A Phenomenological Study Of The Impact Of National Board For Professional Teaching Standards On Early Childhood Teachers, Lesley E. Sheek

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to explore the professional experience of Nationally Board certified teachers as they planned for and taught students after attaining National Board certification. A qualitative, phenomenological methodology (Bogdan & Biklin, 1998; Meloy, 1994; Moustakas, 1994) was used in this study. For this study 10 early childhood generalist and middle childhood generalist Alabama Nationally Board certified teachers were interviewed. Using a three-interview process (Seidman, 1998), narrative information was gathered. Transcripts from each interview were analyzed and coded according to the emerging themes. Six major themes emerged from the interviews with the participants: teaching experiences, National Board …

A Grounded Theory Study: Hispanic Adolescents' Experience Of Being Overweight, Wilma Powell Stuart Jan 2007

A Grounded Theory Study: Hispanic Adolescents' Experience Of Being Overweight, Wilma Powell Stuart

All ETDs from UAB

The number of overweight adolescents worldwide has continued to increase over the past several decades. Intervention studies for weight management with overweight adolescents are challenged by high rates of attrition and have failed to achieve sustained outcomes. Hispanic adolescents have a higher risk of being overweight than their African American and White peers do. However, Hispanic overweight adolescents have been poorly represented in intervention studies with overweight adolescents. The factors that influence the Hispanic overweight adolescents’ perceptions of weight and weight loss management are not known. This qualitative study used ground theory methodology to identify the factors that influence perceptions …

The Characterization Of The Subcellular Localization Of Bile Acid Coa: N-Acyltransferase, Nathan Allen Styles Jan 2007

The Characterization Of The Subcellular Localization Of Bile Acid Coa: N-Acyltransferase, Nathan Allen Styles

All ETDs from UAB

The liver plays a central role in metabolism. It controls protein metabolism through deamination and transamination of amino acids, removal of ammonia through urea synthesis, synthesis of non-essential amino acids and synthesis of the majority of plasma proteins such as albumin. The liver regulates blood glucose levels through glyconeogenesis and glyconeolysis of glycogen, as well as gluconeogenesis from amino acids. It regulates fat metabolism through oxidation of triglycerides and fatty acids, as well as synthesis of cholesterol, lipoproteins, and phospholipids. Furthermore, the liver is the only site of formation of bile acids and their conjugates, physiologically important compounds that solubilize …

Bacillus Anthracis Spore-Host Interactions, Melissa K. Swiecki Jan 2007

Bacillus Anthracis Spore-Host Interactions, Melissa K. Swiecki

All ETDs from UAB

The use of Bacillus anthracis as a bioweapon depends on the dispersal of its spores into the environment, entrance into the body, spore uptake by human host cells, germination of the spores in the host and the pathological consequences of the virulence factors produced by the vegetative cells. Prior to 2001, very little was known about the mechanisms of spore entry into the host, including targeting cell types at airway, digestive and skin surfaces, potential spore receptors on these cells and spore encounters with cellular and humoral elements of the innate and adaptive immune systems. To this end, we have …

Relaxation Rate-Based Magnetic Resonance Imaging Quantification Of Myocardial Infarction, Pal Suranyi Jan 2007

Relaxation Rate-Based Magnetic Resonance Imaging Quantification Of Myocardial Infarction, Pal Suranyi

All ETDs from UAB

Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of mortality in western societies. Treatment needs to be tailored for each individual, which requires accurate assessment of the underlying pathology. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a relatively young modality in the field of cardiovascular imaging, and boasts with the lack of harmful radiation, excellent soft tissue contrast, and high spatial-temporal resolution. The very foundation of the concept of MRI was the finding that pathology causes changes in the relaxation rates of tissues. Measurement of relaxation rates is more time consuming than generating simple signal intensity images weighted by the longitudinal or transverse …

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between physical, mental and spiritual health. An additional purpose was to determine if the practice of aikido was associated with measurable levels of somatic symptoms, perceived stress, anxiety and spirituality. Measurement instruments included Cohen’s 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Spielberger’s 20-item Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI), the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), and the 16-item Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale (DSES). A cross-sectional research design was utilized in this study to test the following hypotheses: 1) After controlling for demographic variables, daily spiritual experience will explain variability in perceived stress, anxiety and somatic symptoms, …

