Exploring The Influence Of Academic Technology Professionals In Higher Education, Stephanie Glick
Exploring The Influence Of Academic Technology Professionals In Higher Education, Stephanie Glick
Theses and Dissertations
Academic Technology (AT) is a fast growing field that deserves attention given its dynamic nature and impact on educational practices. The field has evolved from information technology to concentrate on advancing technology to enhance teaching and learning. Yet, the field appears to be insufficiently mature or defined making it difficult for AT professionals to be categorized and characterized or to fully understand their changing roles. There is uncertainty as to the roles, responsibilities and positions of AT professionals both within and outside of the field. Research in this area is minimal and highlights the need for strategic action to support …
Impacts Of Expatriates' International Experience On Self-Identity, Mandy M. Chan
Impacts Of Expatriates' International Experience On Self-Identity, Mandy M. Chan
Theses and Dissertations
Expatriation is becoming an attractive career path for many people due to the global economic movement. People experience career transitions due to change of organization, locations, responsibilities, reporting structures, and work groups. Expatriates in particular experience more extreme changes because of challenges they encounter from language differences, geographical distance across countries, culture, habit, and life style. These changes influence people's perspective in seeing things, including their self-identity. The aim of this research was to explore the evolvement of expatriates' self-identity. A qualitative research design using reflexive narrative inquiry was employed. Seven current and former expatriates from Australia, Japan, Netherlands, United …
Characteristics Of Transformative Listening Enacted By Organization Development Practitioners, Marco Cassone
Characteristics Of Transformative Listening Enacted By Organization Development Practitioners, Marco Cassone
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the listening behaviors of organization development (OD) practitioners that result in client transformation. Interviews conducted with eleven OD consultants with extensive experience in executive coaching pointed to engaged, focused attention as a core characteristic of their listening. OD practitioners regularly use three primary listening approaches (active, empathetic, and expansive listening) to drive insight and help clients transform their perspectives. Practitioners subsequently use two secondary listening approaches (critical and reductive listening) to anchor insight into action and help clients transform their behavior. Transformative listening describes the repeating process of inquiry that blends primary and secondary listening approaches and …
Stress Relief In The Workplace, Jenny Gumm
Stress Relief In The Workplace, Jenny Gumm
Theses and Dissertations
The management of the psychological and physiological dimensions of stress can have significant effect on workplace productivity. Yet, stress as a universal human phenomenon is often downplayed or misunderstood by both employees and organizations. This study looked at the effects of stress on the workplace from both an individual and an organizational perspective. An exploratory mixed methods design was used to test the efficacy and potential benefits of providing employees with tools to help them better manage their stress. The three components of Hatha Yoga: breath, movement, and mediation were introduced on site to the employees of a small start-up …
Views Of Student Engagement Among Students And Faculty In Online Courses, Amy Elizabeth Berger
Views Of Student Engagement Among Students And Faculty In Online Courses, Amy Elizabeth Berger
Theses and Dissertations
As part of an effort to learn more about the technologies currently available to students, three executives in the online division of a private, not-for-profit four-year university requested a survey of students and faculty to learn more about the technologies to which they currently have access. Additionally, each of three executives wanted to better understand student and faculty views of student engagement in the division's online courses. To that end, research-based questions about student engagement levels were added to a survey about access to technology. This mixed-method non-experimental study collected data from students and faculty about which definition of student …
Leading Under Pressure, Coping Practices Of Executives: A Mixed Methods Study, Darlene Thomas
Leading Under Pressure, Coping Practices Of Executives: A Mixed Methods Study, Darlene Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Work-related stress continues is the largest contributor to the rise in insurance cost for most organizations (Dewe, O'Driscoll, & Cooper, 2010). The biopharmaceutical industry is no exception. Today's leaders must focus on efficiencies, cost reduction, and organization performance while restructuring the organization to do more with less, which can create tremendous stress. This research explored coping strategies practiced by executive leaders in the biopharmaceutical industry. The overarching research question was: How do senior leaders confronted by work pressure attempt to cope, and are the coping strategies practiced effective at reducing and deflecting stress in a way that doesn't adversely affect …
Rhetorical Judgments: Using Holistic Assessment To Improve The Quality Of Administrative Decisions, Roger J. Klurfeld, Steven Placek
Rhetorical Judgments: Using Holistic Assessment To Improve The Quality Of Administrative Decisions, Roger J. Klurfeld, Steven Placek
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
Federal, state, and local governments issue hundreds of thousands of administrative decisions annually. Considering the number of encounters the public has with administrative appeal agencies, administrative decisions may be the largest category of legal writing and reading interaction the public has with the legal system. Many of these agencies have identified writing quality - however they define it - as a priority in their strategic plans, but the overwhelming number of hearings and decisions, coupled with regulatory guidelines for timeliness, may subordinate this goal to other management priorities. Improving the quality of administrative decisions at these agencies presents a practical …
A Blueprint For Change, William D. Henderson
A Blueprint For Change, William D. Henderson
Pepperdine Law Review
This Article discusses the financial viability of law schools in the face of massive structural changes now occurring within the legal industry. It then offers a blueprint for change - a realistic way for law schools to retool themselves in an attempt to provide our students with high quality professional employment in a rapidly changing world. Because no institution can instantaneously reinvent itself, a key element of Professor Henderson's proposal is the 12% solution: approximately 12% of faculty members take the lead on building a competency-based curriculum that is designed to accelerate the development of valuable skills and behaviors prized …

Effects Of Improvisation Techniques In Leadership Development, Farnaz Tabaee
Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a pilot workshop applying a Holistic Improvisational Leadership Model as developed by the researcher and based on the latest improvisation research. The study employed a mixed methods design to gather qualitative and quantitative data for a descriptive evaluation of the pilot training workshop. …

The researcher used a qualitative research methodology to answer the following research questions. 1. Is the Contingency Model of the Initial Succession proposed by Rubenson and Gupta (1996) transferable to organizations of smaller size and lower revenues? 2. …

Leadership sets the tone and determines and shapes the organization. The more proficient individuals are in leadership and management skills, the more the organizations will thrive. Technical challenges have and will always be barriers, but competent leadership will always resolve those barriers. Throughout history there are individuals who have been praised for their leadership abilities. What can we learn from them? The purpose of this study was to determine the key leadership …

This study focused on understanding leadership development assignments and experiences of successful Japanese managers who are functioning in for-profit multi-national Western companies in the consumer products industry in Japan. A sequential explanatory mixed method design incorporating phenomenological interviews was used to first explore work-related strengths and developmental experiences and …

The Essential Leadership And Management Skills Of Mid-Level Managers In Non-Profit Organizations, Vicki L. Clements
The Essential Leadership And Management Skills Of Mid-Level Managers In Non-Profit Organizations, Vicki L. Clements
Theses and Dissertations
The role of the middle manager in organizations is evolving. As organizations shift from strictly hierarchical structures to ones that are increasingly horizontal and interconnected through team-based collaborations, middle managers are being asked to assume more leadership responsibilities in addition to their traditional management duties. While there is agreement that both leadership and management skills are required for organizations to be successful, there is limited information on the specific skills that are required to both manage and lead from the middle. Mid-level managers who successfully develop both skill sets are well positioned for future leadership positions. Preparing middle managers for …
