A period of stagnation in silver fir development has been recorded in all felled trees in selection forests of Serbia (233 trees on Mt. Goc and 451 trees on Mt. Tara). In the selection forests on Mt. Goc, the stagnation stage ranges between 40 and 330 years, but on Mt. Tara, it ranges from 15 to 185 years. It was concluded that the duration was caused not by the ecological and productivity potential (site class) of the soil for fir development, but primarily by the growth space, resulting from the application of single-tree selection or group selection systems. Tomato is one of the most widely produced and consumed vegetable crops worldwide. Plant breeders have usually focused on improvement of horticulturally important traits such as yield, fruit size, shape and colour. With increased attention on human health, however, plant breeders also consider the improvement of health-related traits of fruits and vegetables such as antioxidant characters. In the present study, genes controlling both health-related and horticulturally important traits were mapped in the tomato genome using 152 Lycopersicon hirsutum BC_2F_2 individuals. Antioxidant Properties Of Methanolic Extract From Inula Graveolens L., Adnan J. M. Al-Fartosy
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The aim of this study was to assess the possible antioxidant activities of 80% methanolic extract from the Inula graveolens L. plant. It was found that the methanolic extract has the highest content of phenolic (1.63%, calculated as gallic acid) and flavonoid (0.52%, calculated as quercetin) equivalents per 100 g of dry mass. The methanolic extract possesses strong antioxidant activity (64.28%) as well as strong reducing power (increasing as the extract concentration increases) and ferrous ion chelating (96%) abilities. Moreover, the methanolic extract shows the highest free radical-scavenging activities for superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical, reaching 93.43% and 91.38%, respectively.

The monooxovanadium(V) complex of composition [VO(OC_6H_3(NO_2)_2-2,4)_3] (I) was synthesized by the reaction of VOCl_3 with Me_3SiOC_6H_3(NO_2)_2-2,4 in toluene and characterised by elemental analyses, molar conductance, and IR, ^1H- and ^{13}C-NMR, and mass spectral studies. The reactions of (I) with alkali metal 2,4-dinitrophenoxides [MOC_6H_3(NO_2)_2-2,4] (M = Li, Na, K) yield complex salts of composition M[VO(OC_6H_3(NO_2)_2-2,4]_4 authenticated by physicochemical and IR spectral studies. Thermal behaviour of complexes was studied by TG and DTA techniques. The zooplankton community of Lake Küçükçekmece includes individuals from freshwater groups Rotifera and Cladocera, and also marine species Acartia clausi of the subclass Copepoda; Tintinnopsis nana, Favella sp. Jorgensen, 1924, and Strobilidium spiralis from the group Ciliata; Micronereis sp. Linnaeus, 1758 and Spio sp. Fabricius, 1785 from the class Polychaeta; Pleurobrachia pileus from the phylum Ctenophora; and Gammarus sp. Fabricius, 1775 from the order Amphipoda. Rotifera was the dominant group for each season studied. In autumn, dominant specimens included Bosmina longirostris, Spio sp. Here we report a new record for Neaylax salviae (Giraud, 1859) (Hymenoptera, Aylacini) on Salvia officinalis L. (Lamiaceae) in the inland Aegean region of Turkey. We give details on the geographical distribution and host. Neaylax salviae (Giraud, 1859) is a new record on the genus level for Turkish fauna.

Length distribution, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age, and length at first maturity of four-spotted goby inhabiting İzmir Bay were investigated. A total of 1696 four-spotted goby were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007. The size of the fish sampled ranged from 3.1 to 9.2 cm total length. The samples were composed of 31.1% females, 27.7% males, and 41.2% juvenile individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.89. The age of the fish ranged from 1 to 5 years. The length-weight relationship for both sexes of 21 fish species caught in Argolikos Gulf (central Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean), using a variety of fishing gear, was estimated for the first time. Fishing took place between August 2007 and August 2008, and the fishing gear used included gill and trammel nets, long lines, and beach seines from 58 inshore fishing vessels. Individuals caught by trammel nets were usually longer and heavier than those collected by other fishing gear. Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a gregarious synovigenic parasitoid that attacks late stage larvae of many important lepidopterous species. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the influence of 3 constant (18, 25, and 35 °C) and 1 alternating temperature (incubator programmed to vary daily between 18, 25, and 35 °C at 8 h intervals) on protein and lipid amounts of female and male parasitoids. Protein amounts of female parasitoids were highest when exposed to alternating temperature. Small mammal assemblages of Üçağızlı Cave, 2 from the early Upper Paleolithic and 1 from the Epipaleolithic, spanning a period from 41 to 17 kya, are described. The remains are referred to as Chionomys nivalis, Microtus guentheri, Apodemus mystacinus, Apodemus flavicollis, Apodemus witherbyi, Mus macedonicus, Mesocricetus brandti, Glirulus sp., Crocidura sp., Pipistrellus cf. kuhlii, and Myotis sp. The rodent fauna of Üçağızlı suggests the dominance of open country and rocky ground with a woodland component. There does not seem to have been any essential environmental changes during the deposition of these layers. However, the poor sample of the Epipaleolithic hampers …

In this study, skeletal muscle protein bands of Pelophylax ridibundus specimens from 31 populations inhabiting all geographic regions of Turkey and Pelophylax caralitanus specimens from the Isparta (Lake Eğirdir) population were compared using sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). In total, 270 adult (134 females, 136 males) P. ridibundus specimens and 12 adult (5 females, 7 males) P. caralitanus specimens were used in SDS-PAGE characterization. The first group (31 different populations of P. ridibundus) had 27 homologous protein bands whereas the second group (1 population of P. caralitanus from Lake Eğirdir) had 28 bands. Two species of the family Cheyletidae (Acari: Prostigmata), Cheletonella vespertilionis Womersley and Cheyletus kuznetzovi Bochkov and Khaustov, are given as new records for the Iranian fauna. This is also the first report of the genus Cheletonella Womersley from Iran.

