Study On The Mechanism Of Coal Bursts Induced By Quasi-Resonance Of Roof-Support System, Kai-Xing Wang, Jia-Qi Xue, Yi-Shan Pan, Lin-Ming Dou, Yong-Hui Xiao

Rock and Soil Mechanics

The mechanism and prevention of coal burst is an important issue in the study of coal mine dynamic disasters. The disturbance of surrounding rocks can trigger the quasi-resonance phenomena of roadway roof support system in close proximity to its resonant state, ultimately inducing impact disasters. This is manifested in three strong quasi-resonant responses, including roof displacement, velocity and acceleration. Based on the support instability and plastic buckling criteria, three safety factors and the corresponding dangerous disturbance frequency ratio interval for the dynamic failure of support are proposed, and the support damping control strategy is given, aiming at the impact disasters …

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Basic friction coefficients are important parameters affecting the shear strength of structural surface in rock masses. The basic friction coefficient determined by conventional laboratory test methods is influenced by mineral composition, temperature, and other factors. To systematically reveal the basic frictional properties of structural surfaces, the macro and micro friction coefficients of sandstone were investigated separately, and their relationship was established. First, mineral components and mechanical parameters of the sandstone were determined by X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation tests. Second, the friction coefficient in the macro scale was examined by tilt test and direct shear test, and the direct shear test …

An Improved Shear Strength Model Of Unsaturated Soils Over A Wide Suction Range, Yu-Xin Zhao, Xu Li, Sen Lin, Xiao-Meng Wang

Rock and Soil Mechanics

Different types of unsaturated soils are widespread in nature. Due to the differences in grain size and mineral composition, the shear strength characteristics of the unsaturated soils are significantly different over a wide suction range. In order to establish a unified model for predicting the shear strength of different soil types over a wide suction range, a systematic investigation was carried out to examine the effect of soil type on the shear strength of unsaturated soils. An improved shear strength model is proposed based on the advantages of two traditional equations. The proposed model is verified by comparing the published …

Understanding the vertical penetration process of submarine pipelines is of fundamental significance for the reasonable assessment of the initial pipeline embedment during installation and safety and stability during service. Geotechnical centrifuge model tests, combined with discrete element method modelling were conducted to investigate penetration resistance evolution characteristics and mesoscopic mechanism of submarine pipeline in sand with different densities under the real stress level. The test results show that for the medium-dense sand, the pipe penetration resistance−embedment curve shows a hardening trend. On the other hand, for the dense sand, the pipe penetration resistance−embedment curve exhibits a periodic softening trend; moreover, …

Earthquake-induced liquefaction poses a significant threat to underground structures. Particularly, tunnel structures located at the interface of different liquefaction-resistant strata are more prone to severe seismic damages. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical study was carried out to investigate the seismic response of a shield tunnel passing through saturated sandy strata with different densities. Firstly, a boundary interface model that describes the liquefaction behavior of sand with different densities was used to simulate saturated sand, which was validated by shaking table experiments on a tunnel embedded in liquefiable soil. Secondly, a multi-degree- of-freedom link spring is applied to characterize the …

Performance Of Helical Piles Retrofitted With A Novel Collar Vane Under Lateral And Torsional Loads, Juan Sebastian Carvajal Munoz 2023 University of Maine

Performance Of Helical Piles Retrofitted With A Novel Collar Vane Under Lateral And Torsional Loads, Juan Sebastian Carvajal Munoz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Helical piles are lightweight deep foundations designed to support both compressive and uplift loads by mobilizing the shear strength of soil adjacent to helical plates that are welded to an extendable shaft. Helical piles are relatively inexpensive, can be installed quickly utilizing non-specialized equipment, and they are suitable for a wide range of soil conditions. However, helical piles are precluded from many applications due to their inability to support substantial lateral and torsional loads. To overcome this limitation, a novel easy-to-install Collar Vane is implemented to augment the lateral and torsional capacity of helical piles.

The Collar Vane consists of …
