A Case Study Of The Relationship Between Role-Taking Skills And Intellectual Development, Linda Suzanne Green Jan 1972

A Case Study Of The Relationship Between Role-Taking Skills And Intellectual Development, Linda Suzanne Green

All Master's Theses

A series of thirteen role-taking and cognitive development tasks, taken from research done on Piaget's developmental theories, were presented to ascertain the relationship between refined role-taking skills and the level of intellectual development demonstrated by a child in Piaget's pre-operational phase (two to seven years).

The results indicated that a child in this age range is not able to remove himself from his egocentric position and utilize the concepts of decentering and reversibility in constructing a meaningful message. This would indicate a lack of role-taking skill refinement.

It was concluded that the use of this type of task series would …

Post-Exposural Eye Movements And Lateral Differences In Tachistoscopic Recognition, R. Cameron Mcrae Jan 1972

Post-Exposural Eye Movements And Lateral Differences In Tachistoscopic Recognition, R. Cameron Mcrae

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Left-right differences in visual field accuracy obtained in studies of tachistoscopic recognition have been typically discussed in terms of a covert post exposure scanning process derived from the horizontal eye movements (EM) habitually used in reading. Further, some evidence exists that indicates the occurrence of EM concomitant with the recognition process. By monitoring EM during a representative recognition task, the present study attempted to establish the relation between overt EM elicited by the task, and response accuracy. Using a projection tachistoscope (duration 100 msec.), 8 female Ss were presented with a random trial series of 8-element letter, number, and symbol …

The Selection Of Bank Management Trainees: A Validation Study, James G. Overton Jun 1971

The Selection Of Bank Management Trainees: A Validation Study, James G. Overton

Master's Theses

Twelve studies of psychometric prediction using cognitive ability tests with upper level managerial samples are summarized. Of these, only two yield essentially positive results. Meyer (1956) found·a correlation of .27 between Wonderlic scores and overall ratings of 142 supervisors. However, since the raters were free to examine predictor-scores while making their ratings, there is strong evidence that the criterion was contaminated. In an unpublished study, Laurent (1962) correlated ratings of managers with Miller Analogies Test and non-verbal abiliti test scores. With over 200 persons in each sample, he found correlations ranging from .18 to .29, all significant. The majority of …

The Effects Upon Short-Term Memory Of Acoustic Interference And The Cognitive Separation Of A Reduntant Element, Robert A. Smallwood Jun 1970

The Effects Upon Short-Term Memory Of Acoustic Interference And The Cognitive Separation Of A Reduntant Element, Robert A. Smallwood

Master's Theses

Sperling (1963) noted that some subjects (Ss) stated they could "hear" material being held in short-term storage, and he suggested that short_term memory (STM) for verbal materials may be in the form of an auditory loop. The first major laboratory investigations of this topic were made by Conrad (1962;1964) who examined the errors made in immediate recall, and found that substitution errors tend to involve units that sound alike (acoustically-similar), even when the original stimuli were visual. He concluded that visual letters are recorded into auditory representations, which may subsequently be confused with one author. The auditory, or at least …

Effects Of Four Different Modality Training Programs On Iq And Reading Readiness Performance In The Lower Socio-Economic Level Kindergarten Child, Marilyn Segal Jan 1970

Effects Of Four Different Modality Training Programs On Iq And Reading Readiness Performance In The Lower Socio-Economic Level Kindergarten Child, Marilyn Segal

Theses and Dissertations

Four perceptual training programs were incorporated into an individualized kindergarten curriculum for disadvantaged children. One program stressed general auditory and visual perceptual skills, a second auditory skills specific to decoding, a third visual skills specific to decoding, and a fourth auditory and visual skills specific to decoding. Each of the four treatment groups were taught by the same teachers. Post-tests included IQ, auditory and visual measures of reading readiness, and two learning rate tests, the Murphy-Durrell learning rate test which uses a look-say instructional method, and a parallel learning rate test constructed by the investigator using a linguistic instructional approach. …

Reading Instruction And Phonetic Control In Materials Development Based Upon Relative Frequency Of Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondences, Richard T. Grow May 1969

Reading Instruction And Phonetic Control In Materials Development Based Upon Relative Frequency Of Phoneme-Grapheme Correspondences, Richard T. Grow

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation suggests a new approach to reading instruction and phonetic control in materials development. The central feature of this approach is its reliance on phoneme-grapheme correspondence data.

Specifically, the products of this dissertation were (1) the development of relative frequency tables depicting the various phonemes produced by a given grapheme structure, (2) the development of five different levels of phonetic sophistication, (3) the classification of 974 words as regular or irregular in accordance with each level of sophistication, and (4) the phonetic rewriting of three existing short stories to make them phonetically regular.

One of the phonetically rewritten stories …

A Comparison Of Mednick's Remote Associates Test And Pettigrew's Category-Width Test, John W. Sesney May 1968

A Comparison Of Mednick's Remote Associates Test And Pettigrew's Category-Width Test, John W. Sesney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present study was designed to examine the relationship between Mednick's Remote Associates Test and Pettigrew's Category-Width Test. The sample was made up of 36 educational psychology students enrolled in the Utah State Summer School.

The correlation for males and females was made independently. Although the males showed a higher correlation between the two tests than did the females (males, .296 and females, .058), the correlations were not statistically significant.

No full explanation was given for the lack of correlation between the category-width scores and the RAT scores except for the qualification that the RAT may be measuring a different …

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill Jan 1968

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.

With this purpose in mind -- to inquire intensively …

The Relationship Of The Detection Of Unpredictable Visual Binary Sequences And Selected Personality Measures, Currell L. Pattie Jun 1966

The Relationship Of The Detection Of Unpredictable Visual Binary Sequences And Selected Personality Measures, Currell L. Pattie

Master's Theses

To a certain extent the everyday incidents of life occur in a chaotic and orderless fashion. But in such an unpredictable world people must predict such events even if they present themselves at random. This suggestion by Restle (1961) is especially relevant to an experiment by Pattie (1964a) in the area of human binary prediction. This study seemed to indicate that individuals search for and believe in orderly, predictable solutions in apparently orderless, random situations. Ss were given a randomized deck of 200 index cards, of which 75% displayed an easily discriminable symbol with the remaining 25% bearing another symbol. …
