The relationships among 15 morphometric measurements in 219 aliquots of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were examined with respect to sexual dimorphism. The ratio of females to males was determined as 1:5.1 and gonadosomatic indices (%) were found for males (2.13 ± 0.86) and females (3.63 ± 1.18). There were 4 morphometric characteristics that differed between genders: ventral margin of cleithrum (VMC), postanal fin length (post-AFL), postdorsal fin length (post-DFL), and preanal fin length (pre-AFL). Although there were significant differences between morphometric characteristics (post-AFL, post-DFL, pre-AFL) and total length, no significant differences were found in the VMC. Length-weight relationships (LWRs) of 16,842 specimens of fish caught in the Bulgarian Black Sea waters, covering 9 families, 10 genera, and 10 species, were studied. Spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias L.), thornback ray (Raja clavata L.), sprat (Sprattus sprattus L.), pontic shad (Alosa immaculata Eichwald), anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.), whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus Pallas), horse mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus Aleev), bonito (Sarda sarda Bloch), round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas), and turbot (Psetta maxima L.) were collected from May 2006 to December 2008. The levels of some heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) were determined in water, plankton, and fish (Liza aurata) collected from 5 sites in Lake Manzala. Metals in the water and fish exhibited a significant seasonal and regional variation, in which all metals attained their maximum value during summer, while the lowest levels were found during winter. The concentration of different metals in water, plankton, and fish tissues followed the same order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. Contributions To The Opiinae Fauna Of Turkey (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Ahmet Beyarslan, Maximilian Fischer

This study was carried out in order to determine the species of the subfamily Opiinae in Turkey. Between 1991 and 2008, malaise and light traps and sweeping nets were used to obtain adult specimens from various habitats in Turkey. A total of 116 species from 7 genera and 28 subgenera of the Opiinae were determined, and 45 of these species were new records for the Turkish fauna. The distribution of the species was evaluated taking into consideration the zoogeographic regions and phytogeographic provinces of Turkey.

We investigated the length distribution, sex ratio, sex inversion length, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age and length at first maturity of the common pandora inhabiting İzmir Bay. A total of 2654 common pandora were collected by trawl hauls of İzmir Bay (Turkey) between January 2002 and June 2007. The size of the samples ranged from 4.1 cm (0.95 g, February) to 27.8 cm (207.30 g, April) in total length. The samples were composed of 64.7% females, 5.1% males, 0.3% hermaphrodites, and 29.9% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.08. The age composition of the samples …

Some aspects of the reproductive biology of Garra rufa Heckel, 1843, a native cyprinid fish species from the Armand stream in Chaharmahal-o-Bakhtiari province, central Iran, were investigated by regular monthly collections throughout 1 year. A significant relationship between length and weight and the isometric growth pattern were observed in this fish. There were no significant differences in the total number of male and female specimens. The ovariole development of laboratory-reared insecticide resistant and sensitive strains of the house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) under different photoperiod regimes was examined. Flies were reared under laboratory conditions of 75 ± 5% RH, 25 ± 1 °C and 0:24, 6:18, 12:12, and 18:6 h L:D photoperiods. Each day, 20 female flies were collected from a cohort of females that had emerged on the same date. Near Palmyra, in the Syrian Desert, 5 species of scorpions belonging to 2 families (Buthidae and Scorpionidae) were observed; Buthacus tadmorensis, Androctonus crassicauda, Leiurus quinquestriatus, Orthochirus scrobiculosus, and Scorpio maurus palmatus. B. tadmorensis accounted for 80.6% of the total number of recovered or observed scorpions, while O. scrobiculosus was the least common (1.4%). Pitfall traps proved to be more efficient at sampling (304 individuals) than checking under stones (57 individuals). Pitfall trapping results showed that scorpion abundance differed significantly between the 3 survey areas, while their abundance showed no significant difference among the 3 areas when employing the under-stone method. …

In recent years, Alata beach has been considered to be among 20 important sea turtle nesting areas in Turkey. In the 2003 nesting season, the carapacial scute variation of 1086 Chelonia mydas hatchlings (169 dead and 917 live) and 394 Caretta caretta hatchlings (74 dead and 320 live) from Alata beach in Mersin, Turkey, were examined within carapacial scute series and in carapacial scute pattern. Morphometrical, biological, ecological, and karyological data of 156 Myotis myotis and 149 M. blythii specimens collected from various provinces of Turkey between 1974 and 2007 were evaluated. Specimens from Turkish Thrace were referred to as M. m. myotis and the Mediterranean part as M. m. macrocephalicus. Specimens from the rest of Anatolia were assigned to an intermediate form. Mole rats have adapted to living underground and have a wide range chromosomal variation in Turkey, ranging between 2n = 36 and 2n = 60. This study was performed on the subterranean mole rats of the Nannospalax nehringi (Nehring, 1898), sampled around Çankırı and Çorum provinces in central Anatolia, and the karyotypes of 91 specimens across 38 localities were analyzed. The results of a karyological study on the hazel dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius trapezius from Turkey were presented in this study. Using conventional staining and G- and C-banding techniques, 10 specimens were cytogenetically studied. The G- and C-banding patterns of Turkish specimens of this subspecies were provided for the first time in this study. The karyotype was composed of 2n = 46, NF = 90 and NFa = 86. Thirty-five species from 7 genera of Tersilochinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) occur in Turkey. Of these, 20 species are new records for Turkish fauna. The general distribution and data on the biology of Turkish species are provided. Keys to all European genera and subgenera are given, with a short annotation on the taxonomy, distribution and biology of each genus.

