Citizen Journalism And Digital Voices: Instituting A Collaborative Process Between Global Youth, Technology And Media For Positive Social Change, Robin Worley

Theses and Dissertations

Millions of youths in developing countries are described by UNICEF as "invisible and excluded." They live at the margins of society, facing challenges to their daily existence, powerless to make positive changes. But the emergence of citizen journalism and digital storytelling may offer these youths a chance to share their voices and positively impact their lives. The Internet and mobile devices have allowed ordinary citizens to become citizen journalists by sharing news when and where it happens with a global audience. Digital storytelling is also growing as a means of sharing one's personal story with a larger audience than ever …

Assessing The Impacts Of A Leadership Development Program On Skill Development And Organizational Performance, Gina Paone Jan 2011

Assessing The Impacts Of A Leadership Development Program On Skill Development And Organizational Performance, Gina Paone

Theses and Dissertations

The quality of an organization's leaders substantially influences organizational effectiveness (Bass, 1990. One way organizations seek to enhance the quality of their leaders is to conduct leadership development training. However, training and development does not automatically produce results (Cook, 2006). Too many organizations conduct training based on the implicit belief that it is beneficial, rather than upon quantifiable evidence. It is important to evaluate what tangible benefits actually can be associated with the training. This study assessed the impact of a leadership development program on one multinational organization, particularly as it concerned skill development and organizational outcomes. This study used …

A Case Study Of User Adoption Of Enterprise Technology At Xyz Media Company, Holli A. Hudson

Theses and Dissertations

As globalization rises, so does the need for organizations to connect disparate processes and integrate information technology systems together. These activities are needed to unite all areas of a business and speak the same organizational language across geographic locations. As a result, the need for enterprise technology is on the rise. However, enterprise technology implementations are usually massive, complex, and expensive (up to $500 million for large multinational companies). Further, only 10% to 33% of these projects succeed. While 35% are cancelled, the remaining exceed their budgets by 178% and schedules by 230%, on average (Martin & Huq, 2007). Just …

Simple Rules Leaders Use To Guide Their Organizations During Times Of Rapid Change, Kristine Quade Jan 2011

Simple Rules Leaders Use To Guide Their Organizations During Times Of Rapid Change, Kristine Quade

Theses and Dissertations

Few leaders would refer to their organization as a complex adaptive system (CAS)--one that is irreversible and unpredictable. They might say their organization contains diverse elements and is constantly learning--the other two aspects of a CAS. Few top leaders rarely are able to identify the self-organizing patterns as they emerge. This study involved 58 senior leaders in five 5 market sectors who were guiding their organizations during times of rapid change. Using a Delphi method, the intent was to identify what simple rules the leaders used to shape the speed, direction and outcomes of self-organizing patterns. A simple rule expands …

Leading A Successful Change Effort At The School Level, Sindy Samantha Shell

Theses and Dissertations

Schools that have implemented professional learning communities (PLCs) have been experiencing the initial intention of professional learning communities, however, the essence of shared leadership, using collaboration as a problem solving component, and data-driven decision making is not in fact what is taking place in schools. The term "PLC" has become an overused and often detrimental label. This observed outcome could be attributed to how the professional learning community is implemented in the school. In order to have the change be effective, the new endeavor must be anchored in the culture. In fact, it has been observed that missing component in …

Comparing The Emotional Intelligence, Personal Traits, And Work Impacts Of Performing Versus High-Performing Middle Managers, Teresa Lara

The study of emotional intelligence (EI) has grown in popularity over recent decades. Some authors have argued that EI results in heightened personal and professional success. Middle managers, in particular, are believed to require EI, as they are tasked with linking and coordinating the strategic and operational levels of the organization. Enabling American students to race to the top through the education reform launched by the Obama Administration begins with attention to its youngest citizens. Studies have shown that high-quality early childhood education is associated with improved school achievement in later years. However, limitations in the reach and effectiveness of federal and state preschool programs have prompted the creation of nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving access to preschool for underserved children. One such organization is Los Angeles Universal Preschool (LAUP), whose design includes coaching for childcare providers to heighten the quality of their preschool programs. Three research questions were addressed in this study: 1. Are succession management programs subject to decrease or downsizing during times of economic crisis? 2. What can organizations do to keep short-term crises from derailing long-term succession-management efforts? 3. Are well established succession management …

Exploring Generative Change, Terry Vanquickenborne Jan 2010

Exploring Generative Change, Terry Vanquickenborne

Theses and Dissertations

Examination of human civilization reveals that cultures have continually evolved through social and economic forms (Drucker, 2000). Several authors have argued that society is again reaching a turning point where the current mindsets and approaches no longer meet the challenges being faced (Senge, 1990; Veltrop, 2006; Wheatley, 1999). Senge's perspective is that what is required now is a shift from mechanistic viewpoints to wholistic systems approaches. The new paradigm is reflected in the notion of generative change, which refers to change that builds upon itself; calls forth imagination, creativity, and courage; and originates in the interdependence and interconnectedness of people. …

An Evaluation Of Congruency Of Nursing Staff Values And Organizational Vincentian Values, Beverly S. Quaye

Theses and Dissertations

This case study was an exploration of values-congruence between personal and organizational values in a healthcare setting. Previous research has found that alignment between the two improves organizational effectiveness. The setting was a 384-bed urban Catholic hospital with Vincentian values. The efficacy of Vincentian values is found only in the academic and religious literature, not in that of healthcare. Published studies on registered nurses' values focus primarily on ethical reasoning and decision making. Employee values were defined using Rokeach's conceptual model for instrumental and terminal values. Both are based on enduring beliefs with specific modes of conduct or end-states of …
