To compare the resistance patterns of Escherichia coli strains reported to be isolated from urine cultures in published medical literature from Turkey in 1997-2001 and 2002-September 2007. Materials and methods: To find the published series, 3 national databases (Ulakbim Turkish Medical Literature database, http://www.turkishmedline.com, http://medline.pleksus.com.tr), and 2 international databases (Pubmed and Science Citation Index (SCI)) were searched. Results: Data for 25,577 E. coli strains were obtained from 53 articles (28 articles from 1997-2001, 25 from 2002-2007). To describe in detail the use of the T-REx^{TM} System (a tetracycline-regulated mammalian expression system; Invitrogen) for rapid, easy, and effective generation of stable C2C12 cell clones. Tetracycline-inducible stable cell lines are useful tools to study the function of various genes in different types of mammalian cells. However, the generation of stable cell lines is a time-consuming, technically difficult, and expensive process. In this study, the anatomical characteristics of the leaves of the Juniperus section of the Juniperus L. species [Juniperus drupacea Lab.; J. communis L. var. communis; J. communis var. saxatilis Pall.; J. oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus; and J. oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa (Sibth. & Sm.) Ball] are reported for those samples naturally distributed in Turkey. Microscopic views of the transverse and surface sections from the leaves of each species were examined and described. Differentiations were made between 3 species as a result of observations of the arrangement of the palisade parenchyma and the location of the secretory canals.

In the present study the phylogeny and the biogeography of the genus Lilium L. section Liriotypus Asch. et Graebn. were investigated and divergence times for the section Liriotypus were calculated. The study group covers Lilium species from Europe, the Italian and Balkan peninsulas, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. Plastid DNA sequence data (the trnC-petN intergenic spacer and petN gene) and nuclear DNA ITS sequence data were used to infer the phylogenetic history of the section Liriotypus. In this study, Pulsatilla Mill., which was considered a subgenus of the genus Anemone L. in Flora of Turkey, is accepted as a separate genus. Pulsatilla albana (Steven) Bercht. & J.Presl subsp. albana and P. violacea Rupr. subsp. violacea are declared as new records for the flora of Turkey. Anemone albana Steven subsp. armena (Boiss.) N.Busch, which was already known from Turkey, is accepted as a synonym of Pulsatilla violacea subsp. armena (Boiss.) Luferov. Cultivated alfalfa was selected from a complex taxonomic group called the Medicago sativa-falcata complex. The complex includes a number of diploid (2n = 2x = 16) and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 32) taxa. Prior information of ploidy is vital for the effective utilisation of genetic resources in alfalfa breeding programs. This study was conducted on the anatomical structure of the stems of 9 Salix L. (willow) species (9 taxa) growing in Ankara, Turkey. These taxa are S. triandra L. subsp. triandra, S. alba L., S. excelsa J.F.Gmel., S. fragilis L., S. babylonica L., S. caprea L., S. cinerea L., S. pseudomedemii E.Wolf, and S. amplexicaulis Bory & Chaub. Illustrations and photographs were obtained of microscopic views of cross sections from the stems of each taxon. The distribution and population size of 5 orchid species (Cephalanthera longifolia, Orchis simia, Platanthera bifolia, Dactylorhiza romana, and Ophrys scolopax) were studied in the southern Caucasus based on the individual numbers in a given area. The fruit set was recorded for the latter 3 species and compared in natural and control groups (pollinators prevented) for D. romana and O. scolopax. Alterations In Ion Levels Of Freshwater Fish Oreochromis Niloticus Following Acute And Chronic Exposures To Five Heavy Metals, Gülüzar Atli, Mustafa Canli

Freshwater fish, Oreochromis niloticus, were individually exposed to 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 µg/mL of Cu^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, Cr^{6+}, Ag^+, and Zn^{2+} for 96 h (acute) and 0.05 µg/mL concentrations of the same metals for 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 days (chronic). Following each period, metal accumulation and ion levels (Na^+, K^+, Ca^{+2}, and Mg^{+2}) were measured in the gills, kidneys, and muscles. Except for Ag^+, none of the metals killed the fish within 30 days. Silver killed all the fish within 16 days. Calotes versicolor specimens were divided into 2 groups of equal quantity (groups A and B). Group A was injected daily with 0.1 mL/50 g bw of vehicle. Group B was injected daily with 0.5 \mug/50 g bw of salmon calcitonin. Lizards in each group were sacrificed 2 h after the last injection on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 10th, and 15th day of treatment. A New Species Of Westralianus Boucek 1988 (Hymenoptera:Torymidae: Megastigminae) From Turkey, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar

