Inheritance Of Resistance To Two Races Of Puccinia Coronata Cda. Var. Avenae Fraser And Led., M. D. Simons, H. C. Murphy Jan 1954

Inheritance Of Resistance To Two Races Of Puccinia Coronata Cda. Var. Avenae Fraser And Led., M. D. Simons, H. C. Murphy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oats rank third in importance among the cereal crops of the United States and represent the most important small grain crop in many states. Crown rust (Puccinia coronata Cda. var. avenae Fraser & Led.) usually has been the most destructive disease of oats in the United States and throughout the world. The most effective means of controlling this disease has been the development and distribution of varieties resistant to the common races of the fungus. Before a resistant variety can be used effectively and efficiently as a source of resistance in breeding, it is essential that the genetic factors …

Synthesis Of Estrogenic Isoflavone Derivatives, Lester Yoder, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs Jan 1954

Synthesis Of Estrogenic Isoflavone Derivatives, Lester Yoder, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Natural estrogens in plants have assumed considerable importance since the demonstration of their presence in subterranean clover by Bennetts (1) in 1946 and the identification of the isoflavone, genistein (V, 4', 5, 7-OH) as the probable substance responsible for some of the estrogenic activity by Curnow and Bennetts (2) in 1952. Earlier the isoflavones were found in soybean meal as genistein glucoside (3) (5), methyl genistein (V, 6',5, 7,-OH,8- CH3), isogenistein (V,6',5,7-OH), tatoin (V,4',5-OH,8-CH3) ( 4), daidzein (V,4',7-OH) and formononetin (V,4'-OCH3,7-OH) (5). Furthermore the isoflavone biochanin A (V, 4'-OCH3, 5, 7-OH) was …

Cover Density Of A City Summer And Fall Bronzed Grackle Roost, John C. W. Bliese Jan 1954

Cover Density Of A City Summer And Fall Bronzed Grackle Roost, John C. W. Bliese

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Ames, Iowa, is one of the many Midwestern cities that have the dubious distinction of having a "blackbird" roost. During the summer and fall months thousands of birds each evening come to roost in the shade trees in· residential areas. Records kept in 1951 (Bliese, 1953a) indicated that roughly 74 per cent of the birds were bronzed grackles, Quiscalus quiscula. Regularly associated with them were about 22 per cent starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, 3 per cent cowbirds, Molothrus ater, and 1 per cent robins, Turdus migratorius. Observations from 1949 to 1952 also revealed that at times purple …

A Proposed Comparison Of Fall Roadside Pheasant Counts And Flushing Rates, E. L. Kozicky, H. O. Hartley, G. O. Hendrickson Jan 1954

A Proposed Comparison Of Fall Roadside Pheasant Counts And Flushing Rates, E. L. Kozicky, H. O. Hartley, G. O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although the fall roadside pheasant census (Bennett and Hendrickson, 1938) has reflected the fall pheasant population from an administrative standpoint for the past 17 years within the primary range in Iowa (Kozicky, et al., 1952), there still exist the problems of correlating these roadside counts to actual populations or flushing rates. Inasmuch as we do not have any known method of obtaining exact numbers of birds for a given ·section of land at the present time, we cannot develop a method of interpreting the roadside count as reflecting a mean number of birds per acre in the primary pheasant range …

The Present Status Of Systematic Mammalogy In Iowa With Some Notes On Recent Mammal Collecting Within The State, Lowell S. Miller Jan 1954

The Present Status Of Systematic Mammalogy In Iowa With Some Notes On Recent Mammal Collecting Within The State, Lowell S. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In this short discussion the author will try to explore the present status of systematic mammalogy in this state and will show by his own trapping results that there is a great deal of work yet to be done. Thomas G. Scott (1937) published a paper entitled "Mammals of Iowa" in the Iowa State College Journal of Science. In the introduction he implies that the purpose of the paper is to stimulate interest in the systematics of mammals in Iowa. In searching through the recent literature on the subject the author has come to the conclusion that it did not …

Vocational Interests Of High School Seniors In Cedar Falls, Iowa, Donald L. Hanson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The primary purposes of this study are to (1) discover the vocational interests of the high school seniors in Cedar Falls, and (2) determine the influence of various factors on their vocational choices. Although it is not a purpose of this study, it is expected that a basis for follow-up studies of this same group will be provided. This study does not attempt to evaluate the schools' curriculum in view of their vocational assistance to students. Neither will it attempt to evaluate the occupational opportunities of the city when compared to students' vocational interests. But, through this study, the situation …

Cuprous Oxide As A Catalyst. Ii. Adsorption By Cuprous Oxide, R. C. Brown, R. C. Peabody Jan 1954

Cuprous Oxide As A Catalyst. Ii. Adsorption By Cuprous Oxide, R. C. Brown, R. C. Peabody

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a previous paper3, data were presented which demonstrated that cuprous oxide, prepared by the glucose reduction of a cupric nitrate solution at temperatures below 85°, was an active catalyst for the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. It was also shown that the cuprous oxide was promoted by the addition of calcium oxide and vanadium tetroxidc. The most active mixture contained these oxides in the ratio Cu2O: V204: CaO: : 1.0: 0.71: 1.4. In order to elucidate the role played by the catalyst in the hydrogenation of furfural, the absorptive capacity …

Tonal Balance Within The Concert Band: An Objective Approach To Augment Subjective Theories, John L. Evenson Jan 1954

Tonal Balance Within The Concert Band: An Objective Approach To Augment Subjective Theories, John L. Evenson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The school band has become one of the foremost means of evaluating the program of music education in the public school. Although a school music program has many assets which cannot possibly be made articulate to the administration, school board, and public through a performing unit such as the concert band, the music educator is under pressure to produce fine results in his performing unit, and should strive to make every appearance of the group as musically perfect as possible. Good tonal balance is essential in obtaining this result.

