Phaenological Notes, L. H. Pammel Jan 1890

Phaenological Notes, L. H. Pammel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Among the many interesting observations in connection with our flora is the relation that plants have to climatology. But with the addition of new plants every year to our list of those cultivated for utilitarian or ornamental purposes, it is important to record exact data in regard to their behavior under cultivation. But in plant climatology all plants should be studied with reference to various climatic conditions.

Some years since a portion of supposed fossil wood was obtained from an eighteen inch limestone layer about six or eight feet below the Geode bed. It was secure by Mr. S. J. A brief mention was made of it in a letter to the editors of the American Journal of Science and Arts, as noted in the May issue of 1878.

This is a letter from Elizabeth Grimes, wife of James Grimes, she’s sending it in response to recently learning about the death of another friend. In this letter, she is saying kind words about her virtuous late friend, religion, and sheds light on the process of mourning in the Victorian era of America. Additionally, there is some information about the state of the government at the time as the letter is written just 15 days before the secession of South Carolina from the Union and 4 months before the beginning of the civil war.