This study reports, for the first time, an efficient in vitro plant regeneration protocol for Digitalis lamarckii Ivan. (dwarf foxglove) via direct shoot organogenesis. Two sets of experiments were carried out; the first compared different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), kinetin, thidiazuron (TDZ), and zeatin alone using leaf explants excised from in vitro germinated seedlings, while the second set tested the combinations of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) with BAP, kinetin, TDZ, and zeatin for shoot multiplication from the leaf explants, which were already cultured and developed numerous shoots during the first set of experiments. New Records In The Alien Flora Of Romania (Artemisia Argyi, A. Lavandulaefolia) And Europe (A. Lancea), Culita Sirbu, Adrian Oprea

Artemisia lancea Vaniot, A. argyi H.Lév. & Vaniot, and A. lavandulaefolia DC., all native from eastern Asia, are reported as new alien taxa from Romania. A. lancea has not been recorded so far in Europe, while A. argyi and A. lavandulaefolia are naturalised in the European part of the former USSR. All 3 species were collected in the Socola railway yard in northeastern Romania; the specimens were deposited in the IASI Herbarium, at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Iaşi. Their introduction was accidental, through the rail transport from the former USSR. The 3 species are perennial herbs, …

The objectives of this study were to estimate the narrow sense heritability of the examined characters and to find their linked simple sequence repeats (SSRs) using bulked segregant analysis (BSA) in rice (Oryza sativa L). F_{2:3} families of the cross between 'Mousa-Tarom' and '304' were used in an augmented design with 6 replications. Narrow sense heritability of panicle length and the culm number were low (0.84). The SSR primers RM16589 and RM17166 on chromosome 4 showed linkage with the gene(s) controlling culm length, plant height, leaf width, culm number, grain width, and grain shape. Food safety is of great importance to all involved in the food chain. The problem of pesticide residues is one of the concerns for the consumers. In the present study, 254 buffalo liver tissue samples were collected from 4 slaughterhouses and analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively for the presence of chlorpyrifos residues. The samples were processed by extraction with acetonitrile followed by sonication and liquid-liquid partition. The extracts were cleaned up by performing alumina column chromatography. To explore the feasibility of developing a new type of plantderived foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) oral vaccine, the plant seed-specific expression vector p7SBin438/VP1 carrying the VP1 gene of the FMDV strain O/China/99 was constructed and transformed into Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain GV3101. This strain was used for transformation of Arabidopsis thaliana via the floral-dip method. The kanamycin-resistant transgenic plants were selected, and the VP1 gene and protein expressions were confirmed by PCR and sandwich-ELISA, respectively. During October 2009, a suspected outbreak of infectious pancreatic necrosis, with typical signs and high mortality, was observed in cultured rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry (mean weight of 9 g) in a recirculating system in Fars Province, Iran. Tissue samples, including pyloric caeca as well as pancreatic tissues, liver, kidney, and spleen, were aseptically collected from 20 affected moribund fish for histopathological and molecular assays. Histopathologically, the exocrine pancreatic acinar cells exhibited the most notable pathology, including focal to extensive degeneration and coagulative necrosis with mononuclear inflammatory infiltrates. The aim of this study was to quantitate vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and estradiol-17\beta in follicular fluid (FF) and serum and to correlate the levels of these substances with oocyte maturation. A total of 19,679 adult ticks were collected from 443 cattle in 9 villages in the West Aegean region of Turkey over 2 years (June 2006-May 2008). Thirteen out of the 19,679 adult ticks were identified as Hyalomma rufipes (12 adult males and 1 female). The ticks were identified according to their characteristic dark coloured conscutum and scutum along with the presence of small to medium but uniform and numerous punctations. The protonation process of 1,2,4-triazoline-3-thiones (T3T) was studied in aqueous sulfuric acid using the UV method. Characteristic vector analysis (CVA) was used to reconstruct the experimentally obtained UV spectra, to overcome difficulties in calculating the protonation constants of T3T, and to separate the effect of protonation from the generalized medium effect. pK_{TH}+ values were calculated using the Hammett acidity function method, the Bunnett and Olsen method, and the excess acidity function method. The obtained values for m, \phi and m* were close to those characteristic for similar thio compounds, indicating that the protonation site in the molecule of T3T is …

Bis(salicylaldehyde)orthophenylenediamine (BSOPD) has been proposed as new analytical reagent for the direct spectrophotometric determination of chromium. It reacts with chromium(VI) in slightly acidic (0.1 -- 0.3 M H_2SO_4) micellar medium to form a yellow - orange chelate with a molar ratio 2:3. The most remarkable point of this method is that the molar absorptivities of the Cr^{VI} -- BSOPD complex formed in the presence of nonionic TritonX -- 100 surfactant are almost 10 times higher than the value observed in aqueous solution.
