Hemagglutination Reactions Involving Plasmas And Erythrocytes Of Individual Chickens And Ducks, Elery R. Becker Jan 1952

Hemagglutination Reactions Involving Plasmas And Erythrocytes Of Individual Chickens And Ducks, Elery R. Becker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The writer (Becker, 1952) has recently reported on the varied responses among both chicks and ducklings to blood-induced infection with Plasmodium lophurae. The present paper is concerned with hemagglutination reactions involving the plasmas of individual chickens and duck erythrocytes, on the one hand, and the plasmas of individual ducks and chicken erythrocytes, on the other. The agglutinations observed were the result of exposing the erythrocytes to diluted plasmas containing natural or innate agglutinins; i.e., agglutinins not formed as the result of active immunization through exposure to the antigens of the erythrocytes.

Productivity Of The Cottontail Rabbit In Decatur County, Iowa, 1951, Fred H. Hubbard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Field research to obtain information on the productivity of the cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus mearnsii Allen) in Decatur County, Iowa, was conducted from March 27 to September 19, 1951. The 75-acre study area on a farm owned by Floyd Fleming is in Section 13 of Woodland Township, eight miles northwest of Lineville, Iowa.

The Myxosporidian Fauna Of Some Fresh Water And Marine Fishes, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1952

The Myxosporidian Fauna Of Some Fresh Water And Marine Fishes, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Myxosporidia are highly successful sporozoan parasites of fishes. Although a few species have been described from other cold-blooded vertebrates, fishes are the characteristic hosts and harbor over 90% of the known species. In all localities in which a survey has been undertaken the Myxosporidia have proved to be common. This is equally true of fresh water and marine habitats. Although each species inhabits a particular host organ, the group as a whole have been recovered from the lumina or the tissues of nearly every organ in the body cavity, as well as the muscular, skeletal and nervous tissues and the …

Seeding Experiments On Highway Backslopes, Robert L. Mcdill Jan 1952

Seeding Experiments On Highway Backslopes, Robert L. Mcdill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Construction methods required to build modern highways lay bare extensive areas along the rights-of-way. These areas were previously left in an ungraded condition and no effort was made to establish a vegetative cover. Stands of soil-binding plants became established slowly by natural means; therefore these areas were unprotected and subject to costly and unsightly erosion. To prevent erosion and to facilitate the early establishment of a protective cover, present construction methods include grading and seeding these areas, mulching foreslopes and backslopes, and sodding of critical waterways. Stand establishment on such areas is more difficult than on areas with topsoil in …

Increasing The Retention Of Nitrogen In Albino Rats Through Vitamin B12 Administration, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas Jan 1952

Increasing The Retention Of Nitrogen In Albino Rats Through Vitamin B12 Administration, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The growth promoting activity of vitamin B12 in rats has been demonstrated by many workers. Earliest among them was Emerson (1949) who showed that the retarding effect of thyroid powder when given to rats was counteracted by oral administration or subcutaneous injection of vitamin B12. Since 1949 many others have demonstrated the beneficial effect of B12 in augmenting growth in the young of several mammalian and avian species. Bioassay procedures for the estimation of vitamin BB are based on the capacity of B12 to stimulate growth. Cheng and Thomas (1950) showed that not only …

X-Ray Study Of The Cyclohexaamylose-Lodine Complex, Williams J. James, Dexter French Jan 1952

X-Ray Study Of The Cyclohexaamylose-Lodine Complex, Williams J. James, Dexter French

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The action of Bacillus macerans upon starch solutions has led to the isolation of crystalline dextrins by F. Schardinger (1). They are chemically homogenous and react readily with iodine to form both brown and blue colored complexes analogous to the starch-iodine complex. The Schardinger dextrins have been shown to be cyclic (2) and made up entirely of glucose residues bonded by a- 1, 4 - glucosidic linkages as in amylose. One of these, cyclohexaamylose (Schardinger's a- dextrin), containing as the name implies, six glucose units, reacts with iodide-free iodine in aqueous solution to form a stable crystalline complex. X-ray investigations …

Presidential Address: The Scientist Meets The Robots, P. S. Helmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most of us have at hand a simple analogue computer like a sliderule, or a digital computer like an adding machine or a desk calculator. But what can a scientist do when his computations become too involved for these devices? We have all read accounts of the Electronic Numerical Integrator ·and Computer, or Eniac (2, 3) built at the Moore School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and now located at Aberdeen. This giant occupies 1000 square feet of floor space and contains 18000 vacuum tubes, 1500 relays, and has an accumulator, multiplier, divider, square rooter, a function table, …