The Status Of Certain Aspects Of Guidance In One Hundred Seventy-Three Selected Iowa Public High Schools, Eldon Merle Gade Jan 1954

The Status Of Certain Aspects Of Guidance In One Hundred Seventy-Three Selected Iowa Public High Schools, Eldon Merle Gade

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Despite the fact that there has developed an increased awareness of the need for organized guidance in Iowa, far too little has been done about obtaining a comprehensive picture of the status of guidance in the public schools. Information I received from the State Supervisor of Guidance Education Department of Public Instruction, indicated that no comprehensive guidance study of a representative nature had ever been conducted in the public high schools of Iowa. The writer contends that this paucity of information about guidance in Iowa's public high schools constitutes a very serious impediment to the improvement of guidance. If Iowa …

The Changing Status Of The Country Superintendent Of Schools In Iowa, Dwight Gene Bode Jan 1954

The Changing Status Of The Country Superintendent Of Schools In Iowa, Dwight Gene Bode

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The county superintendent has long been recognized as part of the of the educational organization in the United States. The mixed ancestry of the office of county superintendent has resulted in a position whose functions and responsibilities differ widely from state to state.

The forty-eight states may be grouped into three general categories with reference to the county as a school unit: states having no county school organization, county-unit states, and states in which the county is the intermediate agency. There are nine states having no county school superintendent. Six of the states having no county superintendent are organized in …

Evolution Of The Level Lnterfluvial Divides On The Kansan Till Plain In Iowa And Missouri, W. D. Shrader, K. M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to discuss and evaluate various alternative hypotheses concerning the evolution of the level interfluvial divides on the Kansan Till plain in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. About four-fifths of the plain is dissected (3), but the undissected remnants have an almost flat surface. In contrast to this the undissected portion of the much younger surfaces of the Mankato and Cary till plains have an undulating topography with numerous closed depressions and isolated low knolls.

Severity Of Corn Seedling Disease In Iowa Soils, A. L. Hooker Jan 1953

Severity Of Corn Seedling Disease In Iowa Soils, A. L. Hooker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Poor seedling stands and root injury often occur when corn is planted in cold soils. Corn stands are reduced largely as a consequence of soil inhabiting fungi invading the germinating kernel resulting in the death of the young seedling before emergence. This group of fungi, largely Pythium species, may also incite a rotting of the seedling root system. This investigation concerns itself with measuring the severity of this corn seedling disease under certain greenhouse conditions m various Iowa soils of different types and cropping sequences.

Properties Of Two Profiles Of The Hayden Series, A. J. Green, F. F. Riecken Jan 1953

Properties Of Two Profiles Of The Hayden Series, A. J. Green, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The soils formed under forest vegetation from Late Wisconsin glacial till in Northcentral Iowa were classified, according to the summary by Brown (1936), chiefly with the Conover series. In the soil survey of Story County, similar soils were classified with the Ames and Lindley series according to Meldrum, Perfect, and Mogen (1941). The Ames series is a Planosol formed under forest vegetation and occurs on nearly level to slightly level areas. As the Lindley soils occur principally in the Kansan till area, they include soils with ferretto-like profiles. Thus, it seemed desirable to introduce a new series for most of …

Relationship Of Time Of Therapy To Teratogeny In Maternal Avitaminosis E, Dorothy Wei Cheng, Byron H. Thomas Jan 1953

Relationship Of Time Of Therapy To Teratogeny In Maternal Avitaminosis E, Dorothy Wei Cheng, Byron H. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The literature concerning teratogeny that is attributable to faulty nutrition of laboratory induced origin was reviewed in a previous publication (Thomas and Cheng: 1952). Any review of this subject leads to the conclusion that there are numerous conditions of nutritional insufficiency which produce congenital abnormalities. Until reported recently (Thomas and Cheng, 1952) none had been ascribed to avitaminosis E. The usual abnormality in reproduction which prevails among pregnant rats in an advanced state of avitaminosis E is fetal resorption. Adequate vitamin E therapy administered promiscuously is not sufficient to circumvent reproductive difficulties. Timing of therapy is an exceedingly important limiting …

Variations In Two Spring Indices Of Male Pheasant Populations, Story County, Lowa, Eugene D. Klonglan, Edward L. Kozicky

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The need for rapid indices to determine the spring population trends of ring-necked pheasants, Phasianus colchicus, on a statewide basis has resulted in the development of the crowing count (Kimball, 1949) and a male roadside count (Kozicky, 1952). Preliminary evidence (Kozicky, 1952) showed evidence that there was a higher degree of variation in areas of low population as compared to areas of high population (50 or more birds per section). Therefore, the intention of this study was to analyze the inherent variations in these two methods on secondary pheasant range in Iowa and compare them to findings in Winnebago …
