Accurate size information on a living heart is essential for an in-depth study of its cardiac function. A review of the literature since the turn of the century reveals the great amount of effort that has been expended in the search for better ways to measure heart size. Starling’s law relates energy of contraction to the initial length of the cardiac muscle fiber. To apply this law directly requires some measure of fiber length. The volume of the ventricular cavity is a function of this fiber length and thus can provide such a measure. For this reason many investigators have …

Micrograin superplasticity is that property of some metals to elongate many times their original lengths during deformation at elevated temperatures. Micrograin superplasticity is exhibited during deformation at constant temperature by metals having a fine grain structure and is to be distinguished from transformation superplasticity which is exhibited by metals which are repeatedly cycled through their allotropic transformation temperatures during straining.

The development of the problem of vehicle speed regulation and vehicle speed monitoring has indicated a need for an instrument which will provide this information. The cost and complexity of existing equipment which will perform this service places these instruments out of reach of the average motorist. This thesis defines this need and presents a design which will fulfill the need.

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is known to be a good ligand towards the formation of DMSO-complexed compounds. This work is concerned with the evaluation of the magnetic and kinetic properties of these compounds in DMSO solution. DMSO-complexed compounds of the transition metal ions, Cu(II), Ni (II), Co (II), Fe (II), Mn (II), Fe (III), and Cr(III) were studied. From the nmr spectra of these compounds, it is noted that the peak of the methyl proton shifts downfield with respect to that of the pure DMSO. The electron spin-nuclear spin coupling constants, An, were calculated to be all positive in sign. Unpaired electrons must …