The rotifer fauna of Iran is poorly known. This comprehensive study presents the results of an investigation of rotifers sampled in 51 freshwater sites of Tehran and neighboring provinces of Iran, from May 2006 to May 2007. Of the 115 species identified, 72 from 19 genera and 5 families are new for the fauna of Iran. Including the present records, the number of known Iranian rotifers has now reached 143. Omaloplia (Acarina) spireae spireae (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) was first detected as a pest of sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) in Oltu, Erzurum province, in the summer of 2007. Adult O. s. spireae appeared toward the middle of July, fed on H. rhamnoides for approximately 3 weeks, and then disappeared at the end of the first week of August. They fed on the upper surface of the leaves and consumed epidermis and parenchyma tissue, mostly by making longitudinal holes of various shapes and lengths. The distributional data of all known taxa of the Turkish species Spercheus were summarized. Spercheus emarginatus (Schaller) were recorded for the first time in Turkey and additional locality data were presented for Spercheus senegalensis Laporte. Diagnostic characters of the new record, photographs of their aedeagus and some morphological particulars were provided, as well as a key to the species of the genus from Turkey and adjacent areas.

The biodiversity of the Specially Protected Marine Area at Foca (Turkish Aegean Sea) was studied by scuba diving during October 2008. In the framework of this study the actinarian Aiptasia mutabilis (Gravenhorst, 1831) was found for the first time in Turkish waters. This new record extends the known geographical distribution of the species.

A Brief Review Of Morphological Variation In Natrix Tessellata In Israel: Between Sides, Among Individuals, Between Sexes, And Among Regions, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Tal Shapira

After introducing the distribution and biology of Natrix tessellata in Israel, on the southern edge of its range, we address its intraspecific variation from the literature and examination of 262 museum specimens. Head pholidosis showed no significant directional asymmetry, but asymmetry in infralabial plates was significantly correlated with frequency of injured tails. Variation in body size showed no clear seasonal growth, presumably due to climatic fluctuations. The variation in number of ventrals (in males, 159-173, mode 165) was not geographical. The waterbirds at 2 wetlands (Lakes Akşehir-Eber and Köyceğiz) in western Turkey were compared to determine their spatial and temporal distributions along with their habitat characteristics. The waterbirds were evaluated according to whether they were residents, winter migrants, summer migrants, or transit migrants and were assigned to foraging behavior groups. The study, conducted from May 2002 to December 2004, aimed to provide scientific baseline data about avifaunal richness, species of breeding birds, and threats that affect both bird species and ecosystems, and to support attempts to get official protection status for the Dalaman (Muğla, Turkey) wetlands. A total of 215 bird species were recorded using point counts throughout transect lines. The species' statuses were determined as follows: 56 residents, 78 summer visitors, 44 winter visitors, 22 passage migrants, and 15 undetermined. Of the 215 species, 93 (43%) were non-breeders. Thirty-eight Balkan green lizards, Lacerta trilineata, from Turkey were examined for helminths. Three species of Digenea, Plagiorchis elegans, Pleurogenoides medians, Brachylaemus sp. (metacercaria); 2 species of Cestoda, Oochoristica tuberculata and Mesocestoides sp. (tetrathyridium); and 6 species of Nematoda, Abbreviata abbreviata, Ascarops strongylina (larva in cysts), Falcaustra armenica, Oswaldocruzia filiformis, Skrjabinelazia hoffmanni, Skrjabinodon medinae, were found. Lacerta trilineata represents a new host record for each of the parasite species; Plagiorchis elegans, Brachylaemus sp., Oochoristica tuberculata, Mesocestoides sp., Abbreviata abbreviata, Ascarops strongylina (larva), Falcaustra armenica Skrjabinelazia hoffmanni, and Skrjabinodon medinae are reported from Turkey for the first time.

Current hand prostheses are mostly driven by electromyography (EMG) signal, and existing experiments have proved that multichannel EMG signal controls are not suitable due to early fatigue problems and high effort requirements to perform even simple activities. Therefore, in this study we present a new voice-controlled active hand prosthesis to perform several basic tasks. We first designed a novel multifingered prosthetic hand with the ability of picking up and releasing objects. In this work, the low frequency electromagnetic emission from permanent magnet synchronous motors is studied. The main objective is to provide a safety region for humans in the vicinity of these motors, especially as these motors are now being used widely in inhabited areas, where high flux densities are expected. In this study, a new proposed equivalent magnetic circuit is used to estimate the stray fields at the surface of the motor. In this paper, a new approach is developed, avoiding the correspondence problem caused by the difference in embodiment between imitator and demonstrator in imitation learning. In our work, the imitator is a fluidic system of dynamics totally different than the imitatee, which is a human performing hand gestures.
