Investigating The Effects Of Negative Influence Gradients And Emotion Contagion On The Information Processing Capacity Of Social Media Users: Information Diffusion Modeling Approach, Nisha Baral

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

With the growing use of Online social media (OSM), users are observing a substantial amount of information in their social feeds. Moreover, people often use multiple OSM platforms because of each platform's unique features. Because of the huge volume of information present in social feeds, it restricts a user's ability to process the relevant information since the most important information may be overwhelmed by unimportant information. For information to diffuse in OSM, the receiver's attention is the most important condition. Cognition plays an important role in determining a user's attention/responsiveness. If OSM users receive the information above their cognition limits …

The Indian Railway system is one of the largest socio-technical systems in the world. It has existed for over 160 years, starting from the British Colonial times. It continues to play a critical role in present-day India. It’s continued functioning is dependent not only on the personnel who are employed in the railways, but also the technologies that go into the system. A critical technology in the functioning of the railway system is information and communications technologies (ICTs). ICTs are deployed in almost every facet of the railway system. But these ICTs did not manifest themselves recently. They have been …

Impacts Of The Thai Canal On Liner Shipping Container Network, Krittitee Yanpisitkul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis proposes a mathematical model that imitates the flow of containers in the container liner shipping network — particularly, in the Indo-Pacific region, where the Strait of Malacca is located — in order to assess the potential impact of the proposed Thai Canal on such a network. This model is constructed based on a combination of two network problems, namely (i) the Multi-commodity Minimum Cost Network Flow Problem (MCNFP) and (ii) the Liner Shipping Fleet Deployment Problem (LSFDP), which allows a more realistic representation of international trade, while taking to account congestion at container ports at the same time. …

Evaluating Mixed Reality Training For Calibrating Operators’ Mental Models Of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Ganesh Pai Mangalore 2022 Florida Institute of Technology

Evaluating Mixed Reality Training For Calibrating Operators’ Mental Models Of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Ganesh Pai Mangalore

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) offer safety benefits by handling active driving tasks. However, due to limited operational design domain, these systems may require driver intervention, making drivers’ mental models about system limitations and capabilities an important factor when operating them. Literature suggests most drivers are uninformed or unaware of their systems (McDonald et al, 2018), lacking complete or accurate mental models. Mental models (MM) are described as reflections of operators’ knowledge of system’s purpose and various functioning states (Seppelt & Victor, 2020). Incomplete MM of systems’ limitations may also adversely affect drivers’ hazard avoidance behavior.

Development Of A Multivariate Poisson Hidden Markov Model For Application In Educational Data Mining, Shahab Boumi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Managers and policymakers in higher education institutions try to improve graduation rates and decrease halt rates. To achieve this goal, it is important to understand academic and demographic factors that correlate with academic performance. Many studies in the field of education analytics have identified student grade point averages (GPA) as an important indicator and predictor of final academic outcomes (graduating or halting their studies). While semester-to-semester fluctuations in GPA are considered normal, significant changes in academic performance may warrant more thorough investigation and consideration, particularly with regard to final academic outcomes. However, it is challenging to represent complex academic trajectories …
