Assessment Of Uncertainty In Equivalent Sand Grain Roughness Methods, Chinmay P. Bhatt Jan 2007

Assessment Of Uncertainty In Equivalent Sand Grain Roughness Methods, Chinmay P. Bhatt

All ETDs from UAB

The equivalent sand-grain roughness model is an empirical model initiated by Schlichting for predicting skin friction and heat transfer for turbulent flows over rough surfaces. For the equivalent sand-grain roughness model, rough surfaces with various features are compared to data from Nikuradse concerning flow in pipes with varying sizes of sieved sand glued to wetted surface. Rough surfaces are assigned a value of equivalent sand-grain roughness height based on comparisons with Nikuradse’s fully rough data. Recent literature on the equivalent sand-grain roughness method has involved seeking correlations for equivalent sand-grain roughness height based on roughness metrics such as height, density …

The discussion concludes with recommendations and examples of specific smart growth techniques that local governments can adopt in pursuit of a smart growth planning agenda.

Effects Of Pulsed Electromagnetic Stimulation On Cultured Dermal Fibroblasts From Diabetic And Non-Diabetic Rats, Cara Rouse Davis Jan 2007

Effects Of Pulsed Electromagnetic Stimulation On Cultured Dermal Fibroblasts From Diabetic And Non-Diabetic Rats, Cara Rouse Davis

All ETDs from UAB

Diabetes is a disease affecting an increasing number people each year. The medical costs of patients with diabetes are substantial due to the many complications associated with the disease. Dermal wounds are one of these complications and are often very difficult to properly heal. Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMFs) have been introduced as a method by which to speed the healing of dermal wounds. In this study, a device (provided by Biomet/EBI, Parsippany, NJ) for supplying PEMFs in vitro was used to stimulate dermal fibroblasts, one of the key cells in wound healing. These cells were isolated from the genetically diabetic …

The People I Know, Max Everhart Jan 2007

The People I Know, Max Everhart

All ETDs from UAB

This is a collection—one personal essay and three short stories. In these works, I explore the concept of anger and identity and how these components create tension within the traditional immediate family framework. As I wrote, I continually asked myself a very specific question—a question that I wanted the thesis that follows to provide an answer for: can one maintain his or her identity while still fulfilling the responsibilities of being a father, son, husband, or wife? I begin this collection with an intensely personal essay entitled, “Name- Calling.” Set against the background of a fantastical assassination attempt on George …

Barrier Membranes For Ridge Augmentation - Is There An Optimal Pore Size?, Rajesh Gutta Jan 2007

Barrier Membranes For Ridge Augmentation - Is There An Optimal Pore Size?, Rajesh Gutta

All ETDs from UAB

Background: - Alveolar bone loss is often a sequelae of edentulism. However, several reconstruction procedures with bone grafts and barrier membranes are used to restore the lost bony architecture. The value of titanium mesh barriers has been shown to be reliable both in vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation procedures. However, there is a paucity of literature supporting the role of pore size of barrier membranes in preventing soft tissue ingrowth during ridge augmentation procedures. There are multiple reports describing a layer of soft tissue with varying thickness beneath the mesh and adhering to the newly regenerated bone. The objective of …

Metal-Tissue Interactions In Early Stage Biocorrosion Of Metallic Stents, Dina Halwani Jan 2007

Metal-Tissue Interactions In Early Stage Biocorrosion Of Metallic Stents, Dina Halwani

All ETDs from UAB

In-vivo corrosion of endovascular stents presents two main risks; release of toxic metallic ions and deterioration of the mechanical properties of the stents which may lead to fracture. Several studies have reported corrosion of nickel-titanium stent wires as well as stainless steel sternal wires. It has been suggested that when corrosion occurs on the surface of implants, an amount of metallic ions equivalent to the corroded volumes is released into surrounding tissue. The purpose of this study was to analyze explanted metallic stents for corrosion. The focus was on the detection of metallic ions released into surrounding vascular tissue as …

Visually Impaired Caregivers: Perspectives From Patient Focus Groups, Bethany Surrey Martinez Jan 2007