A new species of the Australian genus Westralianus Boucek (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Torymidae) is described from Altınözü, Hatay, Turkey. Some new diagnostic characters of the genus are provided by inclusion of a second species in the genus. The new species, W. altinoezus n.sp., is compared with the type species, W. microstigma Boucek 1988. The new species was recorded as a parasitoid of caterpillars of an unknown species of Lepidoptera living in galls of Gymnosporangium confusum (Uredinales: Pucciniaceae) on shoots of Crataegus monogyna Jacq. A description of the new species is provided and its diagnostic characters are photographed.

Bark Beetle Fauna (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) Of The Coniferous Forests In The Mediterranean Region Of Western Turkey, With A New Record For Turkish Fauna, Oğuzhan Sarikaya, Mustafa Avci

Scolytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) species and their host plants of coniferous forests of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey were determined between 2006 and 2008. A total of 27 species of Scolytinae were collected from 59 different sites in Afyonkarahisar, Antalya, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta, and Muğla provinces. Hylastes angustatus (Herbst), H. linearis Erichson, Tomicus destruens (Wollaston), Hylurgus ligniperda (Fabricius), Pityogenes calcaratus (Eichhoff), P. pennidens Reitter, Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek), and O. suturalis (Gyllenhal) were recorded as new species for the Scolytinae fauna of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey. Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek) was recorded for the first time from Turkey.

Lecanid Rotifers (Rotifera: Monogononta: Lecanidae) From Iran, Esmat Khaleqsefat, Shahrokh Pashaei Rad, Reza Malekzadeh Viayeh

Rotifer diversity was investigated in 26 bodies of water in northwest Iran. Thirteen species of Lecanidae were identified, 6 of which are new records for Iran. The new records include Lecane flexilis (Gosse 1886), L. hamata (Stokes 1896), L. hastata (Murray 1913), L. lamellata (Daday 1893), L. papuana (Murray 1913), and L. punctata (Murray 1913). Drawings are provided, and both the seasonal and spatial distributions of the identified taxa are discussed. A brief comparison is made between the present study's results and those reported from Turkey.

Based on the study of specimens from the type locality, Kervillea (Kervillea) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918 is restored as a valid species and a valid type species of the genus Kervillea Bergevin, 1918. Hysteropterum parvissimum Dlabola, 1957 is synonymized with K. (K.) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918. K. (K.) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918 and Kervillea (Kervillea) placophora (Horvath, 1905) are redescribed and figured based on the examination of the materials from Turkey.

Four oribatid mites new to the Turkish fauna, namely Licneremaeus licnophorus (Michael, 1882), Moritzoppia (Moritzoppia) tridentata (Forsslund, 1942), Lauroppia maritima acuminata (Strenzke, 1951), and Banksinoma lanceolata lanceolata (Michael, 1885), collected from Bolu province, Turkey, are given with their drawings and SEM photographs. On the basis of the collected samples, their morphological features and distributions in the world are also presented.

Maximum swimming speed of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) and annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis) was estimated based on muscle twitch experiments. The maximum estimated speed of red mullet (mean length: 16.9 cm) was 3.14 m/s (18.6 bl/s) at 26 °C. At 20 °C the maximum estimated speed of annular sea bream (mean length: 11.5 cm) was 1.92 m/s (16.7 bl/s). Maximum swimming speed of annular sea bream decreased as the temperature decreased.

Growth, The Length-Weight Relationship, And Reproduction In Vimba (Vimba Vimba L. 1758) Sampled From An Oligo-Mesotrophic Lake In Northwest Anatolia (Turkey), Hacer Okgerman, Mahmut Elp, Cumhur H. Yardimci

The growth parameters and reproduction period in vimba (Vimba vimba L. 1758) sampled from Sapanca Lake were determined monthly between September 2003 and July 2004. The 335 vimba specimens caught ranged in age from 2^+ to 6^+ years, and the majority of the samples consisted of individuals of the 4^{+}-year-old age group. The length-weight relationship was estimated to be W = 0.0084 FL^{3.1797±0.0035} for males (r^2 = 0.94, P < 0.05) and W = 0.0089 FL^{3.1572±0.0033} for females (r^2 = 0.93, P < 0.05). Regression coefficients for sex were significant (t-test, P < 0.05). The slope (b) significantly differed (ANCOVA, P < 0.05) between months. The fact that the b values for male and female vimba specimens differed from 3.0 indicates that there was positive allometric growth. The von Bertalanffy equation was determined using Lt = 28.940 (1-exp {-0.123[t+2.193]}), \phi': 2.030, (r = 0.999) for males and Lt = 24.708 [1-exp {-0.205[t+1.464]}), \phi': 2.097, (r = 0.999) for females. The sex ratio was 1:1.86 (\chi^2; P < 0.05). The spawning period of vimba began at the end of April and continued until the beginning of July; the water temperature during this period was between 14.8 and 25.9 °C.

