The paper presents the analysis of foundations conditions under static and seismic loads for a wind farm located in the Eastern part of Romania. From lithological point of view, the location is characterized by a soft cohesive strata alternation over 40m deep. Some design considerations for obtaining the most economical foundation options are discussed. By taking into account the static and seismic conditions, the soil – structure interaction (S.S.I.) is also revealed together with conclusions on the aeolian towers’ foundations solutions.

CH2M HILL is providing engineering, procurement, and construction services for a power plant project in Utah. Before beginning construction on the power plant, geotechnical studies were performed to characterize the subsurface conditions for the anticipated settlement and to determine a ground improvement method to accelerate the construction period. Ground improvement with wick drains and surcharge fill placement was carried out to improve the soft soil conditions at the project site. Settlement monitoring instrumentations were installed before placing structural fill and surcharge fill. A former industrial landfill site was selected for the design and construction of a large industrial building. Due to the soil and groundwater conditions along with potential environmental impacts discussed in this paper, support of the building using shallow spread foundations or conventional deep foundations, such as driven or cast-in-place piles or drilled piers were not considered to be reasonable foundation support alternatives. Common liquefaction control measures consist of deep foundations, soil mixing, and stone columns. A breakwater embankment was constructed as part of a settling basin for the intake of a thermal power plant in the north of Egypt. The 440-m long breakwater surrounds the intake basin which has an area of about 18000 m2. Sea water is supplied to the intake basin through 50 concrete pipes embedded in the breakwater. Subsurface soil conditions in the area indicated that the embankment would be founded on soft silty clay underlain by a layer of silty sand. In this study has been used the SSM (segment by segment method), which is verified using existing numerical and analytical solutions, is more efficient than the equivalent numerical solutions for example finite eminent methods. As part of the $1.7 Billion I-15 CORE highway reconstruction project in Utah, several new or enlarged large embankments were constructed adjacent to existing buried utilities. Lightweight fill was selected as the technology to limit distress to the adjacent utilities. In order to estimate the impact from new construction to the utilities, settlement estimates for the lightweight embankment were performed using traditional settlement estimating techniques. Numerical models using FLAC3D were then performed to refined estimates. The modelling of leachate generation and transport is important for estimating the possible groundwater pollution below the sanitary landfills. The numerical solution of the mathematical models for the total solids (inorganic) and chemical oxygen demand (organic) transport is presented. The existing one dimensional leachate transport model which accounts for advection and diffusion is modified with the addition of desorption term and the simulation results are compared for different case studies from the literature. The results of large scale static and cyclic triaxial tests for the Siah Bishe rockfill are presented. The test specimens are made of a modeled gradation with Dmax of 5 cm, reduced from the real Dmax of 80 cm by scalping method. Static triaxial tests resulted in the rockfill shear strength parameters within the expected range. The cyclic triaxial strength tests showed that the dam body rockfill failure criterion is not affected by earthquake loading.
