Conscious And Automatic Processing Of Semantic And Acoustic Attributes By Mildly Mentally Retarded And Nonretarded Young Adults., John Thomas Sandy

Nonretarded and mentally retarded individuals, 16 to 20 years old, served as subjects in two experiments which tested the effects of semantic and acoustic word attributes. In the conscious processing task, one group rated each stimulus word as "good" or "bad" (incidental semantic task), another group formed rhyme (incidental acoustic group) and a third group was given no processing strategy. Subjects were tested using a standard recognition test and a rhyme recognition test, immediately and after 24 hours. Research done in the 1950's demonstrated that sleep was not a homogeneous state, in fact, that it consisted of periodically recur- ring stages (Aserinsky and Kleitman, 1953). One of these stages is readily identifiable due to concurrent physiological changes: elevated temperature, increased metabolic rates, electrical brain patterns similar to those in the arousal state, and rapid eye movements. This stage has been termed "rapid eye movement sleep" (REMS), or "paradoxical sleep" (PS) due to the unusual physiological changes. Annual Cycle Of Serum Gonadal Steroids And Serum Lipids Associated With Migration Of The Striped Mullet, Mugil Cephalus L., John Joseph Dindo

The striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, a valuable food resource for man, has been found in estuaries throughout the world. The present study examines changing physiological responses of the reproductive system in conjunction with the fall schooling and migratory periods.Serum gonadal steroids increased 8-10 fold from late September to the end of November for both sexes. The gonadal mass and Gonado-Somatic Index of Mugil cephalus rose rapidly in October and November returning to prespawning values in December. Fluctuations were observed in the serum total lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, throughout the study period. A decline in the summer followed by a sharp …

Recent research concerning the learning disabled child has indicated that attentional deficits and poor impulse control impair the learning process. The learning disabled child, experiencing developmental delays in his ability to sustain attention, may still be over inclusively attending to more aspects of the stimulus than is necessary. As a consequence, when expected to put forth an answer, the learning disabled child may respond impulsively. He may spew forth the first reasonable hypothesis that comes to mind, without thinking about its probable validity. The non-learning disabled child, on the other hand, has progressed to the phase of selective attention. He …

This thesis develops equations and techniques for modeling the grounding systems of power substations in detail. Equations are derived for calculating the self resistance of each component of the grounding system and for calculating the mutual resistances between each component of the grounding system. Next, techniques are developed for using these self and mutual resistances to obtain the input resistance of the grounding system. These equations and techniques are incorporated into a digital computer program, the results of which are compared with alternate calculation methods for several test cases.Since each component in the grounding system is modeled separately, the method …

Phenol. Phenol was discovered in 1834 as a byproduct of the coal gas industry and was first used to deodorize the sewers in England. Subsequently, in 1867, Joseph Lister introduced antiseptic surgery by using 5% phenol to disinfect operating room facilities and wounds (6, 25). Lister’s procedure was successful because 5% phenol causes disruption of the bacterial cell wall and precipitation of proteins. Even lower phenol concentrations can be lethal to bacteria by causing damage to the permeability barrier in the cell wall. This thesis focuses on interrole conflict and strategies for resolving this conflict in a sample of married working mothers. Specifically, it examines the relationship between these variables and sex role orientation and locus of control, two cognitive social learning person variables (Mischel, 1973), which represent well-learned patterns of perceiving and dealing with the environment. The study may increase the understanding of theoretical issues which surround interrole conflict and its resolution. It may also have practical value by suggesting solutions for problems associated with a current social phenomenon, i.e., the prevalence of working mothers in today's society.

As a result of the research described in this thesis, programs for the analysis of nuclear data now function on both the Physics Department’s PRIME computer and the University of Alabama in Birmingham’s SIGMA VII computer located in the Ziegler Research Building. These programs are: SAMPO—a program for peak analysis, BEND—a program to determine the best fit to a functional form, GATEPULL—a program to determine the sequence of a gamma with another gamma or an electron in the decay of a specific radionuclide, and DRAW—a program to produce neat Zetaplot histograms of nuclear data. The transmission of large bulk power over a great distance is being achieved economically at the 500 KV level by many major electric utilities. This is partially attributed to a station design which maximizes system reliability. Considerations of the causes of system disturbances and the roles of station design in minimizing their effects is discussed.
