Chips with high computational power are the crux of today’s pervasive complex digital systems. Microprocessor circuits are evolving towards many core designs with the integration of hundreds of processing cores, memory elements and other devices on a single chip to sustain high performance computing while maintaining low design costs. Two decisive paradigm shifts in the semiconductor industry have made this evolution possible: (a) architectural and (b) organizational.
At the heart of the architectural innovation is a scalable high speed data communication structure, the network-on-chip (NoC). NoC is an interconnect network for the glueless integration of on-chip components in the …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Every year transistors are becoming smaller and smaller. The continued trend of transistors becoming smaller has led to double amount of transistors being placed in the same area of space from its previous generation. This has led to an exponential increase in the amount of power per unit volume on-chip, which has resulted in increasing temperature. In turn, the increase in temperature directly leads to the increase in the rate of wear of a processor. Negative-bias temperature instability (NBTI) is one of the most dominant integrated circuit (IC) failure mechanisms [5, 13] that strongly depends on temperature. NBTI manifests in …

Computer vision attempts to provide camera-equipped machines with visual perception, i.e., the capability to comprehend their surroundings through the analysis and understanding of images. The ability to perceive depth is a vital component of visual perception that enables machines to interpret the three-dimensional structure of their surroundings and allows them to navigate through the environment. In computer vision, depth perception is achieved via stereo matching, a process that identifies correspondences between pixels in images acquired using a pair of horizontally offset cameras. It is possible to calculate depths from correspondences or, more specifically, the positional offsets (disparities) between pixels in …

Model-Based Condition Monitoring And Power Management For Rechargeable Electrochemical Batteries, Taesic Kim
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Rechargeable multicell batteries have been used in various electrical and electronic systems, e.g., renewable energy systems, electric-drive vehicles, commercial electronics, etc. However, there are still concerns about the reliability and performance degradation of rechargeable batteries caused by low thermal stability and the aging process. A properly designed battery management system (BMS) is required for condition monitoring and control of multicell batteries to ensure their safety, reliability, and optimal performance. The goal of this dissertation research was to develop a novel BMS for rechargeable multicell batteries.
First, this research developed high-fidelity battery models for online condition monitoring and power management of …

Authentication Protocols Based On Advanced Encryption Standard (Aes), Michael Smith, Brandon Barker, Liljana Babinkostova
College of Arts and Sciences Presentations
For the last three decades, hash functions have been an essential element of the cryptography used for securing computers and electronic communications. The SmartDongle is a flash drive produced by MicroWorks and is meant to secure data and assure authorized use of software. In this project, we investigate the security of certain cryptographic techniques used in the current implementation of the SmartDongle’s authentication protocol. In particular, we analyze how the use of Merkle-Damgard hash functions based on a simplified version of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) can affect the SmartDongle's security. Our study involves extensive computational experimentation and analysis that …

Cloud computing platforms can be highly attractive to conduct course assignments and empower students with valuable and indispensable hands-on experience. In particular, the cloud can offer teaching staff and students (whether local or remote) on-demand, elastic, dedicated, isolated, (virtually) unlimited, and easily configurable virtual machines. As such, employing cloud-based laboratories can have clear advantages over using classical ones, which impose major hindrances against fulfilling pedagogical objectives and do not scale well when the number of students and distant university campuses grows up. We show how the cloud paradigm can be leveraged to teach a cybersecurity course. Specifically, we share our …

Computer Science Faculty Publications
This article presents an approach for decision-making in support of the control of an autonomous system of multiple tiers of robots (e.g., satellite, aerial and ground) based on the Blackboard architectural style. Under the proposed approach, the system evaluates prospective approaches for goal satisfaction (identified by user selected final rules), identifies the lowest-cost solution and determines the best path to achieving the goal, via the analysis of the Blackboard rule and action set. Two different approaches to this rule and action path generation are discussed. This article presents the proposed Blackboard-style architecture for autonomous multi-tier control and describes its implementation. …

Disclosed is monolayer and/or few-layer graphene on metal or metal-coated substrates. Embodiments include graphene mirrors. In an example, a mirror includes a substrate that has a surface exhibiting a curvature operable to focus an incident beam onto a focal plane. A graphene layer conformally adheres to the substrate, and is operable to protect the substrate surface from degradation due to the incident beam and ambient environment.

Dissertations and Theses
As the demand for microprocessors is increasing with more and more consumers using integrated circuits in their daily life, the demand on the industry is increasing to ramp up production.
In order to speed up the manufacturing processes, new and novel approaches are trying to change certain aspects of it. Microwaves have been tried as an alternative to conventional ovens in the curing of the polymers used as underfills and encapsulants in integrated circuits packages. Microwaves however being electromagnetic waves have non uniform energy distribution in different settings, causing burning or incomplete cure of polymers.
In this study, we compare …

Cumulonimbus Computing Concerns: Information Security In Public, Private, And Hybrid Cloud Computing, Daniel Adams
Senior Honors Theses
Companies of all sizes operating in all markets are moving toward cloud computing for greater flexibility, efficiency, and cost savings. The decision of how to adopt the cloud is a question of major security concern due to the fact that control is relinquished over certain portions of the IT ecosystem. This thesis presents the position that the main security decision in moving to cloud computing is choosing which type of cloud to employ for each portion of the network – the hybrid cloud approach. Vulnerabilities that exist on a public cloud will be explored, and recommendations on decision factors will …

The purpose of this directed project and related research was to demonstrate and catalog a new attack vector that utilizes cloud managed infrastructure. Cloud computing is a recent trend that is creating significant hype in the IT sector. Being that cloud computing is a new theme in the computing world, there are many security concerns that remain unknown and unexplored. The product of this directed project provides a documented taxonomy of the new attack vector and how to mitigate risk from this kind of attack.
The new attack vector creates efficiencies throughout the lifecycle of an attack and greatly reduces …

How To Estimate Expected Shortfall When Probabilities Are Known With Interval Or Fuzzy Uncertainty, Christian Servin, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To gauge the risk corresponding to a possible disaster, it is important to know both the probability of this disaster and the expected damage caused by such potential disaster ("expected shortfall"). Both these measures of risk are easy to estimate in the ideal case, when we know the exact probabilities of different disaster strengths. In practice, however, we usually only have a partial information about these probabilities: we may have an interval (or, more generally, fuzzy) uncertainty about these probabilities. In this paper, we show how to efficiently estimate the expected shortfall under such interval and/or fuzzy uncertainty.