Visually Impaired Caregivers: Perspectives From Patient Focus Groups, Bethany Surrey Martinez

All ETDs from UAB

Purpose: We typically think of those with severe visual impairment as having to receive care or assistance for tasks in everyday living. However, with the aging of the population, more persons who are severely visually impaired are now caring for a spouse of significant other. Very little is known about visually impaired (VI) caregivers. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative study is to learn more about this vulnerable population of VI caregivers. Methods: Focus groups and one-on-one interviews were conducted with English speaking adults who were legally blind (U.S. definition) and served as informal caregiver of an adult family member. …

Regional Cerebral Blood Flow (Rcbf) Calculations In Awake, Behaving Non-Human Primates Using Continuous Arterial Spin Labeling (Casl) Techniques, Rajiv G. Menon

All ETDs from UAB

MRI can be employed to measure blood flow changes, which is an important in-dex of tissue health and function. One of the methods used to quantify perfusion is Ar-terial Spin Labeling (ASL) - a non-invasive method that uses arterial blood water as an endogenous contrast agent. The aim of this study was to quantify cerebral blood perfusion in awake, behaving non-human primates by using a class of techniques called Continuous Arterial Spin Labe-ling (CASL). This study involved the experimental design, setup and post-processing for the measurement of perfusion to facilitate validation studies in animals and compare them with existing perfusion …

Using Genetic Admixture And Lipo Protein Lipase Polymorphisms To Explain Variations In Plasma Triglycerides And High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol In Premenopauasal African And European American Females, Nihal Omar Natour Jan 2007

Using Genetic Admixture And Lipo Protein Lipase Polymorphisms To Explain Variations In Plasma Triglycerides And High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol In Premenopauasal African And European American Females, Nihal Omar Natour

All ETDs from UAB

Although African Americans (AA) are well known to be more obese and more in-sulin resistant than European Americas (EA), several studies have shown that AA have lower plasma triglyceride (TG) and higher high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The reasons for these levels of TG and HDL-C are not understood, and scientists have suggested a role of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), a key regulator of TG rich lipoproteins me-tabolism that is also thought to indirectly affect HDL-C metabolism. To investigate the extent to which these observed differences in TG and HDL-C are due to genetic makeup, we investigated the role of genetic …

Numerical Study Of Turbulence Transition Models, Kshitij D. Neroorkar Jan 2007

Numerical Study Of Turbulence Transition Models, Kshitij D. Neroorkar

All ETDs from UAB

The transition of an attached boundary layer from laminar to turbulent greatly affects the performance of aerospace and turbomachinery devices. In the past, a wide range of methods have been employed for modeling this physical phenomenon, including the Stability theory, Direct Numerical Simulation, and numerous proposed modifications to the existing Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models. It is believed that the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes based models, of all the existing models, are easiest for coupling with production Computational Fluid Dynamics codes in order to achieve rapid, satisfactorily accurate estimates. There exists a huge body of literature on predicting turbulence transition using models based …

Development And Testing Of Feed - A Feedback Expert System For Ems Documentation, Devashish Saini Jan 2007

Development And Testing Of Feed - A Feedback Expert System For Ems Documentation, Devashish Saini

All ETDs from UAB

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are delivered in a chaotic, dynamic, unpre-dictable, and therefore error-prone environment. Deviations from protocol are common and some may be severe enough to cause harm to the patient. EMS personnel, like all healthcare providers, can benefit from feedback, continued education and medical over-sight. A Feedback Expert system for EMS Documentation (FEED) was developed for providing feedback to EMS personnel after the ambulance run is completed and docu-mented electronically. FEED’s knowledge base was derived from Alabama State EMS Protocols and discussions with two EMS faculty members from UAB School of Medi-cine. FEED is rule-based and uses confidence …

Surface Reproducibility Of Impression Materials, Amit Shah Jan 2007

Surface Reproducibility Of Impression Materials, Amit Shah

All ETDs from UAB

The inability to absorb or release moisture limits the ANSI/ADA specification 19 stainless steel mold from accurately mimicking tooth structure and oral conditions while evaluating in vitro detail reproduction of elastomeric impression materials. Moreover, studies utilizing this mold have been graduated at room temperature, not normal mouth temperature. Bovine teeth, being similar to human teeth in microstructure and composition, are the closest substitutes that can be used to evaluate surface detail reproducibility of impression materials. The objectives of this study were (1) to develop a new bovine in vitro test model at controlled temperature and humidity in order to simulate …

