Petrochemical activities result in the generation of effluent that contain highly toxic heavy metals and oil products, which are very hazardous to the environment. The research tries to examine the adsorption capacity of three materials synthetic clinoptilolite, synthetic Purolite, and synthesized mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) in the removal of Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, benzene, and toluene present in real refinery effluent obtained at Al-Dora Refinery in Iraq (Baghdad). The experiments were carried by batch adsorption that investigated the equilibrium behavior, kinetic performance, and the influence of ionic strength and organic co-contaminants. The heavy metal adsorption was …

Historic urban spaces play a central role in shaping social interaction, environmental comfort, and collective identity in cities with deep cultural heritage. Despite this importance, empirical assessments of their performance in terms of Quality of Life (QoL) from the perspective of contemporary users remain limited, particularly in the context of Baghdad. This study examines Quality of Life indicators within a historic urban space through a case study of Al-Mustansiriya Madrasa, one of Baghdad's most prominent historic educational complexes. A descriptive–analytical approach was adopted, integrating a structured questionnaire survey, systematic on-site observation, and spatial analysis based on Space Syntax techniques. The …

Towards Fast Detection Of Suspicious Bluetooth Trackers Using Anomaly Detection, Orobosa Ekhator, Dylan Conklin, Primal Pappachan, Roberto Yus 2026 Portland State University

Towards Fast Detection Of Suspicious Bluetooth Trackers Using Anomaly Detection, Orobosa Ekhator, Dylan Conklin, Primal Pappachan, Roberto Yus

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Detecting malicious Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) trackers remains challenging because existing approaches rely on fixed time and distance thresholds that are brittle across environments. These heuristics produce false positives in dense environments and require long observation windows before flagging a device. To address these limitations, we present BL(u)E CRAB, a cross-platform (iOS/Android) mobile system that represents nearby devices using three risk factors derived from BLE scan data. Our detection model adapts Clustering-Based Local Outlier Factor (CBLOF) to BLE tracker detection and adds a gap-thresholding mechanism to separate high-scoring outliers from the benign majority. Across micro-benchmarks and end-to-end case studies, CBLOF …

Bio-Inspired Visual Intelligence: Improving Efficiency And Robustness Through Foveal-Peripheral Sampling And Learned Saccades, Jiayang Liu 2026 Syracuse University

Bio-Inspired Visual Intelligence: Improving Efficiency And Robustness Through Foveal-Peripheral Sampling And Learned Saccades, Jiayang Liu

Dissertations - ALL

Deep neural networks have achieved state-of-the-art performance across a wide range of computer vision tasks, yet their deployment in real-world and safety-critical domains remains limited by two major challenges: vulnerability to adversarial perturbations and high computational cost. While adversarial training can improve robustness under certain threat models, it is computationally expensive and often generalizes poorly to black-box or transferable attacks. At the same time, conventional vision pipelines process uniformly sampled high-resolution images, introducing substantial data redundancy, latency, and energy overhead. In contrast, the human visual system achieves efficient and robust perception through space-variant foveal-peripheral sampling, attention-guided saccadic eye movements, and …

Adaptive Path Planning For Robotic Arms Integrating Rrt* And Apf, Zhirun Chen, Jie Yuan, Erkenbieke Jia, Ningning Zhang, Chao Liu, Yushan Ye

Journal of System Simulation

To address the issues of large search space, low efficiency, and slow convergence of the RRT* algorithm in 3D path planning of robotic manipulators, an adaptive path planning algorithm integrating RRT* and APF is proposed. In the sampling phase, a Sobol sequence-based obstacle avoidance strategy and an APF adaptive-threshold, goal-biased sampling method are used to improve the quality of sampling points. During the expansion phase, sampling, attractive, and repulsive vectors are integrated, and adaptive weights are designed based on environmental information to generate a resultant force direction, thus enhancing the expansion guidance. For step size control, the obstacle repulsive potential …

A Cross-Dataset Vision Transformer Study For Brain Tumor Mri Image Classification, Sharon Kawira Mungania

Masters Theses

Brain tumor MRI classification is an important medical-imaging task because MRI scans contain complex anatomical patterns that can be time consuming to interpret manually. This study evaluates whether a pre-trained Vision Transformer can classify brain tumor MRI images consistently across datasets with different class structures. Three publicly available Kaggle datasets were used: Nickparvar, Br35H, and Figshare. Nickparvar and Figshare were treated as multi-class classification tasks, while Br35H was treated as a binary tumor/no-tumor task. Images were converted to three-channel format, resized to 384 × 384 pixels, normalized using ImageNet statistics, and augmented during training. The selected model was ViT-Base Patch …

Energy Management Strategy For Hybrid Electric Buses Considering Vehicle Mass Variation, Jinjun Tang, Shuaijie Zhang 2026 School of Traffic & Transportation Engineering, Central South University, Changsha 410075, China

Energy Management Strategy For Hybrid Electric Buses Considering Vehicle Mass Variation, Jinjun Tang, Shuaijie Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

The vehicle mass variation during the operation of buses affects power demand of the vehicle, which can result in poor performance of energy management strategies. To this end, a hybrid electric bus energy management strategy based on proximal policy optimization-adaptive simulated annealing (PPOASA) is proposed. ASA is introduced into PPO to perturb policy parameters according to policy entropy before the policy update, and the perturbed policies are adaptively accepted or rejected by employing the Metropolis criterion, thus improving the exploration capability of the policy and convergence stability. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the charge depleting-charge sustaining (CD-CS) …
