representatives create school laws the local community retains many means for determining the program of its own public school. Thus it would seem highly desirable for public school personnel to know the opinions held by the parents about various parts of the school program.

Primeval Forest Types In Lowa, William A. Dick-Peddie
Primeval Forest Types In Lowa, William A. Dick-Peddie
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The vegetation in Iowa has changed greatly since the advent of the settled. The prairie in Iowa has been virtually destroyed and there has been an advance of forest in all parts of Iowa (6). This study was made in order that a clearer understanding might be obtained of the primeval forest complex and its relation to prairie. Prairie made up about eighty-five per cent of the total vegetation in Iowa at the time of settlement (4). The forested area was completely cleared, hence, a study of the original forest as a link to yesterday is exceedingly difficult. It is …
Seed Retention Of Some Prairie Plants, A. L. Bakke, E. P. Sylwester
Seed Retention Of Some Prairie Plants, A. L. Bakke, E. P. Sylwester
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There are still a number of native prairie areas in Iowa. One of these outstanding tracts belongs to the Steel family of Cherokee, Iowa. It consists of about half a section located in Cedar Township in Cherokee county (N. 1/2 Sec. 16) one and a half miles northwest of the town of Larabee. The area has never been plowed: as a matter of fact, it has never been fenced. The flora of this area, like most of the other generally treeless areas of the state consist largely of perennial plants of a distinctly xerophytic type (1.3.4.5). The Graminae are the …
Relative Pathogenicity Of Pythium Species Attacking Seedling Com, A. L. Hooker
Relative Pathogenicity Of Pythium Species Attacking Seedling Com, A. L. Hooker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Several species of Pythium have been isolated and identified as inciting a root rot and blight of seedling corn. In view of the overall importance of this group of fungi, a comparative study of the relative pathogenicity of a selected number of Pythium species is justified.
A Proposed Design For Utilizing School-Made Photographic Slides In The Secondary School, Everett G. Brower
A Proposed Design For Utilizing School-Made Photographic Slides In The Secondary School, Everett G. Brower
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study is concerned with photography as a means . of constructing supplemental instruction materials. The study was designed to appeal to the educator who is concerned with vitalizing and extending the educational program of the school. Photography has been generally accepted as a worth-while leisure time activity for society, and recently educators have begun to realize its value as a teaching medium. The terms motion picture and audio-visual education have become almost synonymous. As a result, many of the simpler teaching aids have been neglected and have been relegated to undeserved minor importance. However, the use of the simpler …

Macropseudogynes (Or Pterergates?) In Formica Fossaceps Buren (Formicidae), R. L. King, R. M. Sallee
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Large worker ants with vestigial wings were found in certain colonies of Formica fossaceps Buren at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory near Milford, Iowa. This paper deals with one of these colonies (49F), found on the Laboratory grounds, June 15. 1949; vestigial winged workers were present in considerable numbers in this colony. Extensive collections were made: in 1949, a total of 1414 workers, 117 (8.3%) with vestigial wings; in 1950, 9 males and 539 workers, 32 (5.9%) with vestigial wings; the colony was not found in 1951. The total number of workers was 1953, of which 119 (7.6%) had vestigial …

Properties Of Soils Of The Outwash Terraces Of Wisconsin Age In Iowa, C. Lynn Coultas, Ralph J. Mccracken
Properties Of Soils Of The Outwash Terraces Of Wisconsin Age In Iowa, C. Lynn Coultas, Ralph J. Mccracken
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
For adequate classification and mapping of soils it is necessary to learn as much as possible about their chemical and physical properties, their age, and the parent materials or geological materials from which they have formed. Soil properties which vary with age, texture (the particle size distribution), and lithology have significant bearing, for example, on use and management suggestions, corn suitability ratings, and tax assessment value of soils. Thus it becomes necessary to discriminate age differences and significant textural and lithologic variations in the materials being studied. In the case of most Iowa soils, these problems are held in common …
Congenital Abnormalities Associated With Vitamin E Malnutrition, Byron H. Thomas, Dorothy Wei Cheng
Congenital Abnormalities Associated With Vitamin E Malnutrition, Byron H. Thomas, Dorothy Wei Cheng
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Congenital abnormalities are known to occur occasionally in man and farm livestock, and frequently in laboratory animals subjected to certain types of experimentation. A high percentage of the cases are fatal to the young depending on the nature and severity of the complications. In many instances death of the affected young occurs during pregnancy or parturition. Should the feti survive parturition death usually follows shortly thereafter. Extended survival occurs in a small percentage of young and these are mildly to severely handicapped in one or more of a multiplicity of ways. There are many causes of congenital abnormalities. Some are …
Preliminary Studies Of The Moody And Galva Soil Series Of Northwestern Iowa, H. D. Foth, F. F. Riecken
Preliminary Studies Of The Moody And Galva Soil Series Of Northwestern Iowa, H. D. Foth, F. F. Riecken
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Recent studies in the midwest have confirmed a relationship between the thickness and distribution of the loess and the morphological, chemical and physical properties of soils developed from loess. In southwestern Iowa studies by Hutton (2) and Ulrich (6) showed increased differentiation of soils as the distance from the loess source increased and the thickness of the loess decreased. Hunter (1) reported similar relationships between the properties of the loess and soils developed in southeastern Iowa. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study regarding the possibility of similar relationships in northwestern Iowa. Profile sites were selected on loess …

Some Characteristics Of An Alkali Soil Of The Missouri River Bottomlands, Monona County, Lowa, George M. Schafer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Sections have been measured at Crystal River Ranch, Thompson Creek, Mount Sopris, Coal Creek and Schofield Park. Maroon and Gothic formation can be recognized in all but the Coal Creek section. The Belden shale is, however, unexposed in these sections. Incomplete sections of Gothic at Crystal River Ranch and Thompson Creek include large amounts of gypsum. At Mt. Sopris, however, only 60 feet of gypsum is present and none was observed at Schofield Park. The Maroon formation increases in thickness from approximately 1900 feet at Glenwood Springs to a maximum of about 7100 feet at Crystal River Ranch. Thereafter it …