The Galactan Series Of Oligosaccharides, Gene M. Wild, Dexter French Jan 1952

The Galactan Series Of Oligosaccharides, Gene M. Wild, Dexter French

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In most biochemistry text books, stachyose is given as the classic example for a tetrasaccharide. Some books list for a pentasaccharide, verbascose. Stachyose was first described in 1890 by von Planta and Schulze (1), who first isolated it and crystallized it from the rhizomes of Stachys tuberifera, the Japanese artichoke. They described it as a non-reducing trisaccharide, [a]D = + 148°, composed of fructose, glucose and galactose. In 1903, Tanret (2) established stachyose as a tetrasaccharide when he showed that it was identical with what he had named manneotetrose from ash manna (3).

Behavior Associated With Age And Audiogenic Seizures In An Inbred Strain Of Mice, Wayne C. Bruce Jan 1952

Behavior Associated With Age And Audiogenic Seizures In An Inbred Strain Of Mice, Wayne C. Bruce

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Behavior disorders or so-called "experimental neuroses" have been observed by many investigators in a variety of species. Finger1 indicates that convulsive behavior has been studied experimentally in such mammals as the cat, dog, mouse, rabbit and pig. Hall and Martin2 refer to behavior disorders in the chimpanzee and rat. So far as is known only rats and mice have been found susceptible to audiogenic seizures. It has been found that abnormal behavior may be elicited by a variety of stimuli such as conflict, sound, electric shock, drugs, and ·dietary deficiency. Although the literature appears to indicate that a …

The Annual Contribution Of Meteoritic Dust To The Mass Of The Earth, Warren J. Thomsen Jan 1952

The Annual Contribution Of Meteoritic Dust To The Mass Of The Earth, Warren J. Thomsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Meteoritic dust, material of extra-terrestrial origin, has been identified in two principal forms: spherical particles and irregular, angular particles. Proof of the extra-terrestrial origin of the spherical particles is by chemical analysis, from the fact that their formation cannot be attributed to any known natural terrestrial cause2, by the tendency to obtain higher counts of spherical particles after known meteor showers, and by the occurrence of spherical particles at all times of the year in several widespread localities. The diameters of the particles observed range from about 0.005 mm. up to around 0.2 mm.

A Simpler Quantitative Method For The Determination Of Potassium In Tissues, Joab Klapp Aronson Jan 1952

A Simpler Quantitative Method For The Determination Of Potassium In Tissues, Joab Klapp Aronson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For some time past this writer has been interested in the potassium content of muscle. When this interest was first aroused he became aware of the need for a satisfactory method for determining quantitatively the amounts of potassium in a given muscle. So there ensued a search of the literature. This yielded three fundamental methods, each of which had its advantages and disadvantages. The Perchlorate and the Chloroplatinate methods were not used because of the technical difficulties presented by them. Jacobs and Hoffman (1931) had used the Cobaltinitrite methods with muscle and had obtained good results. So their method was …

The Production Of Ring-Necked Pheasants In Winnebago County, Lowa, E. L. Kozicky, G. O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall of 1935, the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit inaugurated field investigations on the ring-necked pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, on the Winnebago Research Area, sections 9-12, 13-16, and 21-24, Eden Township, Winnebago County. Early investigations (Green, 1938) were centered around winter mortality of pheasants and the improvement of habitat to alleviate winter losses. In 1939-41 intensive investigations were shifted to the nesting and production of the ring-necked pheasant on a 1520-acre plot lying within sections 13, 14, 15, 23 and 24 (Baskett, 1947). Although the pheasants were increasing in numbers during 1939 and 1940, in 1941 and accelerated …

Vitamin B12 Content Of Kidneys As Determined By Different Bioassay Procedures, Edmund Wei-Kuang Cheng, Byron H. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The existence of vitamin B12, often designated the antipernicious anemia or animal protein factor, as another member of the expanding family of vitamins is well established. As implied from its nomenclature, it belongs to the water soluble B-vitamins, but unlike most other vitamins in this group its chemical structure is unknown. Its nutritional importance to man, his monogastric farm animals and his poultry is recognized. For the present, at least, the supply consists primarily of concentrates. It is not to be inferred that crystalline B12 is unavailable. On the contrary, however, the supply is very limited and …
