Leveraging The Dialectical Theory In Case Study Analysis: Genzyme's Ethical Dilemma, Andrei Duta

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

This paper provides the theoretical framework for a case study that I share with students in my courses. The dialectical theory is used to analyze ethical conundrums pertaining to Genzyme, a successful bio-tech corporation based in Boston, Massachusetts that manufactures treatments for serious diseases such as kidney problems, immune diseases, and cancer. We discuss questions such as: is Genzyme acting unethically when averaging extremely high profit margins on drugs for rare diseases? Is the company taking advantage of the lack of pharmaceutical choices that patients have when addressing their ailments? The dialectical theory provides the framework and vocabulary for discussing, …

The Federal Mediation And Conciliation Service: A Partner In International Conflict Prevention, Andrea Strimling

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service ("FMCS"), an independent agency of the U.S. government with over a half-century of conflict management and institutional-development experience, is a valuable resource in U.S. efforts to prevent armed conflict and build the foundations for lasting security in the U.S. and around the world. Given the urgency and complexity of this challenge, the United States should identify, support, and leverage all appropriate resources for preventive diplomacy, including short-term operational prevention and long-term structural prevention. Through its International Program, FMCS has already made important contributions to both types of prevention, drawing on three strategic assets that …

Romancing Organizational Leadership: A Study Of The Relationship Between Personality, Maturity, National Culture, And Romance Of Leadership In A Multinational Organization, Vu Nguyen Tran

Theses and Dissertations

Romance of Leadership is a disposition to over-attribute organizational and societal outcomes to the actions of senior level leaders. The greater the magnitude of the outcome, the stronger the belief that leadership is the most significant driving force behind that outcome. Strong believers are found to be more susceptible to the emergence of transformational and despotic leadership. The tendency to romanticize leadership cannot be eliminated but needs to be understood, accounted for, and hopefully managed, by aspiring leaders. This study found that romance of leadership is a pervasive and durable phenomenon that is rooted in human personality, and shaped by …

An Exploration Of The Accreditation Self-Study Process From The Perspectives Of Organizational Effectiveness, Troy Lee Roland Jan 2011

An Exploration Of The Accreditation Self-Study Process From The Perspectives Of Organizational Effectiveness, Troy Lee Roland

Theses and Dissertations

A total of 22 sanctions were issued in 2009 for noncompliance of the accreditation standards by the Junior College Division of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The most common reason for these sanctions is not conducting program reviews. Another major cause is for not integrating organizational planning or using assessment results, and not correcting institutional deficiencies with governing boards. Yet, despite these warnings, many institutions continue to receive such sanctions. Models for organizational effectiveness could help institutions of higher education prepare for and become compliant with accreditation standards. This case study involved the development of an assessment …

Organizational Change Effectiveness A Case Study In Customer-Alignment Structures For Employee Engagement And Service Delivery, Emily C. Logan Jan 2011

Organizational Change Effectiveness A Case Study In Customer-Alignment Structures For Employee Engagement And Service Delivery, Emily C. Logan

Theses and Dissertations

Although organizational changes are common in business, few of these changes are decided based upon clearly defined organizational goals (Hilmer & Donaldson, 1996). Making structural changes may not be the best approach to improve performance, given that organizational changes are disruptive to the organization (Day, Lawson, & Leslie, 2003). Instead of following prevalent management fads, organizational leaders need to evaluate carefully any potential changes for their situation and objectives before embarking on a disruptive change. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of an organizational change in which the defined goals were to create more empowered employees …