Distribution And Allometry Of The Knobby Swimcrab,Macropipus Tuberculatus (Roux, 1830) (Brachyura, Portunidae) In The Strait Of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea), Giandomenico Nardone, Sergio Ragonese

Distribution and biometric information for Macropipus tuberculatus of the Strait of Sicily were obtained via an experimental bottom trawl survey carried out in 2000. The species occurred with low frequency (20%) and abundance (365 specimens), showing a scattered spatial distribution, split in 2 preferential depth levels (90-160 m and 230-460 m). Males were larger and more abundant than females. The carapace length width relationship was allometric positive (b > 1), and the carapace length weight relationship was isometric (b = 3).

The red-wing tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens) is economically important as food. The current study investigated the limb and trunk characteristics in age-matched [year-of-hatch (yoh) 2004 and 2005], gender segregated birds, and determined differences in stride between cocks and hens. The locomotion trial was completed in a corridor of 0.6 × 2.36 m dimension. The girth was significantly higher in cocks than in hens, while body weight was slightly higher in hens. During the present study, 117 wild boars (Sus scrofa) were killed to examine their stomach contents in Islamabad, Pakistan. Stomach contents were found to be correlated with feeding sites, plant material, and the nature of food material and items consumed from both cultivated and noncultivated lands. Five species of aquatic Oligochaeta new for Montenegro were recorded from various types of fresh waters. Marionina argentea (Michaelsen, 1889) was reported from a subterranean stream. Propappus volki Michaelsen, 1916, Rhyacodrilus coccineus (Vejdovsky, 1876), and Cognettia sphagnetorum (Vejdovsky, 1877) were found in epigean streams. Haplotaxis gordioides (Hartmann, 1821) appeared in both subterranean and epigean streams. The list of aquatic oligochaetes from Montenegro now encompasses 39 species.

The Camponotus fauna of the Kaz Mountains was examined horizontally and vertically, from 175 to 1600 m a.s.l. Materials were collected from 20 different localities and 11 different habitats between 2001 and 2003. In all, 14 species belonging to 3 subgenera (Colobopsis Mayr, Myrmentoma Forel, and Tanaemyrmex Ashmead) were found. The hitherto unknown sexuals of C. candiotes Emery and C. ionius Emery are described for the first time.

An examination of benthic material collected from different depths (0-875 m) and habitats along the Turkish Levantine and Aegean seas between 1996 and 2008 has resulted in the identification of 819 scaphopod specimens, belonging to 10 species: Antalis dentalis (Linneaus, 1758), Antalis inaequicostata (Dautzenberg, 1891), Antalis panorma (Chenu, 1843), Antalis rossati (Caprotti, 1966), Antalis vulgaris (da Costa, 1778), Fustiaria rubescens (Deshayes, 1825), Entalina tetragona (Brocchi, 1814), Pulsellum lofotense (M. The rectal sac (Rs) is formed by enlargement of the rectal portion of the hindgut in Bombyx mori. The Rs consists of epithelium, connective tissue, and many rectal pads (Rps). Rps have a cortex and medulla. In the medulla 2-5 pyramidal epithelial cells synthesize proteinic secretory material (Ps), and then this substance localizes within epithelial cells and connective tissue. Fenoxycarb 0-ethyl N-(2-(4-pheoxyphenoxy)-ethyl) carbamate is the most potent juvenile hormone analogue (JHA) against a variety of insect species including the silkworm Bombyx mori. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the effects of this juvenile hormone on major hemolymph proteins of Bombyx mori during the fifth larval instar, by using fenoxycarb and clarifying the interactions between these proteins and the juvenile hormone. Topical applications of fenoxycarb to the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori were performed immediately after the fourth ecdysis (on day 0) and at the beginning of the prepupal period (on day 6).