In Vitro Compressive Fracture Resistance Of The Human Maxillary First Premolar With Different Mod Cavity Design And Restorative Materials, Wen-Chou Wu Jan 2007

In Vitro Compressive Fracture Resistance Of The Human Maxillary First Premolar With Different Mod Cavity Design And Restorative Materials, Wen-Chou Wu

All ETDs from UAB

Cuspal failures of MOD (mesial-occlusal-distal) restored teeth have been constantly observed in clinic especially those restored with amalgam. As the pulpal depth and isthmus width of the preparation increases, the strength decreases. A number of studies have investigated the adhesive technique which is intended to increase the fracture resistance by bonding the tooth structure. The results of the studies are controversial because of the differences of research design among studies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fracture resistance of the human maxillary first premolar restored with condensable composite (Surefil, Dentsply) and CEREC 3D ProCAD leucite-reinforced ceramic inlays …

An Entropy-Based Measurement Framework For Component-Based Hierarchical Systems, Ozgur Aktunc Jan 2007

An Entropy-Based Measurement Framework For Component-Based Hierarchical Systems, Ozgur Aktunc

All ETDs from UAB

Component-based software systems are becoming larger and more complex. The quantification of these systems is possible through representation in a hierarchical structure with the use of software metrics. Metrics provide information about such features as complexity, design, quality, size, development time, effort, and cost. Entropy-based software metrics promise important improvements in measuring complexity, design quality, and information flow. The entropy-based measurement framework, the core of this dissertation, offers quantitative representation and decomposition processes to apply the entropy-based metrics that we developed: Design Information Content, Interaction Complexity, Interaction Coupling, and Interaction Cohesion. The objective is to achieve a hierarchical representation of …

Depressive Symptomatology And Suicide Attempts In Adolescents With Mobility Limitations, Ann I. Alriksson-Schmidt

All ETDs from UAB

Adolescents with mobility limitations may be at increased risk of certain adverse outcomes because of unique or exacerbated pre-existing challenges. The current study examined the relationships among mobility limitations, depressive symptomatology, and suicidal behaviors. Moreover, it was examined if pain and perceived social support mod-erated the relationships between severity of mobility limitations and the three outcome variables, and whether depressive symptomatology mediated the relationships between mobility limitations and suicidal behaviors. Secondary analyses of the AddHealth data set were performed. The sample was 49.18% female, 16.02% African-American, 65.46% Caucasian, 12.20% Hispanic, and 6.33% coded as Other. The mean age was 15.96 …

A Comparison Of Agent Paradigms For Resource Management In Distributed Sensor Networks, Anish Anthony Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Agent Paradigms For Resource Management In Distributed Sensor Networks, Anish Anthony

All ETDs from UAB

Management of power and other resources that effect field life is an important consideration in sensor networks. Sensing, data fusion, target tracking, and network resources are some of the factors that have to be effectively managed in order to improve the field life of an underwater distributed sensor network application. A hierarchical sensor network is considered in which the sensors report the range and bearing of the target to the cluster nodes. The cluster nodes then fuse data from the sensor nodes to generate a local estimate of the target position. The master node fuses data from the different cluster …

Monte Carlo Studies With Random Fuzzy Numbers, Areeg Abdalla Jan 2007

Monte Carlo Studies With Random Fuzzy Numbers, Areeg Abdalla

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis is devoted to solve fuzzy optimization problems using Monte Carlo methods. In the ¯rst four chapters, we are ¯nding a fuzzy function that best ex- plains the fuzzy data. We study di®erent models; linear, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic. To ¯nd the best model that explains some data, we look for the one that minimizes some error measure. We use several popular error measures. Also, we discuss and compare our results with previous published results. Then we study a fuzzy optimization problem in queuing theory where it is used to model a web site. The variables are a mix …
