Experiential Moral Learning., Jo Ann Freiberg

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this work is twofold. The first purpose is to introduce affective means, specifically dramatics, through which programs in moral education can be expanded and made more useful by fostering greater moral awareness. The second purpose is to describe and analyze a pilot study in which these additional skills were employed.

Some Correlates Of Satisfaction In Retirement., Diane Janell Clark Jan 1978

Some Correlates Of Satisfaction In Retirement., Diane Janell Clark

All ETDs from UAB

In 1960, there were 16 million persons over age 65. At present, there are 23 million persons over age 65, and about 38%, or 8.7 million, of those are over age 75. It is projected that by the year 2000, 43% of the aged will be over age 75. Only 21% of the men over 65 are employed as compared to 45% in 1960 (Benedict, 1978). The implications of the preceding statistics are alarming.

Analysis Of Large Synchronous Motors Used In Hydro Pump Storage Plants., Douglas Jay Shelton Jan 1978

Analysis Of Large Synchronous Motors Used In Hydro Pump Storage Plants., Douglas Jay Shelton

All ETDs from UAB

During the past ten years, a widespread interest in pump storage peaking plants has developed in the United States. In particular during the past few years, The Southern Company has become very interested in this peaking method having one plant under construction and several others being studied. This thesis develops several computer programs for analysis of large synchronous motors used in hydro pump storage plants. First, a mathematical model of the power system and the pump motor is developed and the results presented. Next, the effect a synchronous condenser has on the starting voltage dip is investigated. Finally, the period …

Silo Analysis And Design., Sukumar Saha Jan 1978

Silo Analysis And Design., Sukumar Saha

All ETDs from UAB

The American Concrete Institute Committee 313 on "Bin Wall Design and Construction" introduced a comprehensive recommended design procedure on silo design in 1968. The Committee recommended using Janssen's formula (1) for static pressure calculations on silo walls. The procedure has been described in detail under "Design Procedures" in Chapter 2. This Committee's recommendations were highly criticized because much higher pressures had been measured than those predicted by Janssen's static pressure formula.

The behavior of man is to a large extent governed by the information received about the environment through the visual system. Since in the human retina, the greatest density of photoreceptors is located at the fovea, the best spatial resolution is obtained when the image of an object is focused upon the fovea.

Interaction Between City Managers And City Councils., Ron Carlee Jan 1978

Interaction Between City Managers And City Councils., Ron Carlee

All ETDs from UAB

Most studies about city managers begin with an ominous statement on how the future of America's cities hinges on city managers. One author, for instance, refers to them as "central participants in the efforts to improve and enrich life in communities large and small, and in the struggle to cure the festering social ills which generate communal decay" (Banovetz, 1971).

In its 1967 report, the Task Force on Juvenile Delinquency and Youth Crime of the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice called juvenile crime "the single most pressing and threatening aspect of the crime problem in the United States." There is little evidence that the magnitude of the problem has dissipated in the succeeding ten years.

The Hormonal Basis For The Reproductive Cycle In Reptiles, With Emphasis On Lizards., Robert Arlen Holmes Ii

All ETDs from UAB

In its adaptation to a particular ecological niche, every species of animal has attained various adjustments in the timing of its reproductive efforts and in the number of offspring produced. This is especially true among reptiles, who have utilized a diversity of reproductive "strategies" while occupying many ecological habitats.

The Relation Between Mayoral Authority And The Quality Of The Life In U.S. Cities., William E. Baker

All ETDs from UAB

The plethora of problems identified as the urban crisis has been a primary concern in United States domestic affairs since the early sixties. During this time national leadership has responded by offering broad programs channeling large subsidies to the cities.

Behavior Of Solutions Of Second Order Difference Equations., Yvonne Marie Brakefield

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this paper is to consider the difference equation together with several theorems concerning the behavior of solutions to second order differential equations. We attempt to show that some of the results carry over to the above mentioned difference equation.

The Establishment Of Executive Protection Systems Within The Private Sector., Joe Bevan Flynn Jan 1978

The Establishment Of Executive Protection Systems Within The Private Sector., Joe Bevan Flynn

All ETDs from UAB

There exists within our society a propensity for violence which grows more alarming with each passing year. A combination of the availability of weapons, the sociological aggrandizement of immediate actions, and constitutionally guaranteed individual freedoms have created conditions alimentative of this violence.

Integrated Health Planning As Viewed By Comprehensive And Mental Health Planners., Jeanie Elizabeth Tharpe Jan 1978

Integrated Health Planning As Viewed By Comprehensive And Mental Health Planners., Jeanie Elizabeth Tharpe

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study is to examine the different viewpoints of comprehensive and mental health planners toward the integration of health planning. With the adoption of the National Health Planning and Resources Development Act of 1974, P.L. 93-641, it was assumed that health providers and consumers would work together to fulfill the purposes of the Act by creating a comprehensive health care delivery system. This included the coordination of the planning and service delivery aspects of both physical and mental health care. The extent of such coordination has in reality been rather limited.

Medical Jurisprudence Offerings In Curricula Of Medical Schools In Selected Southeastern United States., Lois Annette Gray Jan 1978

Medical Jurisprudence Offerings In Curricula Of Medical Schools In Selected Southeastern United States., Lois Annette Gray

All ETDs from UAB

Malpractice suits have been filed against physicians with increasing frequency in recent years. While many different reasons for the increase have been given, among those suggested is that physicians in general are not knowledgeable about medical jurisprudence to the degree they are able to prevent legal action being taken against them. If this is so, then there is an implication of a need to educate prospective and practicing physicians in the subject of medical jurisprudence.

A Comparison Of The Intrasession Effects Of Induced Anxiety And Anxiety Management Training On Physiological And Subjective Measures Of Arousal., Robbin Alline Williams Jan 1978

A Comparison Of The Intrasession Effects Of Induced Anxiety And Anxiety Management Training On Physiological And Subjective Measures Of Arousal., Robbin Alline Williams

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of the present study was to compare in one treatment session the effects of two behavior therapy techniques, Induced Anxiety and Anxiety Management Training, on both subjective and physiological measures of arousal. In addition, the effect of subjects' level of trait anxiety on response to the treatment techniques was evaluated. Subjects were 24 college students who fell within either the high or low trait anxious category. Results suggested no statistical difference between the two techniques in the amount of arousal or the degree of subsequent relaxation produced. A qualitative difference in response to the techniques was suggested. High …