Writing To Change The World In An Inner-City Kindergarten Classroom, Toni Taylor

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this qualitative study was to document the evolution of critical literacy and transformational writing in an inner-city kindergarten classroom in a mid-sized city located in the southeastern United States. This research involved 19 kindergarten students who were investigated in the naturalistic setting of routine instruction. Social issue texts were read aloud to students. After discussions of the texts, students responded to literature by creating exhibits, establishing a lost and found service for the school, helping peers and family cope with death, and partnering with the community nursing home. Throughout the study, audio tapes of student’s conversations and …

Genetic And Epigenetic Regulation Of Dihydropyrimidinase And Beta-Ureidopropionase In Individuals With Altered Uracil Catabolism And Normal Dihydro Pyrimidine Dehydrogenase Enzyme Activity, Holly Reed Thomas Jan 2007

Genetic And Epigenetic Regulation Of Dihydropyrimidinase And Beta-Ureidopropionase In Individuals With Altered Uracil Catabolism And Normal Dihydro Pyrimidine Dehydrogenase Enzyme Activity, Holly Reed Thomas

All ETDs from UAB

There remain a number of patients presenting with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) toxicity despite normal dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) enzyme activity, suggesting possible deficiencies in the two enzymes downstream of DPD in the uracil catabolic pathway: dihydropyrimidinase (DHP), encoded by the DPYS gene, or β-ureidopropionase (BUP-1), encoded by the UPB1 gene. Unlike DPD, which is expressed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), DHP and BUP-1 enzyme activity is detected in only the liver and kidney, thus requiring an invasive biopsy for determination of activity. This dissertation, therefore, focuses on the role of the genetic and epigenetic regulation of DPYS and UPB1. The genetic …

Perceived Stress, Pain Coping Strategies, Pain Interference, And Social Support: Mediators And M Oderators Of Depression In A Spinal Cord Injury Sample With Chronic Pain, Michael W. Wilson

All ETDs from UAB

Chronic pain and depression are frequently co-reported secondary complications following spinal cord injury (SCI) that impact multiple psychosocial domains. This study investigated the contribution of pain intensity, perceived stress, pain coping strategies, pain interference, and social support in depression and sought to identify mediator and moderator effects in the pain-depression relationship among persons with chronic SCI pain. Perceived stress, pain coping strategies, and pain interference were proposed as likely mediators of pain intensity and depression. Different types of social support were proposed as likely moderators of pain intensity and depression. The SCI sample consisted of 60 people with chronic pain …

Component-Based Language Implementation With Object-Oriented Syntax And Aspect-Oriented Semantics, Xiaoqing Wu Jan 2007

Component-Based Language Implementation With Object-Oriented Syntax And Aspect-Oriented Semantics, Xiaoqing Wu

All ETDs from UAB

Providing proper modularity is one of the major challenges in software development. In the context of programming language implementation, two key factors impede the modularization process in a compiler system: First, the parser, as the core of the language implementation, usually is specified in a non-decomposable style such that it must be built as a whole regardless of the complexity of the grammar. This usually yields poor comprehensibility, reduced changeability, limited reusability, and hampers independent development of the language implementation. Second, the interconnected nature of syntax and semantic analysis of a language propels the compiler implementation to have each phase …

Grammar-Driven Generation Of Domain-Specific Language Testing Tools Using Aspects, Hui Wu Jan 2007

Grammar-Driven Generation Of Domain-Specific Language Testing Tools Using Aspects, Hui Wu

All ETDs from UAB

Domain-specific languages (DSLs) assist a software developer (or end-user) in writing a program using idioms that are similar to the abstractions found in a specific problem domain. Testing tool support for DSLs is lacking when compared to the capabilities provided for standard general-purpose languages (GPLs), such as Java and C++. For example, support for debugging and unit testing a program written in a DSL is often non-existent. The lack of a debugger and unit test engine at the proper abstraction level limits an end-user‟s ability to discover and locate faults in a DSL program. This dissertation describes a grammar-driven technique …
